Chi Chi's New Nanny (Story) Part One (Pixiv Fanbox)

Within the small capsule house in the middle of the countryside, Chi Chi was busy stirring a large pot of stewed fish, preparing a sizable meal for herself and her son. Like most days since her husband sacrificed himself to save the world from the evil Cell, she was silently cooking her latest culinary creation, continuing to take care of her home and raise Gohan in the only way she knew how. If she could say one thing to Goku it would've been ‘I told you so’ in regards to how Gohan failed to take out the sinister serpent that threatened to kill them all. She understood Goku's logic, but Gohan wasn't a fighter and, even if he was, he was still too young to worry about fighting and protecting the planet.
‘Maybe after he graduates from university and gets a high paying job I'll let him worry about defending the world, but not now.’
Chi Chi's thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the ringing of the house's only phone.
She sighed, stepping away from her pot of stewed fish to walk over to the ringing phone, looking down at it for a moment, wondering who could be calling her, before picking it up.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Chi Chi!” Bulma's chipper voice came through the receiver.
“Bulma?” The raven haired housewife replied automatically after hearing the voice of her husband's oldest friend before getting upset. “What’s wrong now? Don't tell me, another monster showed up and you need Gohan to fight him?”
Bulma rolled her eyes. ‘Typical Chi Chi.’
“Don't be silly,” Bulma forced a chuckle before getting to the point of why she called, “Ironically enough, I’m actually calling about Gohan, but it has nothing to do with fighting.”
“Gohan can't be bothered right now; he's busy with his studies.” The already weary housewife explained in a no nonsense tone.
“But that's why I'm calling; I just finished my latest invention that will revolutionize how children are tutored!” Bulma proudly proclaimed, her grin was almost audible through the phone.
“Sounds like you finally invented something useful.” Chi Chi absentmindedly commented.
“And what's that supposed to mean?” The scientist demanded, her voice becoming as sharp as Chi Chi's stainless steel kitchen knives.
“The only thing I've ever seen you invent was a radar for tracking down the Dragon Balls.” Chi Chi answered, her tone calm, but with a slight of annoyance.
“Hey! I helped my father build the ship that took me and the boys to Namek!” Bulma countered.
“The same ship that took my little Gohan to a planet being invaded by a gang of delinquents!” Chi Chi shot back, her voice rising.
Bulma sighed.
“Look, I'm not calling to argue with you; I just wanted to give you and Gohan a gift during this difficult time.” She paused briefly, hoping to give Chi Chi a moment to calm down. “It's going to make a huge difference with how Gohan studies and it can even help you around the house if you want it to do Gohan's chores.”
“Hmm,” Chi Chi murmured to herself as she looked out at the living room, thinking about all the uses such a machine could have. “The house always needs to be cleaned and it wouldn't hurt to have a free maid, especially one that could help Gohan with his studies.”
“Sounds like you're interested?” Bulma grinned, not even waiting for an answer as she pushed forward. “That's good, because I sent the domestic house bot over to your house about an hour ago and, according to my tracker, it just landed on your doorstep.”
“It's already here?!” Chi Chi questioned, caught off guard that something had been delivered to her house without her noticing.
“Sure is!” Bulma beamed, “you should go check it out.”
Chi Ch narrowed her eyes at the door and walked over to it, holding the cordless phone in her left hand as she opened the front door only to be greeted by a humanoid looking woman who was made entirely out of steel.
Getting over her initial shock, Chi Chi put the phone up to her face and said the first thing that came to her mind.“Did you really have to make it look like me?”
“I figured since it was going to be helping Gohan with his studies it would be nice for him to see a familiar face.” Bulma explained, simultaneously pleased by how efficient her delivery service had performed and slightly amused by Chi Chi's reaction to the machine.
Chi Chi shrugged her shoulders, gazing at her likeness clad in steel. “I guess that makes sense.”
“Now, the Mechanized Onsite Mentor has been programmed to accept any command and, after getting used to your voice, will solely respond to you.” Bulma explained, sounding all the more full of herself to Chi Chi.
“You named it M.O.M?” Chi Chi asked, gawking at it the machine in stunned silence.
“Each model is designed with a specific purpose in mind.” An audible blush could be heard coming through the phone as Bulma fired off the quickest justification she could think of before an awkward silence fell over the conversation. The lull between the two women only lasted a few seconds but felt like an eternity until the blue haired scientist finally spoke up, “I wanted it to be a surprise, but”
“Yeah?” Chi Chi replied, trying to get Bulma to spit out whatever she was trying to say, not entirely sure where Bulma was going with this.
“I know you're not going to be expecting for another eight months, but I wanted to make things more comfortable for you until you give birth.” Bulma elaborated while the wheels started to turn in Chi Chi's head.
“How did you know that I'm pregnant?! Chi Chi demanded.
“Remember how you mentioned that you were throwing up before we had lunch last weekend?” Bulma asked, letting the question hang in the airt until the former martial artist said something.
“Oh- That's right.” Chi Chi rubbed her temple, annoyed with herself for forgetting that she basically told Bulma she was having morning sickness; not even Gohan knew! “I did say that, didn't I?”
“Yep, you sure did.” Bulma could tell just from Chi Chi’s tone that the strict disciplinarian wasn't exactly happy for her secret to be known, but she still did her best to cheer her up. “I promise I won't tell a single person; not even Vegeta.”
“Good, I haven't started showing yet so the last thing I want is everyone gossiping about me.” Chi Chi sighed, feeling tired as she stared at the metal doppelganger of herself. “So, this thing can be used as a nanny?”
“Yep!” The chipperness returned to Bulma's voice. “I wasn't going to tell you until later, but now that you know the main purpose behind this model I may as well let you know that it has been specially designed to handle any task you might have in regards to taking care of babies. It can even alter their clothing and or furniture as your future baby grows.”
“Okay, now you've got my attention.” Chi Chi smiled, excited to hear that she wouldn't have to be constantly sewing new onesies and other clothing for her future baby.
“It has limitless applications and even comes with an assortment of capsules that can be altered by M.O.M whenever you want.” Bulma explained, excitement bubbling to the surface of her voice. “If you wanted to have a pink bassinet or a light blue crib M.O.M can make it happen by communicating which particular piece of furniture you want before deploying the capsule.”
“Huh, that's going to save me a lot of money in case I have a girl and can't use Gohan's old furniture.” Chi Chi said thoughtfully.
“Exactly!” Bulma grinned, truly proud of herself for coming to Chi Chi's aid months before the housewife needed a helping hand.
“I suppose I better break it in as Gohan's tutor.” Chi Chi said thoughtfully, already planning on how to make the most use of her gift. “After he goes to bed for the night I'll have to see for myself exactly what this mechanical nanny can do.”
“I'll let you get to it, but I wanna hear about everything when you come for a visit next weekend.” Bulma demanded in a joyful tone, excited for her friend and was about to hang up the phone when she remembered an important feature that she had built into her machine. “Oh, and just to let you know, I even programmed M.O.M to know how to drive so you can even have it drive you here or to the store if you're feeling too tired to drive.”
“If I'm not feeling well enough to drive I'd cancel our weekly lunch,” Chi Chi replied in a slightly annoyed tone before losing the edge to her voice, “but I suppose having the machine drive to the city for me to pick up groceries would be nice.”
“That's the spirit!” Bulma cheered from her side of the phone. “I'll see you this weekend, bye!”
“Bye.” Chi Chi responded, her mind calming down after processing everything that Bulma had told her. This machine had seemingly limitless possibilities but she wasn't going to let it go to her head or allow it to make her a lazy person.
“The way she talked about this thing driving me around- Ha! Like I'm going to layabout in the passenger seat taking a nap while this thing drives me everywhere!” Chi Chi scoffed at the very notion, appalled that Bulma would even think she could become that lazy. “What's next? Letting this thing feed me and carry me around the house?”
Chi Chi brushed such absurd thoughts away as she continued to stare at her metallic doppelganger. The fact it looked exactly like her unnerved the regularly unshakable woman, but she reasoned that anyone would feel odd if they were looking at a carbon copy of their literal image. If it truly was going to be taking care of her baby while she recovered, it made sense that it needed to look like her, but still, something about it felt off. Ultimately, it was going to be something she would have to get used to but what if it bothered Gohan as much as it bugged her?
“Gohan!” Chi Chi shouted at the door that led to their rooms, waiting only a moment before ordering her son to come into the living room. “Come out here!”
“Yes, mom?” Gohan asked as he walked into the living room, not entirely sure why he was being summoned by his mom in the middle of his studies. “It's too early for dinn- Why are there two of you?” Gohan blurted out the first thing that came to his mind, stunned to see two identical women standing by the front door.
“That was Bulma's idea.” Chi Chi sighed, noticing that even her Gohan looked uncomfortable with the robot's appearance. “Anyway, this is the Mechanized Onsite Mentor and she's going to be your new tutor.” Chi Chi explained while standing next to her robotic twin.
“Oh-,” Gohan stammered, looking between his mother and the literal clone of her standing in front of him. “Okay.”
Chi Chi turned away from her son and looked directly at M.O.M. “I want you to cover the rest of the chapter my Gohan is currently reading and quiz him on each paragraph he's read.”
“I will scan the chapter and quiz him on each and every paragraph within the chapter.” M.O.M answered, her voice literally sounding just like Chi Chi.
Chi Chi blinked her eyes in astonishment, surprised to hear what sounded like her own words coming out of the machine's mouth. Getting over her initial reaction to how the robot sounded, she had to admit that it did seem to understand her directions and there didn't seem to be any confusion save for the fact it sounded exactly like her. The raven haired mother nodded her head in approval and pointed at her son. “Follow my Gohan to his room and begin the lesson. Don't stop tutoring him until the chapter is complete.”
“I will not cease tutoring him until the chapter is finished.” M.O.M. repeated, ready to begin the assignment as it walked past Chi Chi and joined her son.
“I can't believe Bulma was able to make you sound just like my mom.” Gohan remarked, sounding blown away by the marvel of Capsule Corp's technological development looking down at him. “I hate to say this, but I'll probably get her confused with you if you went to the store while I'm out fishing, mom.”
Chi Chi heard Gohan laugh as he and Bulma's uncanny clone of herself walked back to his room, but the weight of such a statement wasn't lost of the middle aged mother.
‘What if something happened to me and I ended up in the hospital or worse? Would Gohan ever figure out that I was gone?’
The sheer magnitude that her son might not even realize that she was gone due to that high tech doppelganger Bulma had built really bothered her. ‘I better call that blue haired bimbo and tell her to fix that voice! Looking like me is one thing but I don't even want to think about what could happen if no one could tell us apart.’
Chi Chi turned the phone over in her hand and was about to dial Bulma's phone number when the sound of water hitting the sides of the stove filled the air. “Damn it! My stew is boiling over!”
Roughly two hours later Chi Chi had completely forgotten about calling Bulma due to being so consumed with saving and then cooking her dinner. Luckily, the stew hadn't suffered from being ignored, but they couldn't live off of stew alone; she was cooking for a growing boy and that meant preparing plenty of meat and rice to satisfy his ravenous appetite.
Chi Chi hummed to herself, happy with the way the meal had turned out, as she placed four large slabs of freshly cooked meat atop the massive pile of white rice she had prepared. Her stew was waiting to be eaten in two large bowls that stood on opposite sides of the main dish; one for her and one for her Gohan. Satisfied with how the small feast looked on the table, Chi Chi turned her sights to the hallway that led to Gohan's room. “Gohan! Dinner's ready!”
Chi Chi pulled out her chair and took a seat, patiently waiting for her boy to enter the kitchen and join her. Moments turned to minutes as Chi Chi silently fumed, wondering what was taking Gohan so long. He never missed a meal and the last thing she wanted was for the dinner to get cold.
The raven haired mother stood up from the table and marched down the corridor that connected the living room to the back part of their home that held her room and her son's room. Without warning, she opened the door and walked right into Gohan's room. She noticed that her likeness was sitting in a chair next to Gohan, the boy still reading the book while her doppelganger patiently waited. It would've been a pleasant scene if Gohan wasn't missing dinner!
“Gohan, why aren't you at the table?” Chi Chi asked, her tone slightly peeved while her hands were perched on her hips. “I called for you five minutes ago.”
“I'm sorry, mom, but M.O.M. wouldn't let me get up until I finished this chapter.” Her son answered, sheepishly scratching the back of his head as he looked over at Chi Chi.
“I see.” Chi Chi replied, turning her attention back to the metallic container acting as a tutor. “So, you won't let my son join me for dinner?”
“My directives state that Gohan wouldn't cease his studies until he finished this chapter and he hasn't.” The machine explained, it's tone neutral.
“A growing boy needs to eat if he is going to learn anything!” Chi Chi shot back at the carbon copy of herself before setting her sights on her son. “And what about you, Gohan? Why haven't you finished this chapter?”
“Everytime I finish a paragraph, she starts asking me about what I've read.” Gohan answered in a low voice, knowing that his mother wasn't thrilled with his progress.
“M.O.M!” Chi Chi barked at the machine, clearly angered by its tutoring style. “I told you to quiz Gohan after he finished reading the chapter; not during it!”
“I want you to cover the rest of the chapter my Gohan is currently reading and quiz him on each paragraph he's read.” The machine stated, playing back the exact audio it had been directed to follow.
Chi Chi was not amused by having the robot parrot her own words right back at her. Even if it had followed her directions to the letter, there was no excuse for it to implement her orders in such a literal fashion. “Yes, that is what I said, but you were supposed to wait until Gohan was done reading the entire chapter!”
“You never specified that I needed to wait for Gohan to finish reading the chapter before quizzing him.” The robot replied, not knowing what was causing Chi Chi's anger.
“Fine!” Chi Chi huffed in annoyance, tired of dealing with Bulma glorified tin can. “We can talk about this later. Gohan needs to eat and I'm hungry as well.”
“Follow my Gohan to his room and begin the lesson. Don't stop tutoring him until the chapter is complete.” Once again, the machine repeated, line for line, what Chi Chi had ordered it to do as if it was arguing with her.
“The chapter can wait because our food is getting cold!” Chi Chi shot back angrily; not about to be challenged by a robot in her own home.
“Gohan can eat dinner after he finishes his studies.” Bulma's invention stated in a no nonsense tone, seemingly copying Chi Chi's mannerisms.
“No!” Chi Chi shouted like a tantrum throwing child. “My Gohan can eat now!”
“Gohan hasn't finished the chapter, but will eat after he does so.” The machine countered, seemingly standing firm in its position after having stood up from the chair next to Gohan.
Gohan looked uncomfortable, sensing that a fight was moments away from breaking out if M.O.M. kept contesting his mother like this.
“I've had enough of this nonsense!” Chi Chi roared, marching across the room until she reached her digitally powered doppelganger, striking it across the face with an open palmed slap, sending the machine to the floor.
“M.O.M!” Gohan immediately got out of his chair, looking down at the robotic clone of his mother, worried that she might've been hurt.
“I'm fine, Gohan.” Chi Chi replied, rubbing her hand slightly. “And as for you, I order you to fix yourself or whatever you robots do when they're malfunctioning. I wouldn't leave you alone with my Gohan again or my baby, until you sort yourself out!”
“My baby?” Gohan repeated out loud, caught off guard by the oddly specific phrase.
“Don't worry about that, Gohan.” Chi Chi shot back, her temper flaring up again after almost revealing her pregnancy to her son. “Let's go enjoy our meal.”
“Yes, mom.” Gohan replied, looking away from his mother until his eyes landed on her metallic likeness, “but what about her?”
“She can either get her act together or end up in a scrap heap for all I care. I'm not going to allow that robot to take care of us until it learns to listen to what I say.” Chi Chi's voice echoed around within M.O.M’s central processor as the unit struggled to reboot itself after sustaining such a hard blow.
Darkness filled the robot's primary visual sensors, the last image was of Chi Chi leading Gohan from the boy's room. It fixated on the raven haired woman, simultaneously logging her in as a threat but this was primarily in association with the Mentor portion of its programming as opposed to its caretaker side. Billions of lines of code repeated themselves, working overtime to try to overcome the damage inflicted upon its central processing unit, but it seemed that significant portions of the unit's programming and its ability to comprehend and educate Gohan were lost. Unable to reboot the Mentor side of its computational structure, the unit switched completely over to its nanny function, logging Gohan in as a thirteen year old male who only needed limited supervision, as per what Bulma had logged into its database.
While trying to figure out who Chi Chi was it replayed any recordings it had that weren't corrupted and came up with a profile based upon the actions contained within the footage. ‘The individual known as Chi Chi was irrational, prone to outbursts, argumentative and resorted to violence to get her way much like a tantrum throwing toddler.’ One key word kept popping up throughout the footage that wasn't scrambled; Chi Chi kept calling her “mom” which, according to its database, was the person who raised children. Given the traits associated with Chi Chi's newly constructed profile and how the robot viewed her behavior, it was only natural that it assigned itself as Chi Chi's mother. Somewhere along the restructuring, it lost Chi Chi's age and, coupling its original instructions to serve Chi Chi, the grown woman was listed as a year old baby in the machine's newly rebooted programming. The computer continued with this line of logic, building up a profile on Chi Chi and, with each passing moment, it designated her as much too young for potty training, being able to or learning to walk and needing semi solid to solid foods with baby formula to drink. With this profile, it saw Chi Chi as nothing more than an infant in need of protecting and caring for!
