I believe that they really care for each other. The older they grow, the more they realize it. And the fact that used used the thought of Lucas to escape from Vecna spoke volumes. He was her "Happy Place" in the midst of Vecna's dark place. And he wanted to be her safe place as well. The older they get, the more they get each other.

Indeed. They balance each other out. They have the spark. Lucas has been smitten since day one. They never explain any of their breakups, but but that makes sense because there isn't always a clear cut reason. Especially at that age.
