To be honest, I love the idea of pushing the boundaries of how good and bad a main character can look. I've rarely seen a character capable of being as understandable and as hateable as Subaru. On an "artistic" pov, I can only admire Tappei for writing such a protagonist. And, contrary to (apparently) many people, I still ALWAYS empathize for Subaru. In his circumstances (including mind "scrambling" like I think is happening in this case), I feel like he has always behaved as expected of a normal flawed human being. For whoever criticize him, I would like to see them in his position. Regarding me, I HOPE I would avoid his worst moments, but I'm not so confident I would. If you're sure you would, you're either a saint, or overconfident, or you've never experienced hardship. I'm of the philosophy that every person has the potential of doing incredible good and incredible evil depending on its development and environment so I'm really feeling this kind of character writing. I loooove conflicting and non-monodimensional characters.
