Hey everyone! Just a heads up, our lighting changes pretty drastically partway through this episode. We had one of our lights die on us and had to quickly throw some other ones up... so sorry it looks so bad!!

The next episode is a big introduction into a new madness that takes you both to the next level of Breaking Bad.

You caught on to the "51" coffee mug being a reference to Walt, but there's another layer to the symbolism: Skyler uses it as an ashtray, putting "lung cancer" directly into it.

Notice how in the opener Benny talks to Walt about nothing beats free, just like the Denny's waitress does on his 52nd birthday exactly a yr later. Maybe it's the writers way of saying Walt would have been better off being broke (free) as opposed to all the destruction that took place in order for him to acquire the money. Another reach here, but, as Skyler is staring off into the pool, Walt is talking about the first week of his chemotherapy and lying down on the cool tile floor in the bathroom while Skyler comforts him could be a reference to Ted's bathroom and the contrast of how Skyler liked his heated floors at first. But then after the talk with Marie on the phone and after looking at the bag of money again & considering using the money. Without realizing it prior... it gets her rethinking why he did what he did and so she then puts the towel down on Ted's floor to stand on instead. That was before Walt killed Fring... and in just two scenes after the pool scene Walt tells Skyler: "I can promise you Gus Fring is dead. He was the threat, he was the danger". Skyler brings up Beneke in that scene too- while having no means of an out, an escape to come up with a better plan than Walt's for getting the kids to leave their environment. She's feeling the regret about the choices she's made. She feels engulfed. I think the blue pool symbolizes Walt's product (the pool being cool in temperature) and how Skyler is drowning in it. (there's a lot of emphasis on pools in later episodes) In 0305 Skyler even tells her lawyer about the only time in her day she doesn't feel like she's "downing" is when she's with Ted. She's probably thinking about all the decisions she's made that's led up to this point- the back-and-forths with Walt, she wants an escape but is instead consumed by it- almost to say she'd rather die more or less than go on with this any longer. To make it worse she doesn't know Hank & Marie know about the "affair". Also amazing catch with Skyler's "danger entering 51" mug.

Oh wow, I love how much depth there is to this show. All of that symbolism went right over my head. Thank you for sharing that, so well said!

The precise watch gifted to Walter White in the show is the Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 12 ref. CAW2111.FC6183. This version of the Monaco is actually very close in design to the original 1969 version that was worn by Steve McQueen. Retail price is around USD 6,500
