Youngro(jisoo) believes sooho(haein) is a protester but he’s actually a north korean spy

Kasey

Just in case you don't know already, the setting of this drama is in 1987 Seoul during their pro-democracy movement. Jisoo said her brother was arrested as a protestor.. this was very common. Many university students were protesting and were labelled as commies/North Korean spies for this. Many were murdered, abused in jail, it was a very dark period in Korea's history. As Suho is running from the agents, the protestors as singing a song that was used in protests back then. Apparently, some students were also killed in a sauna room so this is sensitive for people in Korea. If you would like, I would recommend watching 1987: when the day comes. It tells you a lot about what happened so you can understand the situation more. Another really good movie is called A Taxi Driver, it tells the true story of a taxi driver and a foreign reporter in 1987 Gwangju. In Gwangju, the protests were a lot more intense, I think over 2000+ people died but that news was kept a secret from citizens of Korea. The writers say it has nothing to do with the protestors, which we see as true in the later episodes. They just used this time period because they wanted to give the idea that suho was a protestor when he actually isn't so that gives jisoo a reason to help him. You can see the way he addresses his team as "comrade," something north koreans do, not the protestors. If you have any questions, anyone in the comments can help clarify it! Glad you're giving the show a chance, I thought it was too early to drop it.
