Chapter 5 of Alone No Longer, in which Jon reaches the Wall around the same time as Rhaenys and gets to meet her, Oberyn, Bellegere, and Aemon, while across the Narrow Sea, Illyrio explains one of his plans to Viserys, who balks at it at first, but quickly comes around, much to Daenerys' distress.

The Fourth World

Are you going to use the stab alliance and maester conspiracy in the fic?

Voivode_Writer

Very likely no to the maester conspiracy. What is the stab alliance?

Cody

Great chapter!

I think that is an abbreviation for Stark-Tully-Arryn-Baratheon, or S.T.A.B. conspiracy, though I grant that this is the first time I have actually heard it called that so I am not 100%.

The Fourth World

The STAB conspiracy (Stark, Tully, Arryn, Baratheon) is the theory that these houses were secretly planning to overthrow the Targaryens before Robert's Rebellion. Aerys going mad wasn't the real reason, just the excuse. Jon Arryn and Hoster Tully wanted to end Valyrian rule and put a king of Andal tradition on the throne, someone who wouldn't threaten their gods-given rights the way Aegon V did. That king was Robert, raised by Jon Arryn (This is strange, by the way: why was the future Lord of Storm's End fostered in the Vale instead of with a stormlander who could teach him about his own lands? Who decided to send him there? And after his parents died, why didn't Robert stay at Storm's End to rule his lands instead of going back to the Vale and leaving a boy Stannis in charge?) They tied the houses together through marriages and fostering (Brandon–Catelyn, Lyanna–Robert, Ned and Robert fostered by Jon Arryn), and Rickard Stark joined for his "southron ambitions." We could go even further, Hoster set Brandon up to die. If Hoster learned about Brandon's rumored affair with Ashara Dayne, it could have threatened the plan, so someone fed Brandon the news about Lyanna, knowing he'd charge to King's Landing. Hoster still won: Catelyn married Ned and Lysa married Jon Arryn and the rebellion started. The maesters may have helped too, since they controlled the ravens, which could explain why Lyanna never sent word home. The maesters and the stab allaince conspiracy explains everything, who told Brandon about Lyanna, why Lyanna never sent word, the maesters gloating about "killing the dragons," why so many of Rhaella's children died in the crib Even Aerys's madness could be linked to the maesters, given how many references to basilisk blood there are in the story.
