※The update got delayed because of a server problem on pixiv FANBOX. Really sorry for the wait 💦

This time, I’d like to talk about how I personally use AI when making manga recently - specifically, for coming up with ideas (“neta dash”) and rough doodling/exploration of those ideas (“neta rakugaki”).

The AIs I’m mainly using right now are ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini. I’ve also tried open-source models like Llama 3 and Kimi-K2, too. I’ve experimented with image generation using these tools too, but… as I wrote the other day, as of December 2025, it’s still pretty tough to use the results directly in my own manga 😅. On top of that, each AI has its own community guidelines - lots of “no this, no that, and absolutely no naughty stuff!” rules. So when it comes to erotic manga, in the end, Grok is pretty much the only one I can actually use (lol). But even Grok has some surprising restrictions… And honestly, when it comes to creativity - unlike the coding or PowerPoint tasks everyone raves about - these guys’ performance is… grrr… 💦 To be frank, it still feels like “they’ve got a long way to go!”

First, let’s talk about idea generation. The classic approach is to just ask something vague like “Got any manga ideas?” But when you throw something that broad at them… the ideas you get back are usually pretty bland 💦. What’s really frustrating is that the AI itself seems to think “This is the greatest idea ever!” 😤😤😤 (laughs). So instead, I give it more specific conditions - like the theme, characters, setting, etc. - and it does spit out a bunch of suggestions. But… yeah, most of them are still no good at all😭😭😭!!!!!! On top of that, the plot outlines or ideas they come up with often have huge inconsistencies - like “Why on earth did it turn out that way???” - so you can’t really use them as-is 💦💦💦. (For the tech-minded: this seems to be an unavoidable trait of current large language models (LLMs), related to their struggle with building a coherent “World Model.” I really hope this gets solved someday…)

Next is rough idea doodling/exploration. This is the stage where I mess around with memo-level ideas, wondering if something could turn into a proper manga story. One thing I do here is set up characters and have the AI role-play them. (I should note that “idea generation” and “rough doodling” don’t always happen in a fixed order - I bounce back and forth between the two with the AI until a full story starts to take shape.)

The typical prompt is something like: “You are a stubborn, old-school master carpenter. From now on, please speak to me as this character.” However, if you give too many detailed settings - age, appearance, personality, backstory, etc. - the AI starts to freeze up and its responses get increasingly stiff and unnatural 😅😅😅. It tries so hard to stay in character that the dialogue ends up overly wordy and awkward. So I’ve found it works better to keep things a bit loose and give it a concrete image like “model this character after SOMETHING, SOMETHING” (the more widely known the reference, the easier it seems for the AI to handle). Also, when I try to steer things into erotic territory, sometimes the AI suddenly starts saying completely nonsensical things or spams “aaaaaaaah” endlessly. In those moments I just think, “Oh dear, this guy got so excited he came, huh… 💖💖💖” (lol). (Thankfully those glitches have become less frequent lately.)

Every time a new AI model comes out, the developers proclaim “The pinnacle of human wisdom!” or “Look how amazingly AI has evolved!” But from the perspective of someone in the erotic industry - who they probably don’t even care about - I can’t help feeling, "Oh, really you think so????" 😂😂😂.

In the end, I take all these scattered fragments, pick out the promising bits, and build the actual story myself. In other words, what I’m doing is basically the so-called “bouncing ideas off AI” or “wall-bouncing” that people talk about 💦.

That said, the two stories I contributed to the recent gay manga anthology "CHO-GO-KIN" - “Convenience Store” and “Combatant Remodeling [Failed]” - both started from this kind of wall-bouncing with AI (they haven’t been posted here yet). “Convenience Store” came from a theme prompt “salaryman.” When I asked the AI to list things associated with “salaryman,” for some reason it suggested “convenience store clerk,” and I found that leap from “salaryman” to “convenience store clerk” really amusing, so I built the story around it. As for “Combatant Remodeling [Failed],” it grew out of a role-play session where I was capturing villains and “remodeling” them for fun - then I thought, “Hey, I want to turn this into a manga!”

Oh wow, looks like this post ended up getting pretty long this time 💦

Since years you managed to do totally amazing comics without AI, you can be proud of it:)

Oh, that's just disappointing honestly. I really liked your art and supporting you, but I can't in good faith indirectly support AI use. Wishing you the best going forward Kaz, but I will be unsubscribing.
