Shawn Spears is set to be All Elite no longer.

We’re told that Spears becomes a free agent on January 1, and the departure was amicable between he and All Elite Wrestling.

Spears had been an integral figure in the early days of AEW, feuding with Cody Rhodes. However, since the Pinnacle fizzled out, Spears was left largely directionless and rarely appeared on AEW TV. Spears last wrestled on AEW All Out Zero Hour, and hasn’t wrestled on a Dynamite since May 2022.

Prior to AEW, Spears appeared on WWE TV for nearly six years as Tye Dillinger across the main roster and NXT. He and his wife Cassie Lee announced that they're expecting their second child.

Minutes after publishing our story, Spears confirmed our report, saying:

"What a wonderful time it has been.   Thank you AEW for allowing me to be there from the ground level. It’s been a fantastic 5 years of growth and personal development.   This is a personal choice and one that is best for me and my family at this time.   Thank you to all, staff and talent alike for the memories.

10."

I can't say I'm surprised. He's a talent that should've definitely been utilized a lot more I loved his dickhead heel character with MJF

Kyle Cotton

The man has unfortunately never gotten a fair shot in this business beyond his NXT tenure as Ty Dillinger.

Scott Newcomb

Too bad but AEW cant use everyone under contract. Way too bloated of a roster IMO

Brian Carpenter

This is shitty. I know they have limited spots to shine people up but Sean Spears should’ve gotten more time. Hopefully WWE pick him back up and utilize him

Tempo1337

They fumbled Spears going all the way back to not having him beat Cody after the chair shot. It would have cemented him as a dangerous heel.

Lawrence Robinson

He was mid. Let it go. He came in an era with a shit load of people better than him.

Jeffrey Brown

I had high hopes for him in WWE and AEW but he never really amounted to anything. Either he can go home and be a family man with Cassie or he can try TNA or the indies.

Modrevolve

It was strange to see him entangled in the Ricky vs. BCG feud and then just gone.. Best of luck!

ProdigalGeek

One of the greatest and humblest minds in the business. So envious of all the students at Flatbacks

I don't know if it makes any sense for him to go there compared to a better place like TNA where he would be used a lot more. WWE didn't do much with him before not much would change now.

Scott George

AEW wasted another talented wrestler

Ol’ Dustin

What is Shane Spearz doing in the IMPACT Zone?!?

Especially after they started that feud with Spears being pissed at Cody for calling him “a good hand.”

David C

A good talent to have for those early couple of years but realistically as the roster grew he, as with other 2019 starters, inevitably slipped down the card.

Yall complain the roster is too bloated and then complain when the roster is thinned out

YetiFaun -

Impact would be a great fit for him

e d

His stuff in the pinacle was fun to watch, im sure theres something out there for him.

Troy A Palek

One of the coolest entrances in AEW history. Hope he finds a place that uses him correctly

Ant

Hope he lands on his feet

Rincewind

He's one of the good ones. I hated how things worked against him and so many other originals in AEW, but whatever happens, I hope he doesn't hang the boots up anytime soon.

Keith

I don’t know what he wants to do next, but I want him to eventually land a coaching role in NXT. He was a product of it for so long and has training experience with flat backs.
