Hey everyone! We haven't done a war movie in quite some time. This one was very very different from all the others we've seen, but we loved it just as much! The unique perspective made for such a compelling story and the acting, as always with Nolan films, was incredible. This is probably one of my favorite war movies so far! I can't wait to watch this along with you guys. Love this movie!

Darkest Hour (starring Gary Oldman as Churchill) is a good accompaniment to this, and fills what was going on politically in the UK while this was happening.

I would recommend the war films The Thin Red Line, Atonement and A Very Long Engagement

Guybrush Threepwood

Michael Caine being the voice of Fortis Leader is a great call back to his role in the 1969 movie 'The Battle of Britain'

I second the recommendations for Darkest Hour - in fact I feel like Dunkirk and Darkest Hour should almost be watched back to back. Another WW2 movie I think you guys would really like, especially because you're in the middle of the classic James Bond series, is The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. It's loosely based on a real event but it's directed by Guy Ritchie so it has a sort of goofy comedy factor to it - reminds me a little of Inglorious Basterds.

The unseen enemy definitely creates a more ominous or foreboding feeling along with the tense music throughout the movie. It also gives you that sense that time is running out for the troops on the beach. It's just brilliant. Nolan and Zimmer are the new Spielberg and Williams.

Never realized Aegon Targaryen was in this!

Fun Fact! This movie was the first I ever saw in a theater with reclining seats! I lived in pretty small towns most of my life 🤣. I'm sure you imagine what it must have been like in a movie theater, with surround sound, a have ge screen, etc.... it was amazing! Better than you could imagine! (Bonus Fun Fact!! Recall Godzilla Minus One? When the 'kid' brought a force of tug boats to help raise the monster from the depths? The director was inspired by this story!)

Nolan tells this story by intertwining three different timelines occurring at vastly different scales: Land (1 week), Sea (1 day), and Air (1 hour). These three perspectives run concurrently on screen but cross paths at the film's climax. (Nolans fascination with time!?! Almost as much as Speilberg & absent fathers... 🤷‍♂️)

If you recall the Tie fighters 'buzzing' the team in Andor, the terrifying sound is inspired by German Ju-87 Stuka dive bombers. I always thought they were scary.... Although, there is no sound in space 🤷‍♂️.

When Churchill give his, "We will fight on the beaches" speach, Hitler KNEW that England would not give in. He would have to cross to take it and they did not have the navy to do so. They had also lost the Battle of Brittian in the Air. That got really close for the English too. I will watch the movie soon. Both of my GDads and several of thier brothers fought in Europe. One was part of the Normandy landings. Not in First or Second Wave.
