Backstage Reaction To Darby Allin Reign (Patreon)

Darby Allin’s reign is in the books, and won some people over.

Fightful Select originally reported plans of Darby’s reign before it happened in April. At the time, there were admittedly some skeptics within All Elite Wrestling that spoke to Fightful. In following up with some of those doubters after the reign, there were several that told us that they changed their mind on it, and applauded Darby Allin for going the extra mile to make the championship reign a special one. As one would expect, Darby got a lot of positive reaction for his in-ring work during the feud.

Sources that we spoke to believe that MJF had been supportive of the Darby Allin title reign dating back quite a while. There were unusual online reactions upon him being squashed for the title that he would be upset or leave AEW as a result of the booking.

It was good and then Tony went and ruined it by having Darby lose it back to MJF on his first PPV as champion. I’m getting real sick and tired of seeing MJF constantly hold the belt. Wasn’t his 400+ day long enough. We’ve only had like 2 or 3 different world champions in the last year or so when a few more years back we had lots of world champions.

He won me over with the reign. The burning out after all the matches was the perfect route for Darby. And MJF just gets it.

I enjoyed it. It was different with him defending it so often. And of course he looked like a vulnerable champion.

I don't think mjf is holding the belt until All In. Plus Darbys reign was beat suited for one month

Darby's reign was what id expect a Darby reign to be. Leave it all out there. Defend defend defend ... id have liked a longer reign ... maybe when MJF goes off filming ... then he returns for what is 'his'. But obviously they have big plans for All In. Darby left it all out there. I enjoyed it. He is Mr AEW. He deserved it imo. And MJF ... i dont see him leaving AEW. He doesnt need the ad show for any solidification of how good he is. AEW is on fire. Best thing out there in wrestling for last year and this year. Loving it. Truely, where the best wrestle.

Darby's open challenge twice a week made the belt look like a midcard title. Plus if one of your top guys fresh as a daisy can't beat one worn-out 7-11 parking lot tweaker then it makes the whole division look weak.

I would imagine him losing back to MJF, at the PPV, was planned when he beat MJF. I think there is little chance he was ever going beyond DON.

Crowds were engaged during Darbys run and it was the freshest thing I’ve seen since Hangman’s second run(which arguably has been way too short for someone the company was built upon and for since day one) MJF doesn’t need another bland and boring 400+ day run. Also Darby doesn’t need to be going after the TNT title again. I like MJF as a heel but he’s honestly better when not holding any title.

I’ll have to admit it proved me wrong as I wasn’t in favour before but as short title reigns go it has been brilliantly done really and topped off with a great main event at DON.

Was such an awesome compact title reign that we'll probably be talking about for a while, glad it went over as well as it did, darby damn near killed himself to make that happen.

I will never understand people thinking MJF was "squashed" in that match. Being hit in the balls and then repeatedly hit with your opponents finish is being incredibly protected in a loss. Also don't understand people saying Darby's reign was pointless. It gave us great matches and told a terrific story of Darby wanting to be a fighting champion to spite MJF and it costing him in the end. Terrific angle all around.

They let the character determine the reign, and it turned out several bangers. You can’t ask much more from something like this.
