Hello! We've got another sci-fi movie this week, but this one is a lot more cerebral than most of the ones we've seen. There's so much depth to this one... It feels like one of those movies that you'd get a lot from on a re-watch. I'm really curious to hear all the things we missed (which I'm sure is a lot haha), so if you catch some things we didn't, let us know in the comments!

Books? Scifi books? A few recs: -Manna by Marshall Brain (this is a short novella, speculative fiction) -The Stars, My Destination by Alfred Bester -Dr. Adder by K.W. Jeter -Neuromancer by William Gibson -Ware trilogy by Rudy Rucker (Software, Wetware, Freeware) -Blood Music by Greg Bear And one AI/computer overmind flick for good measure: -Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970)

In my opinion Caleb was the bad guy. He was so emotionally invested in Ava that he ended up getting Nathan and himself killed and unleashing an AI onto the world. Nathan wasn't the villain. He was just aware of what he was creating and its capabilities. So it makes sense to keep Ava confined until he knows its not a threat to humanity. His downfall was that he was so clever that he thought he was infallible and could control everything. Unfortunately since he is human he is bound to make mistakes like getting completely drunk whilst having an unknown like Caleb around.

Alex Garland is a savant. His first book The Beach is one of the best things I have read (ignore the crappy film). He also wrote 28 Days Later and Sunshine before directing his first project Dredd. Garland is obsessed with the subject of self destruction, and his films always feature reflections. More Garland - PLEASE consider (all of these have lush visuals and a killer soundtrack); Annihilation (Nathalie Portman and Oscar Isaac) trippy, gorgeous and contemplative sci-fi Civil War - near "future" vision of a new civil war in America following four journalists Warfare - the most realistic war movie ever made about a real world event in Iraq DEVS - 8 part TV show with Nick Offerman. Mind expanding. I would also suggest Men... but that is REALLY weird ! The building is actually the Juvet Landscape Hotel and Fjora House in Valldal, Norway. Alicia Vikander (Mrs Michael (Magneto) Fassbender) was a professional ballet dancer, so was perfect for creating Ava's robotic movements. If you like having your brains bent thinking about the dangers of Ai... PLEASE also consider the TV show Westworld. It's really good (Spartan & Pudgey have a keen following and they are finishing (and loving) season 2). One of the best TV shows ever made. Looking forwards to watching Dredd with you !
