i was one of the people who got the album on first listen! i could clearly hear the influences and references from not only their solo work (i hear a lot of right people wrong place, face, jack in the box, etc.) but some of their earlier albums too. my favorite song so far is fya but that can easily change🤞🏾 i understand the criticism surrounding the amount of english in the album too because we don’t want them to feel like they have to cater to certain audiences, but reading the lyrics to “aliens” really shifted my mindset on that! they touch on themes of racism they face in the industry, the pride they feel being korean and showing it their way even through english. they’re expressing that they’re doing this album on their terms, so who are some of us non-koreans to say these korean men didn’t make a korean album because the songs weren’t presented in what we perceive korean elements should be. not saying you did this, it’s just a criticism i’ve seen online and this is a comfortable place for me to express my thoughts on it!

Hi ! Happy to see you react to this ! I'm sorry it's probably going to be a very long comment x) So first, we're going to get some dance practices. Tae went live yesterday and pretty much said it directly if I understood well. And from what they said on their comeback livestream, we will probably get at least one more MV (if not more) that are probably more the style that people were expecting for the title track. So yeah we just have to wait a bit to see what more they planned. Now, about the album. First personally I really liked it. Some of the tracks are less for me, especially the studio versions, but the live performances are already way better. I think probably the same tracks as you, seeing your reactions and what tracks you said you liked 😂(So the songs that I probably won't listen much are Hooligan, 2.0 and FYA) Outside of that, I really like most of the songs, and love the live perf even more for the ones they did already. Like animals was amazing live. I really love Aliens, Swim, Normal , and Merry Go Round too. About the mixed reactions with this album, it's nothing new. It has been the case with every single comeback BTS had. I've been an ARMY for 9 years, and believe me the negativity I saw with every album they released, on social media, has always been huge. First BTS will always be a divise artist, because they keep doing new things with each "era". So people that became fans after a specific album with a type of sound they really liked may be disappointed when the new album is very different in sound, style, theme... Very versatile artists are not that common. Most singers/rappers/groups are often sticking to one specific genre, or a fusion of some but you can often find a common style of music, structure of the songs, style of productions, themes/lyrics from each releases. There can be some growth/evolution of the sound or some subtle changes but it's pretty rare for an artist to really have such a variety of sound in their discography. So it will always be a double edge sword. They can attract a lot of new listeners that will like their "new" sound, but they can also lose some their existing fanbase/casual listeners that don't enjoy this new sound. Also, I'm sorry it's getting really long but I really wanted to point out that especially with boy/girl bands (western and k-pop) it's so rare to see a group stay together and active for over a decade that a lot of people are just not used to see a "boyband" evolve and grow. Those groups often start really young, and most of the time they stop being active as a group way before reaching their thirties. So I see a lot of people that want BTS to keep releasing the same music they did 10 years ago and it's never going to happen. I mean people don't expect Beyonce to keep releasing the same music she did when she was in Destiny's Child or even at the start of her solo career. I will also say that I've definitely seen a lot of reviews from people that clearly had no good intentions from the start, and also from people that clearly didn't listen to the album so... x) Especially in the k-pop spaces... where BTS is not really liked in general. I'm not saying that every bad review is "fake" or from haters, I definitely believe that not everyone liked it, even ARMYs or completely unbiased people. But I just wanted to add some nuances to those "mixed reviews". Also Jimin never said that he rejected "most of the songs" in the album. I think he said that for 2 songs (maybe 3), in their comeback livestream. I still need to rewatch it, it was 6 a.m. when I watched it x) And also that at first he wasn't for Swim as the title track, but all the members had some songs they didn't want and others they really wanted in. That what's going to happen when there is 7 people in one group. Anyways, I loved this performance even if obviously it would have been better without RM's injury (I can't imagine his frustration). But their chemistry is definitely still there, they were clearly enjoying themselves (passed the first couple songs where they were tensed yeah x)). And I'm really glad they are back, can't wait for the tour and to see them live for the first time (finally after 9 years 😭) Thank you again, and I hope you have a great day ! :D

I mean I'm glad you watched this at all, but I think Netflix made changes to the audio quality and visuals on the official replay that cuts down some audience shots and shows a bit more of the guys in some sections. But hindsight is 20/20 they say, hope you enjoyed :)

I agree with so much of this! A subsection of the "mixed" reviews were proven bad faith actors who had no intention of engaging with the album with an open mind. Are there Army and other multi stans that don't vibe with every track, or needed another listen to "get" it per se? Of course, that's fine. But all of the people saying they "miss the old BTS" or "what happened to the group that made X song" I fear have never experienced artists actually growing up or evolving their own personal tastes which then shows in the music they make. I also have a hunch that many people who say they are Army did not check out the solo era because I personally felt so much of the first half of this album could have lived on a J-Hope or RM solo project (especially RPWP) and the second half on Jin/JK/V album. But maybe I'm the weird one, idk.

I agree that some of the songs on the album are not my favorites, but hearing them and seeing them performed, I started to enjoy them (particularly 2.0). But generally I like the album and cannot wait to see them in Baltimore!!!
