So, I went on a trip to Mount Koya (Koyasan)! A few years ago, a friend asked me, "Hey, let's go there!" But the timing overlapped with when Mount Koya suffered terrible damage from a typhoon... 💦 Since then, the opportunity just hadn't come around for a long time.

After all that, this time it finally happened! It felt like, "At long last!" Of course, I visited Kongobuji Temple and Okunoin, but I also stayed at a temple lodging (shukubo). So I had some truly precious experiences, like eating Buddhist vegetarian cuisine (shojin ryori) and attending the morning Buddhist service. It turned out to be Kobo Daishi (Kukai)'s birthday—I had absolutely no idea until I arrived at the scene... (haha) That's entirely due to my lack of prep work 😅. I was also blessed with the chance to see young monks gathering and chanting Shomyo (Buddhist ritual chants) in preparation for the occasion.

What struck me the most was that Mount Koya was located much deeper in the mountains than I had imagined. In Heian period literature, you sometimes see episodes where "a noble person goes into hiding at Mount Koya." Having actually climbed up to Mount Koya this time, I could really understand it, thinking, "Ah, I see, so this is what it means to hide away here." You really can't understand these things until you actually go to the place.

Now, if you ask whether I'll use this trip as material for my work later... given my genre, that might be a bit difficult (haha).

P.S. At Mount Koya's Okunoin, there is the "Miroku Stone," and they say if you can lift it, your wish will come true. Well, I successfully lifted it! Hahaha 😊😊😊😊😊 (Though, to be honest, someone taught me a method that was totally like a cheat code (haha)).
