I just realized since I don't know how far ahead you record or what source you are using for these episodes I figured I should mention that some sources of episodes will be missing the original episode 15, Cucuruz Doan's Island. If you're using files from any version not from Japan that episode will be missing since it's been removed from all international distributions. It's a very standalone episode so skipping it is technically fine if you already recorded past it. The exact reason for it's removal has never been said though it does have a noticeable amount more animation issues.

I actually think Gihren’s speech is one of the best portrayals of propaganda speeches in fiction, to be honest. So definitely propaganda.

Animation outsourced due to a staff illness; the producer felt embarassed they so pulled it from video release after broadcast. But that's not the end of the story! It got remade in 2022 in a retro-style to match the look of the old series by the original director with returning cast (Amuro's VA, etc.) as an OAV/movie "Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island." It's available through all usual channels (crunchy roll, etc). As you probably cannot watch the original broadcast order (as it was pulled) this raises the question: Watch the extended remake now (and thus not miss part of the original story as broadcast) or stick to foreign video release order, and first watch 40 years of Gundam continuity before learning what happened to Amuro and White Base in days between ep 15 and ep 16 (15 with renumbering). Both are valid!

I'd actually not realized Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (art director and character designer) finally confirmed it was entirely outsourced due to him being in the hospital at the time of production. I learned about the episode and watched it before he revealed that information. When I originally watched it the only thing that was known was that Yoshiyuki Tomino (Director, and many other roles) hated the episode and wanted to never release it and did manage to get it excluded from international releases. Tomino is kind of known to sometimes be cryptic in his statements and in regards to the episode he was always kind of evasive about clarifying what was wrong with it but everyone who watched it found it obvious that it was likely the animation issues which is why I phrased it that way in my original comment.

The Origin’s style isn’t retro though, not really. And it’s not canon to the main continuity, to be clear.

Amuro’s mom is definitely the one in the wrong here. Amuro was trying to defend himself in a war and she scolds him for it? Says she’s ashamed of him? And when asked if she loved him, she says something as noncommittal as “how could a mother not love her child”. She’s been absent from his life for upwards of a decade. Not for any other reason than her not wanting to go to space without further explanation. She has no right to be saying any of this about him.

"Retro" as in the character designs and mecha closely resemble the original, even if the animation is updated. I know there is a Gundam: The Origin manga that includes the Cucuruz Doran, but I didn't think that anime film adapts that entire story or has "the origin" in its title.
