Chapter 31 of Delightful Duty, in which the Dornish strike, falling into Rhaenyra and Jon's trap, while Viserys makes a nuisance of himself. Despite that, as the quick battle ends, the Rhaenyra prepares the next phase of their plan, one that they hope will get them everything they desire and more.

Very good stuff, can't wait to see everyone's reactions. Although can I request we get Otto, Hobert and the other Hightowers at Old Town to the news, and not just Alicent to represent the Greens? It's been so long since we've seen Otto especially and I would love to see know his reaction to Jon's 'identity' and what he's accomplished, would be hilarious 😂

Good work, loved the whole chapter. Only thing I'd note, funnily enough, is that Daemon 'sharpens' Valyrian steel. Maybe he could have a rag to polish it instead? Everytime I read stories where they are 'sharpening' their ever-sharp blades I chuckle.

Allicent and Otto will have an oppurtunity to mess with the princess here, if they put the idea in Vizzy T's head that he could join dorne with the other kingdoms by marrying his daughter to their prince he might run with it. And they suspect shes with Jon it will be a wedge between the 2 that they could use.

More likely they would try to wed Aemond or Daeron to Qoren's daughter as Qoren's wife is still alive so they cannot try to marry Rhaenyra to Qoren also given the events of the past few chapters why would Viserys want to risk his heir in an openly hostile and recently beaten power especially since she took part in the battle that led to Qoren's capture. Also isn't Otto still stuck at Oldtown I cannot remember him being present in Kings Landing in the last chapter so it would just be Alicent there and she recently used up a significant amount of influence stripping the Stepstones from Daemon and the Velaryons to give to a Redwyne bastard so I doubt she can attempt such a maneuver especially since Rhaenyra has already got a agreed upon deal that is favourable to the throne. With a significant number of Dornish wards/squires/hostages as insurence to ensure that the Dornish keep their word. Qoren cannot really break it as he isn't going to be released until Rhaenyra has a large number of her hostages and if he does after his release he endangers his own heir and those of his vassals. Also he isn't getting any better terms from Rhaenyra and if he tries to hold out he risks his vassals actually rebelling while he is unable to act against them and his regent is pregnant. Given how he has openly hoodwinked Viserys I doubt he will be amenable to lighter terms should he hope for him intervining on his behalf. If she is smart she will make sure the Yronwood, Dayne, Fowler, Blackmont and Wyl hostages (these houses are the traditional enemies of the Marcher lords and thus most likely to break said deal against Qoren's wishes) and at least the Allyrion or the Toland (close to Sunspear so should the Martells face a uprising they at least have enough force nearby so that they cannot be ambushed or at least have a safe place to flee too) are distributed to her allies around the realm, both to reward said allies without granting them titles and positions she cannot grant until she is Queen and to ensure that the hostages and their houses when they are inevitably released more favourable to the Blacks than to the Greens. It is unlikely she can place all the prominant hostages with Black allies so if she has to sacrifice some to Green supporters either because Viserys mandates it or to try and entice them to her faction I would give away the Jordayn, Vaith, Qorgyle, Uller, Gargalen or the various knightly house hostages as this group is mainly based in the Dornish deserts so are less likely to have contribute as much men or gold to the Green cause or they are to closely located to the ideal black supporting houses so can be either isolated from the main Green powerbases or stomped out quickly by said Dornish houses.

Eh Ned did it in both the books and show from what I remember a lot of it prob has to with the comfort of doing something familar and repeatitive rather than it actualy needing to be sharpened given it's Valyrian Steel

Ned in the books was in fact polishing the sword due to him having just beheaded someone and he was cleaning the blood off while contemplating his actions in the godswood.

Otto is indeed at Oldtown right now getting regular missives from Alicent and other agents, she also used up some influence getting a Reacher knight planted in the KG where she's already plotting to have them be Rhaenyra's KG in Dragonstone, hoping for a spy there. But I pointed out in the previous chapter how that would go poorly and stupidly if Vis pressed Rhae on it, since she'd just request Arryk/Erryk or another she can trust instead of the fresh KG that is clearly in Alicent's pocket.

Next chapter absolutely needs to be Viserys and the Small Councils reactions to Rhaenyra and Jon presenting Prince Qoren to the court for Dorne's surrender. More than likely what will convince Viserys to legitimize Jon and allow Rhaenyra to marry him is probably Rhaenyra telling him that she cares and loves Jon as Viserys cared and loved Rhaenyra's mother Aemma and hearing that Viserys will be convinced along with having the recent victory and treaty to justify it.

Had a suggestion for the future as another way Rhaenyra could improve her standing which would be for her to become a saint of the seven by preforming "miracles" using flesh magic that she claims to be thru prayers to the Mother. Plus I would love to see Alicent's reaction to Rhaenyra being named Saint Rhaenyra patron saint of Mothers and Childbirth.

More than likely she is planning to eventually marry her next son to her or failing that one of the lords loyal to her to peacefully bring Dorne into the kingdoms alongside the trade that Dorne will eventually survive on seeing how with trade to the Triarchy cut off they will need the rest of Westeros to survive let alone thrive. As much as the Dornish hate the Targaryens they all know that without trade their people would not be able to survive at all since most of the crops are luxury crops and not ones that a people can survive on so they have to import almost all their food. Honestly if you think about it if Aegon had just cut the Dornish of from trade with the Free Cities Dorne would have fallen years ago.

Great chapter and i like that plot is moving to big marriage day. Which undoubtedly would be whole new ark in itself as marriage of crown princess is not common thing. So i really hope we didn't have to wait whole month for new chapter. I must confess that after another of my favourite series,"Heat of Dorne", ended. I hoped that we would be getting two chapters of Delightful Duty in month. But as one wise man said: "Wish in one hand, shit in the other and see which one fills up first.". Anyway i like premise of new story "Alone no Longer" i just wish we got more of Duty. As it so little truly good fiction about Jon in Dance era and most of them unfinished.......

I agree the next ark is more than likely going to be the marriage ark. Hopefully that ark begins or the beginnings of it happen next chapter. Speaking of the marriage ark at Rhaenyra and Jon's wedding Jon should gift Rhaenyra something he forged. If he able to by that time it could be in Valyrian steel since that would be the perfect time and place to show off that ability. Myself personally I hope Jon reforge the Iron Throne into a proper seat for his Queen one that won't cut her beautiful self. Only question I have is where would the wedding be held since Rhaenyra Sept in King's Landing is still under construction if I had a choice in the matter I would have it in the Godswood of the Red Keep in an Old Gods ceremony. This would allow for Cregan or his father to make an appearance to administer the wedding.

If he forge something for her from Valyrian Steel it could be only one thing, crown. As his appearance in past, will lead for her succeeding her father and became queen. There also so much that author teased which includes ironborn and time skip. I only hope that marriage chapter would be rushed one. Whole point of Iron Throne in eyes of Aegon the Conqueror is so monarch didn't sit easily. So i believe Throne didn't need to change. As to why Rhaenyra cut herself in canon, i like explanation that was giving us by voice of Robert Baratheon from show. It was in some documentary i don't remember how it called. But he said that she essentially payed for this Throne by the life's of Jace and Luke. It is in general simplification but it's true. Her stress and worry made her cut herself.

Great chapter. The plan worked flawlessly & Nira will get a lot of political points with the Stormlander & the Reach Marcher Lord. Jon will definitely get big rewards from this. Whether it's permission to marry will depends on if Alicent get to Viserys 1 & his concil wasn't able to reason with him.

Bah, if she was REALLY smart Alicent would have suggested Jon Marry Helena instead and try to bring him on their side, or the very least drive a wedge between him and Rhaenyra, but she's too proud and stuck up to wed her daughter to a Northern Bastard 🤔

Well she already suggested that Rhaenyra marry Jon and she can’t really walk that back now that he’s defeated the Dornish so thoroughly, twice.
