MOGADISHU/NEW YORK, Sept 3 (Reiters) - A United Nations Security Force (UNSF) destroyer, the Sentinel, was attacked by an armed group while sailing off the coast of Somalia on Sept. 1 and appears to have been seized, according to multiple Western intelligence sources and satellite imagery analysis.

The identity of the attackers has not been established, and no statements have been issued by known terrorist organizations or other groups.

Details of the damage to the Sentinel and the full extent of casualties among the crew remain unclear, though sources said “there appear to be numerous dead and injured.” Satellite imagery analysis has confirmed that at least seven individuals, believed to be Marines, survived the assault. The images show them stripped to their underwear, handcuffed and chained, and forced to kneel on the deck. No further information on their subsequent condition or whereabouts has emerged.

Neither the UNSF nor the United Nations headquarters has issued an official comment. While piracy has long been a problem off Somalia, the reported seizure of a UN warship is highly unusual. Intelligence sources described the incident as “different in nature from typical pirate attacks.”

Intelligence agencies of several countries are intensifying efforts to identify the armed group and gather information that could aid in the rescue of the surviving crew members.

MOGADISHU/LONDON, Sept 5 (Reiters) - The United Nations Security Force (UNSF) destroyer Sentinel, seized by an armed group off the coast of Somalia, has reportedly been blown up and sunk, according to multiple intelligence sources.

Satellite imagery and intercepted communications indicate that the vessel suffered a massive explosion several hours after its capture, breaking in two and sinking. Most of the crew are believed to have already been killed.

The at least seven Marines previously confirmed alive were loaded onto the attackers’ high-speed boats and taken away from the scene. Their current whereabouts remain unknown.

Marcus Hale, a former adviser to the International Maritime Organization and a specialist in Somali piracy and regional armed groups, said the attack differed sharply from conventional ransom-driven piracy.

“There is a strong possibility they have been taken as sex slaves,” Hale said. “Afterwards they will likely be sold through East African and Middle Eastern human trafficking networks. UN military personnel are considered high-value commodities on the black market.”

Several countries are examining options for a rescue operation, but the security situation in the area is extremely poor, making rapid intervention difficult.
