We have seen how Rudeus so far is heavily dependant on others for his mental functionality, Eris leaving left him disfunctional, Sara fiasco was a near miss thanks to that bro, Sylphy/Fitz rekindled him only for Paul fiasco to leave him in a disfunctional state all over again with Roxy becoming his 2nd pillar to raise him out of his spiral. So we've seen him falling apart multiple times so far when he loses someone close, it's simply a pattern that keeps repeating. And Hitogami knew from observing him and kept pressing on that button to make him fall apart harder.

Good point on how traumatic this would have been as the real timeline spread over 1-2 seasons of pain. The six-sided world was mentioned once before in the anime without explanation; I can't remember where. Yeah, the Sylphie doll was a nice touch.
