Garth Mindfeather

woooo! such a fun ride y'all are getting on here ...

Patrick

Yess, I needed a reason to watch this great show again, this is gonna be awesome! 🔥

Jon Johns

Holy cow! This is a surprise to me, I should pay more attention 😂. You're going to really love some of these characters!!!

Jon Johns

It's is (too) often said that "the books are better!" I didn't start them until after I got halfway thru season 4. Usually, the characters are better in the books because of how we read what they're thinking, or, there's more about their background, history, etc. my thoughts about the expanse books is that the ACTION is better, which is wild, because the action in the show is fantastic! But, the books are great. I don't think better, but, maybe a great companion to the show?

Christmas came early, this is amazing!

Yes, I've been Holden (pun intended) off on a re-watch. Happy to join you! It's gonna be an excellent time.

The Expanse is awesome. Although, I think it's relatively difficult to start for a lot of people, because it begins with its weakest episodes. I once tried to start this show with my partner and she fell asleep during episode 1. I thought "Yeah, that's fair." A year or two later, we tried to start it again (I'm pretty sure it was HER idea!) and she fell asleep AGAIN! hahaha. But you guys are already excited after the start, so that's a good sign you're really going to love this show.

Some of the most important things to remember about "The Expanse" : The show is not going to hold your hand with the story, it expects you to only be as clued in as the actual crew (with a few bits extra from other perspectives). You are expected to not have any clue what is going on for a good while until they start revealing info to the crew. Normal sci-fi tropes aren't going to help you here, the show is going to keep showing you (and the crew) how much you didn't know about what was going on yet. This turns off a lot of people. Especially because the crew doesn't even know that much about each other, and you also won't know about them until the show decides to tell you. So unlike many shows, this one doesn't start out with a crew that is buddy buddy, all-for-one, one-for-all "family" of heroes. They are a bunch of people shoved together by their situation, not necessarily trusting each other or even being that supportive, with dubious pasts and that causes a lot of friction between them. This also turns off a lot of people. You take the same journey they do, in discovery about themselves and about the story at large. I promise, the journey is worth it. :)

This series is especially noted for a much more realistic depiction of space travel and living in space than almost all other sci-fi shows. It’s also noted, at least by me, for only giving you information a drop at a time. It’s a slow build, but a great payoff.

I just started watching and noted that you said you read the first book.. there is a lot of adaptation that went into turning this into a show. Unfortunately, one of those things was adding a bunch of intra-crew drama that just doesn't exist in the book. Also, they bring a number of characters from later books up into the story of the first book, and merge some book characters together into new characters for the show.

Oh here we go .... strap in for a great ride!

I saw the Expanse upload and did a little dance in my chair. Any excuse to rewatch.

Been looking forward to starting this with you guys, I really thought you both would appreciate it. It only gets better from here. I have read all the books, which are excellent. The writing for the show is also excellent. They actually use the limitations of physics to enhance the story. A lot of the technology is based in reality. Plus it’s super dense with details, lots of detailed world building. You guys are going to love this!

So glad you are starting on this show, it's probably my favorite show ever (although Andor is fighting hard for that top spot). Hilarious that after spending two years watching BB and BCS that the next show you watch has a totally random Mike appearance. (no spoilers below I promise) A word about physics and gravity on the show. It seems like you got it from the flip and burn scene, but there is no Star Wars / Star Trek artificial gravity in this universe. If you want to create gravity you either have to accelerate constantly or create a centrifuge by spinning a large habitat ring. So whenever a ship's engines are on, they are experiencing some gravity (either "normal" gravity for just walking around or high-G like a fighter pilot when they need to get somewhere fast). Ceres is an asteroid with about 3% of Earth's gravity, so we would not be seeing people walking around like we do in the show if that was all there was to it. Instead in the lore of the universe, in a massive engineering project they strapped a bunch of rockets to the surface to get it spinning to create artificial gravity in the asteroid. That actually makes the surface of the asteroid the "bottom" and the center the "top." That's why when Miller throws the filter guy into the airlock, the floor of the airlock opens downward to space.

She was going to tell him she was Pregnant I bet.

Good show but not great. I feel like it starts very strong and then drops off quite a bit. Honestly I have not finished it because yes I got tired of it. For me quirky twists as it goes on made it less interesting instead of more. Sticking to the hard science fiction side of things would have kept me more engaged. As to the books, yes I found them a better experience overall. They seem about on par with respect to overall craft and quality. But a novelist can have a personal flair that TV can't capture. The way TV is made it simply runs through too many hands to have a great style most of the time. While a novel is basically a one-person endeavor and will therefore always express an individualistic vision.

oh my days, i wanna click more hearts for this one! you are rapidly becoming one of my favourite reactors. so, to recap, you have watched Andor, L.O.T.R., the most awesome '80s movies and now we're doing The Expanse? did you announce this and i just missed it? been in hospital a few times lately so i can see how that might have happened. plus, i'm kind of a dunce and have a tendency to miss stuff! all i need now is for you to start Peaky Blinders and i'll never leave. welp, thanks for this, i'm off to watch pt.1.

Well, let's give this a shot. I have zero exposure to the series or the books.

Just a suggestion, if you're not doing it already, you may want to put subtitles on for yourself because of the Belters have an accent and their own language (Belter Creole) and it would be hard to understand when they speak English let alone when they're speaking their Creole or peppering it into sentences. The more you see it/hear it, the more you can pick up the meaning from context. Even so, I still had to look up the meaning of some Belter words throughout the show. Didn't read any of the books yet, but I have watched the series all the way through at least 3x. Once by myself, once with Blindwave and once with Dakara. Possibly another time that I'm forgetting. I tend to put subs up on all my shows now because of 1. how shows and movies are mixed now, it makes it harder to discern certain words sometimes and also 2. you can see what are proper names and not, so you know if something said is the name of a person or place. I started doing this with fantasy (and sci-fi) shows since they tend to have more made-up names of people, places and things (like special weapons or books like "The Necronomicon," etc.)

ShadowDrgn

Pretty Good start, first time I'm watching something with you guys I haven't seen before.

pinkdino99

The Canterbury going up is one of those mouth open moments in TV history. I found myself thinking "I really like Navigator Byers" (Holden's g'f) and then boom.

erasure25

Omg you are doing the Expanse!!!! Best sci-fi show. Not best scifi in the past 10 years. The best. Periodt!

So yes, Season 1 of the show does incorporate some stuff from Book 2. Shohreh Aghdashloo, who plays the character named Chrisjen Avasarala, is a big name actor (you might know her from 24, or the last season of Wheel of Time - and certainly you recognize her distinctive voice). They needed to introduce her story into Season 1 of the show and not wait for Book 2/Season 2.

I’ve been enjoying your YouTube reactions for some time but now you are watching two of my very favorite tv series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and The Expanse, so I had to join your Patreon. I’ll catch up quickly and look forward to seeing your reactions to every episode of two of the best shows ever produced.
