✨ Back to Marvel Thursdays! ✨Okay, we're back on track now... going to keep watching the Marvel movies, because I'm madly in love with this universe and I don't want to detour anymore haha. I knew nothing about Doctor Strange before this, and now I love everything about his story and world. The magic in this is so unreal. And you all KNOW how much I love magic hahaha... so yeah, instantly love this movie!

Started my Maplenuts Patreon journey yesterday with Captain America: Civil War, and now woosh Doctor Strange. What to do? Watch it right now of course!

Derwin Riley

This movie is still so dope! Looking forward to this reaction!

You ask about why these characters and movies work - part of it is that most of the Marvel characters in these movies were created 45-70+ years BEFORE the MCU got started and MANY writers have had MANY opportunities to iterate through relationships and events. The MCU was able to cherry pick what they wanted and then build a new set of stories based on that rich history, while being guided by an overarching vision (at least for Phases 1 - 3.) Of course, that doesn't explain why DC has had so much trouble accomplishing the same thing. On second thought, maybe the Marvel just got lucky.

Thomas Yanez

Any chance that slacker of a husband (JK!) is going to join you for Infinity War/End Game?

Ian Forbes

Excellent points, Thomas. And there’s always some bit of luck and timing for movies, especially franchises, to work. Earlier attempts to make movies about Marvel characters didn’t work so well (Daredevil and Elektra for example) but Feige’s ability to set up a roadmap and tone for the main films after the success of Iron Man allowed Phases 1-3 to succeed so well. And hopefully with him being more directly involved of late, we’ll see the MCU return to that consistency after a string of ups and downs. I think DC fell victim to wanting to catch up to the MCU too quickly, mashing their characters together too soon (MCU allowed for more origin movies before the big team up), and not having a stronger head person/team with a roadmap or consistent tone (I’d argue they failed to understand the tone of the characters and how to translate those to screen as well as they didn’t need to try and make every film so “dark” just because Nolan had such success … especially as that was a non-connected Batman adaptation). And the lack of cohesion in story arcs only made it harder for audiences to latch on. Maybe James Gunn will turn that around as the DCU gets a bit of a restart with the new Superman (haven’t seen it yet) and he oversees the way the DCU will now unfold but only time will tell.

I have had more than several surgeries over my life. It's surprising what you hear before and if you wake up during light anesthesia. I've heard them talking about dates and family life, playing music (not quite that loud), singing to the songs. Just random mundane stuff. I guess it is just their job, we all small talk at work. To me Dr S is Tony x100 as far as arrogance, narcissism and just being a douche. Makes Stark look like a teddy bear.

Joshua Gideon

Strange seems an awful lot like at least to me one Dr. Gregory House. Also don’t quote me on this but I THINK the pilot that was hurt with the experimental suit wasn’t Rhodey but the guy that was in Justin Hammer’s faux Iron Man suit that Stark showed footage of in the, I wanna say, senate hearing especially as when Captain America Civil War happened the iron man suit wouldn’t have been considered an experimental suit. One final thing the thing with Odin remember at the end of Dark World it was revealed that it wasn’t Odin on the throne but Loki and Loki says “no thank you brother” when Thor says to Odin that he doesn’t want to rule Asgard. Anyways great reaction and yeah Dr. Strange is up there for my top three favourite MCU Movies

Chandra, the “paint and roto ” team I believe are responsible for rotoscoping which is a technique to trace/paint over live action footage in order to add or subtract elements in support of visual effects. I’m certainly no expert but if you have an interest in visual effects and stunt work, I’d recommend a YouTube channel called Corridor Crew. They’re a VFX team who weekly explain how effects and stunts get done; sometimes with guests who worked on the scenes they are looking at. I find it fun to peek behind the curtain and see how things are done too. 🙂

The watches are rotating to keep them wound up. Normally the motion on your wrist does that but when you have this many the ones you don't wear would eventually stop ticking. Thus ... they get rotated to simulate the motion.

Medical professionals correct me if I'm wrong, but this movie is one of many many examples of a movie-perpetuated misconception. The defibrillator (electrical shock paddles) are NOT used to "jump start" a stopped heart and simply won't work. They are only used when your heart is having a potentially fatal abnormal rhythm in order to bring it back to normal.

Jonathan D

Chandra, the bill comes due!...lol! Awesome reaction as always. Also, it marks the new Marvel opening theme song. Did you like the new Marvel opening theme song?

Jonathan D

Noooo, that would ruin the moment. Let her have her OWN experience. I am so glad that she is doing the Marvel reactions by herself.

The fact that he can fix his hands at any time that he wants to say's a lot about how his character has changed. His hands remind him of what he was compared to what he has become.

Nathan Jasper

that's true, that's why CPR is used first to restart the heart then a defibrillator should the rhythm need restored

The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) played Gabriel in Constantine. Looks wildly different without hair, right? It is unfortunate how sometimes we humans lash out at the people we love most when we're scared or hurt or damaged. I love the growth we see in Stephen throughout this story. He starts as an egomaniac, and rightly so because he IS the best in his field, and see him knocked down again and again until finally he's ready to listen. But sometimes we're ready too late. At one time Stephen couldn't stand the thought of there being a possibility of failure. Now he's ready to put himself in danger if it means everyone else is safe. That is amazing change. So, the soldier that broke his spine in experimental armor - that was seen in Iron Man 2 when we saw the footage of Justin Hammer having a test pilot try out his attempt at copying the Iron Man armor. The armor turned too far to the right, broke the man's back. So with this film starting in February of 2016 (months before the airport battle), we can assume the test pilot has been seeing doctors and surgeons for 6 years and still hasn't found help. And since Strange is talented enough to help, but finds the case boring, the test pilot continues to search for a surgeon. Of course none of that is officially confirmed, just my own headcanon. Okay so... can we get a Rachel McAdams poll? And a Benedict Cumberbatch poll? Cause this movie just reminds me why I love them both LOL

RP

I’ve watched a bunch of reactions to this and I think you’re the first to clock that the first potential next patient for Stange before the crash was Rhodie, good stuff. 🍻

Gary Leyh

Thank you! This is one of my favorite Marvel films (I feel like we've both said that a lot) and it was so much fun watching with you. Yet...the best is still to come!

Stropheum

Do you guys have a discord?

Wade Wallenstein

It's great going back to this point in the MCU! Forgot how amazing the introduction to "Mr. Doctor" is lol I remember reading some comics growing up where Doctor Strange was an important part of the storylines so I knew about him going into this. Some trivia: Rachel McAdams' startled reaction in the broom closet was genuine, since the mop handle fell completely by accident, and scared McAdams almost out of her skin. Scott Derrickson decided to keep the reaction in the film, since she never broke character. The scene where the Cloak of Levitation wipes away Strange's tears was improvised on set. It was a suggestion Benedict Cumberbatch made to the crew, who liked it enough to create it.

Back in the MCU's prime ... they're raking in the dough and expand the cast but do they say 'hey we can get away with cheaper actors now' ? No, they double down on Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tilda Swinton, Mads Mikkelsen. That's a tremendous cast in ANY genre.

MaplenutsReact

Oh wow, that's wild you've over heard things like that!!

MaplenutsReact

huh, that's so cool... I had no idea watches were so smart

MaplenutsReact

Heck yeah! It always gets me so pumped! I don't think I noticed a change though 😳

MaplenutsReact

So many good points ❤️ And I really loved them both too, would loooove to see more movies with them!

MaplenutsReact

Not yet! Sorry for my late reply. We're considering it though :)

MaplenutsReact

Ha! I love this trivia.. her reaction to the broom was too good. And all the Cloak moments were great, really makes it feel alive!

Nathan Jasper

Yeah it can't correct the bioelectricity if the electric current isn't flowing. Defibrillators are designed to correct bioelectric current, hence why the heart has to be beating.

Stropheum

You should definitely consider it! If you're worried about moderation i don't mind being a mod. I prefer not to but totally wouldn't mind if it's something you guys need

MaplenutsReact

That's a very sweet offer! We'll let you know if we end up needing one ☺️

Stropheum

for sure. I'm just here to bask in the cute wholesome vibes
