A major tag team is expected to join WWE eventually, but they haven't yet.

This week, reports emerged that the Lucha Bros, Penta and Rey Fenix had signed with WWE on multi-year deals. While it is expected that WWE is the ultimate destination, a number of WWE sources confirmed to Fightful Select that the two aren't signed yet. One even indicated that they believe Rey Fenix is technically still under contract with AEW and that the transition to WWE won't be as smooth as expected. AEW sources have not confirmed Fenix's contract status.

Both wrestlers remain on AEW's official roster page. When we've asked AEW and WWE in an official capacity on the status of either talent, we've not gained an answer.

Regarding word that merchandising was underway, Luchablog noted on Twitter -- the "WWE is quickly making Lucha Brothers merch while AEW didn't" talking point is a little apples/oranges. Those trademarks were out there months ago too, they're getting WWE owned gimmicks and their merch. They held onto some merch rights with AEW, a wholly different setup.'

Penta had told numerous people throughout this Summer that he was expecting to go to WWE and had been in contact with the company. He'd also told those he spoke with that he and Fenix were a package deal and preferred to go directly to the WWE main roster.

Well there you go. Penta deal I remember it being reported expired in August with Fenix expiring some time in September. Assuming TK doesn’t add injury time to Fenix which id like to think he wouldn’t be petty enough to do. I imagine we see them both turn up in WWE in October

Ryan Grenert

This why I wait for fightful to report anything now a days

Alex Sabo

This is why I wait for Fightful to confirm, you never know with wrestling. I hope to see them immediately on Smackdown!

Jamal Johnson

This is why we wait for fightful

Getting the best deal and guarantees.Still bruice p idiot on the creative team.Give em everything Trips prove yourselves and don't listen to others. It's your moment now.

Because it’s holding talent hostage who don’t want to be there. They where offered new deals they turned them down & there no real benefit to keeping Fenix around for another year outside of being spiteful to him & Penta

Matt Hennessy

I don’t think he will I think the Fenix AEW situation will be similar to WWE & Lashey situation. WWE could of added injury time to keep Bobby around but choose not to after he turned down a new contract. There are a lot of things you can both praise & criticise Tony Khan & Triple H for but both guys to there credit don’t seem to hold talent hostage if they want to leave

Taters Precious

I wouldn’t welcome them back if their signature on a contract is worthless if their whims change.

Given how much time Fenix has missed, I would imagine Tony could tie him up for some time. But by all accounts, The Brothers were always professional and even if you don't like AEW, Tony has a reputation for being a fair man. If memory serves, he had a option with Cody, but was a professional and did not tie him up. If the LBs had been jerks, maybe Tony would screw with them, but I don't see that happening. Best of luck to them. New landscape, new challenges. Not unlike Ricochet. Sometimes you don't make a change because you are angry, you just want to try something different.

Matt Hennessy

Lynchman this is the most sensible comment I’ve read couldn’t of put it better myself

As much as TK is within his rights to trigger the extra year on Fenix's contract, he'd have a very disgruntled wrestler on his books. Better just let him go and build up another team, like hopefully they're doing with the Outrunners.

Lynchman

By all accounts, the current WWE is a better place to work than under John and Vince, both of whom had reputations for not just being petty, but flat out mean. In the days of territories, plenty of wrestlers moved on when a booker simply had no creative plans for them. New territory, new chance to succeed. And a lot of times, talent might head back after a year or so.

Stalla

Should add the injury time, he paid him for it should be able to recoup the time.

Stalla

How is it petty to add injury time? He was paid for all that time he was off injured. Does he not need to help Tony recoup that last time and money?

Sean Jones

WWE will neuter the Lucha Bros. You think they will be allowed to do half the moves they currently do? And, knowing WWE, they will be riding to the ring on a lawnmower wearing serapes and sombreros

CSDX

Wait, are they not gonna wrestle as Pentagon Jr. and Rey Fenix? Lord I hope that doesn't end up hurting them in the long run.

Ant

This post alone is worth the $5, well done Fightful

Matt Hennessy

I don’t think they own the rights to those names I think CML owns them. I think they will probably get similar enough names. They both trademarked Rey Fuego & King Penta. They will likely have the same characters & presentation just with a different name

Ricky

You must think this is 2005 because I don't see Rey, Dragon, Dominik, Legado, etc riding to the ring on a lawnmower wearing serapes and sombreros so you might have just exposed yourself as a racist

Lynchman

Even if they do own the rights, WWE almost always (outside of really big, important names) wants to make changes so they can own the trademarks. I can't see the LB s giving up their likeness to WWE. IT will likely be, as Matt said, very minor changes. Hell. Lucha Wrestling brothers might be it. Rey Mysterio Jr became Rey Mysterio.

CSDX

Didn't guys like AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura work out a deal so they get to still use their namesake outside of WWE if they ever leave? What makes it so different for the Lucha Bros to not be able to do that?
