First of all, I am glad that you reacted to this beautiful show, it's one of the shows I only could watch when my mind was in the mood for something more serious but loved it nonetheless. I'm late (again, but I found your channel only 2 weeks ago), and I still have to catch up your reactions properly, so perhaps what I would love to say is already old news to you. The mangaka of the manga the anime is based on is the same mangaka like the manga and anime "Sweet Blue Flowers" (SBF), you could even call the Scenes from Awajima kind of a spin-off of SBF. So, Sweet Blue Flowers has a similar if not the same art style like Awajima, there are several refences to SBF in the latter, many of them in this first episode. The biggest ones are Ryouko Ueda and the Fujigaya Girl's Academy. Ryouke also appears as side character in SBF and the Girl's Academy is one of the two main locations. Since I read and watched SBF several times, I spotted even more references in later episodes (even the main characters of SBF come into the picture in one episode). Sadly, the manga only got adapted into an anime halfway through, it's still worth a try. It's in no way episodical like Awajima and has different vibes, but if you like the art style here, you will love it there, too, if you ever will find space in your tight schedule.
