Welcome to the very first episode of our podcast 🎙️ We had to start with one of the biggest conversations in music right now… the new album from BTS. Fans are divided. Some are calling it mid… others are saying it’s one of their most important projects yet. So we sat down and had a real conversation about it. In this episode, Terry (BRIS) and Peter (SOFTSERVEBOY) break down: – Our honest reaction to the album – Why people aren’t liking it – Whether BTS has changed… or the fans have – The “too westernized” debate – And what this all means for BTS moving forward Terry also shares his recent experience in South Korea filming with Netflix, and how the energy there compares to what we’re seeing online. "BTS Fell Off"… or Are Fans Tripping?!

No I don’t think fans are trippin’. This a departure from their past albums so for some this isn’t what they want. The English part bothers some too. I liked the album. Was a no skip for me…no but that is me.

I like the Album as a whole, but I do miss the pure korean albums with a bit of english mixed in. I would love to go back to the Wings and Love yourself era vibes. I will always support BTS and no matter what they do, they will continue to be successful.

Bro said he liked No. 29 to start out the album convo and I laughed cuz it's just one sound then silence lol but real talk I get what he meant by wanting more true korean influence since the album's called Arirang

First I'd like to thank Terry for giving context that's important when speaking on this album. I hope you read my response cause I think you'd agree. I think people are tripping and here is why... I think that people wanted BTS to give this deep lore and meaningful tracks but this album was NOT for that. They're coming back for a world tour we NEED the stadium sound. People do this with BTS EVERY comeback. another thing is BTS doesn't need to collaborate with S class industry people to prove who they are. BTS is who they are because they're BTS. Musically the album is BTS' sound. All the songs correlate to old BTS. You can feel the influences from O!RUL8,2? , TMBMIT, Dark&Wild, BE and MOTS. Also BTS has ALWAYS collaborated with western artists. July 2014 when they did American Hustle Life and learned stuff from Warren G and Coolio to collaborating with Usher, JCole, Erykah Badu and so many more. So idk why people expected them to feature more Korean producers/artists. The western world has been fairly good to BTS since 2014! 12 years ago! I also don't understand how people are confused about the western influences when during all their solo projects they went really western. V had that Daniel Caesar/Giveon sounds, Jhope went into so many different western sounds from boom bap to rap pop, Yoongi went the rock/rap route, Jin did his Coldplay record, Jimin shocked us all and Jungkooks album was ENTIRELY in english! sooooo the confusion about the sound is very forced in my opinion. I think people just want to criticize them because they're still going strong over a decade later and going strong after enlistment. Any other group gets away with putting out STRAIGHT BS or doing the absolute bare minimum (I'll be kind enough to not name names) . Even BTS' debut was very western the only difference is they used more Korean lyrics and if you watch the doc you know that they wanted to implement more Korean lyrics and were shut down. From debut to solo projects to Arirang BTS has always had western influences and sound so lets let this narrative of them losing their old selves go.

I would like to add to the appropriation conversation. There has been many times where black culture has been made a mockery within the kpop and western industry. The use of the N word, forcing blaccents, appropriating black hairstyles that are significant to our culture and hairstyles that we still have fight to be able to wear whether its in corporate world (the crown act 2019), on the red carpet (Zendaya, Oscars 2015) , or during a wrestling match (high schooler Andrew Johnson, 2018). If you're not familiar with the crown act it's "a law prohibiting race-based hair discrimination in workplaces and schools, specifically protecting hairstyles like braids, locks, and twists associated with Black individuals. First passed in California in 2019, it has been passed in over 25 states." So to have people wear these styles without understanding the cultural significance that dates back into slavery can be disheartening, especially because it hasn't even been a decade since the crown act and in some states race based discrimination is still prominent. Same with black fashion we created our own waves cause Brands like Tommy Hilfiger said they don't want to see black people wearing their clothes so we created FUBU (For Us By Us). Even now there is controversy with some brands LULULEMON not wanting black people to wear their clothes. I'll also add the fact that there's clubs in Korea that play OUR music but does NOT allow US in those spaces. They are idols that talk poorly about dark skin but then take the sounds from the people they would avoid in real life. There's so much more I could talk on but I will leave it at that.

Lululemon is so awful, I’ve seen too many videos of black people people being mistreated in their stores. But I have a question on the Tommy Hilfiger quote, do you happen to have a source for that? Because I remember reading that was completely fabricated, to the point where they got the FBI involved to figure out who first made those claims online.
