I think Marty wanted to keep the case just so he could keep Rust on it. He's already respecting Rust's effectiveness as a detective (even though he doesn't say it).

the writing is so damn good in this show....Rust's personality, his philosophical cynical outlook on life and his history is so compelling....he is also really funny...like when Marty gave the girl some money.. "that a down payment" hahahaha

When I was young I did a lot of hallucinogenics whilst living a DJ lifestyle. There would be 48hr periods where I had not slept. So I totally get what Rust is feeling in this episode. You see things, and you know they are not real... but you just grin and roll with it. It's incredible I lived to see 30 let alone 50.
