Hellooooo! It's HULK TIME! 💚💚💚We're making our way through the Marvel movies and I'm loving it! This one was totally not what I expected... we got the origin story within the first few minutes and then BAM! We jumped right in. I hope you have as much fun watching this with me as I did!

This older Marvel movie is still my favorite out of everything that came later. It, and the first two Tobey Maguire "Spider-Man" films, feel closest to the older Marvel comics. The Hulk origin depicted in this movie differs from the original Jack Kirby/Stan Lee comic story. Bruce Banner was conducting experiments in the desert and an explosion exposed him to a potentially fatal blast of gamma radiation. In the original stories, Banner would change into the Hulk when the sun went down (or vice versa... I'm kinda fuzzy on that). He would imprison himself in a concrete bunker with steel-reinforced doors to contain the Hulk until he had changed back to Banner. I once had a collection of Marvel comics. None of the classic issues I had were in pristine condition, but just what I could afford to purchase from my neighborhood used book store, with my paper route money. I remember I had some old Jack Kirby-illustrated "Fantastic Four" issues, a well-worn "Spider-Man" number 7 drawn by Steve Ditko, and several dozen newer Marvel comics.

Yes, that was Lou Ferrigno as the security guard at the laboratory where Bruce obtained access to Betty's computer. Earlier in the movie, a TV set shows Bill Bixby in TV show, "The Courtship of Eddie's Father". Bixby was the scientist to Ferrigno's Hulk in their TV series together. Bixby had an even earlier comedy series in black & white - "My Favorite Martian", opposite the lead character played by Emmy and Tony Award winner, Ray Walston. I liked seeing these nods to earlier incarnations of The Hulk.

This movie is a great example of why reactors that are not familiar with the lore a movie is based should be allowed to make up their own minds about the movies. So many people bash this movie, yet I have see many reactors, even after acknowledging they were told it was "one of the worst MCU movies", still enjoy the Hell out of it. The MCU has defined its own canon for these characters and a lot of effort was put into making it all work together while building strong bones... well, at least for the amazing experience that Phases 1, 2 and 3 provide.

scott osborne

yes the security guard that was the OG Hulk i enjoyed watching alone with you and at the same rate of play so no pausing while waiting for you

Hans Engelen

You missed 1 scene on tv in the beginning where we saw Bill Bixby who played Bruce Banner in the original tv series. Also they snuck in a little nod to the original theme song after he ran away in Brazil.

Brad

Please can you make the marvel movies more than once a week:)

David Fürstenberg

This is definitely one of my least favorite movies, but I'm glad you liked it. I was just curious how you'd continue watching. Will you follow my list or just watch the MCU movies? I don't want to force you into anything, I'm just curious.

Kenton Kruger

Edward Norton is far better than Mark Ruffalo. Fight me.

There are many call backs to THE INCREDIBLE HULK TV show that many people have seen. The most touching one is the "Lonely Man" instrumental theme. You can hear it when Banner is in the rain and the location text for Chiapas Mexico comes up.

packersamurai

This theme makes me cry harder being a Widower. Much like Bruce Banner.

packersamurai

"HULK SMASH!!! HULK IS THE STRONGEST THAT IS!!!!"

packersamurai

Holy crap in a pita! The Jack MacGee character that is a reporter is the foil to Banner's character from the 1970s TV show!!! I'm having flash-backs, Chandra!!!

packersamurai

Okay. 200 IQ Chandra is on the prowl. First it's IRON-MAN and talking about the game of OPERATION. Now she says Emil Blonski is turning into a monster and seconds later he says he's turning into a Monster. Chandra, you're pegging the intelligence meter. Just like a Canadian movie called SCANNERS, you'll probably start exploding heads soon.

packersamurai

Signing off for today. Canada and Canadians are some of the best people. It wasn't until I watched South Park did I realize that Canada consumes more Kraft Macaroni and Cheese per capita than any other nation on the planet. Not only that, you gave us SCTV, John Candy, and Bob and Doug Mckenzie! May the Great White North always shine!

MaplenutsReact

Aha, and here I thought the security guard scene was the only call back.

MaplenutsReact

I'm so sorry to hear you're a widower ❤️❤️❤️

MaplenutsReact

I love that the hulk would only come out depending on where the sun was - kind of reminds me of a werewolf!

ChunkyCharles

Think you might be my new favourite movie reactor.

Nathan Jasper

I'm not going to start a fight here because I respect Chandra too much (and opinion rights of course) but I disagree 😆

Nathan Jasper

Even though it's not MCU, I would be curious to see your reaction to the (2003 I think?) Eric Bana Hulk movie - which also includes heartthrob Jennifer Connelly

FischerMax98

This is my favorite Hulk / Banner combo. This is a monster movie. A creature that everyone is afraid of and Banner is afraid of it getting out. But because it is darker and not overloaded with silly jokes and one liners, ( which do have their place, don't get me wrong) it doesn't seem to be one of the more popular MCU movies. Is it my favorite Marvel movie? No. But I do really like it. Great reaction. Looking forward to watching more.

MaplenutsReact

Ooo I love your description. It's totally a monster movie!!

MaplenutsReact

Oooo sounds interesting... I'd be curious to see how the stories differ!

MaplenutsReact

I didn't realize there was SO much! For now I'm just going to stick to the MCU movies (as that's all I can make time for). If we happen to be able to sneak an MCU series in here or there we definitely will, but no solid plans yet. I really appreciate the list you made though ❤️❤️❤️

Gary Leyh

Thank you! I haven't seen this film in years and it was better than I remembered.

Barry

I think that was a scene from "The Courtship of Eddie's Father". I always appreciated that they gave him a cameo. RIP Bill Bixby.
