Thea Hail became NXT North American Champion, but was not meant to be.

On the December 16 episode of NXT, Thea Hail pinned Blake Monroe to become the NXT North American Champion. Confusion ensued, as Blake Monroe got a hand but not a shoulder up before the three. There was a heavy delay before Thea Hail's music ended up hitting.

Fightful Select confirmed with NXT sources that this was not intentional, and that Blake Monroe was set to retain her title. There was said to have been a scramble backstage when the botch happened, and immediately following it. We're told that it specifically caused issues because there was creative specifically in place with Thea Hail not being the champion. We're told that was immediately being changed to adjust. This ended up affecting multiple people's creative that was set for the next couple of weeks. We'll work to find out what else has changed.

It was communicated to Fightful Select that there would be steps taken as early as tonight to make those creative adjustments. We weren't told immediately who got the blame for the situation, as most involved were just working to quickly make changes to what needed to be changed.

Referee fucked on Blake.

The right decision was made. The ref counting to three regardless of whether it was supposed to happen or not just looks better. I’m sure it’ll all be corrected soon tho.

Honestly, the ref actually counting as a shoot is better than pretending Blake got her shoulder up. Still not great, but still. Curious about how they're gonna pivot now.

To be honest I liked it. Much more natural than the ref trying to cover it up. Plus it is the developmental brand, so a perfect place to go with the change and roll with it.

P1eces

Ref did what needed to be done but it'll be interesting to see what domino effect this has.

Malicious Rose

Such a weird turn of events but I love it! It added so much unpredictability

NXT booking blows, this is a blessing in disguise, less time to overthink things and screw stuff up... Thea also should have won a title like 2 years ago..

Abby

I think Blake got the wind knocked out of her and had a hard time kicking out. It seemed like also her arm got stuck

Andrew MacDonald

I'm glad they're going back to the referees counting shoot pins. The other way is awkward. More wrestlers need to be fucked on!

LJ

I smell a work.

Paranormal Sideshow

It’s totally a work regardless of what they’re telling you. Go back and watch Thea’s immediate “shocked” reaction (BEFORE) looking at the ref to see what actually occurred. Who does it benefit? Well, it draws eyes and made me go and watch something I’d never go watch lol. So I can’t be the only one to do that. It also gives Blake some more fuel for being screwed over. Maybe I’m wrong but wow that walks and talks like a duck. 🦆

Mariah mariah mariah. Im sure thats a lesson learned and what developmental is for after all. .

Shannon Willis

Shhhidd, they'll work it out. I'm actually a bit excited about the unpredictability of it. Let Thea have a lil run for a bit. Blake will be alright. I actually thought that combination of moves by Thea was dope.

When I saw the video of Blake interrupting Thea and Jordyn saying she kicked out and she didn't know what the referee was doing. The 1st thing I thought of "That referee tried to fuck on me". Kind of sucks Becky is already having a ref based story at the moment because I think Blake blaming the ref for "trying to fuck on her" maybe not those exact words would be a fun way to make the best out of the accident. As far as what happened still kind of hard to tell of Blake got the wind knocked out of her or in an awkward position when Thea was trying to roll her back into the pin. Kind of looked like Thea thought Blake was going to roll her up there.
