Ashara had never been a timid woman, but right now she felt as though she might tremble from the nerves coursing through her body. She was terrified of facing Jon and telling him the truth.
Jaehaerys Targaryen now. She reminded herself of this, but she would always prefer Jon Snow. That charming, handsome man who had come into her life and changed it completely. He made her remember what it was like to feel like a woman; he made her feel loved again. That man with whom she had shared a week of dreams.
But that beautiful dream was over, and in real life there were consequences for her actions. Yet she hated to think of the child growing in her womb as a consequence or as something bad. That child had been born of its parents’ love and passion.
In the same way that all bastards are born. An unpleasant part of her mind reminded her of this, and she quickly shook off such thoughts.
Part of her wanted to flee to Starfall; she had already managed to raise a daughter without her father. She was confident she could do it again with this baby, but that was the very reason that held her back and morally compelled her to tell Jon.
She couldn’t make the same mistake she’d made with Allyria; she’d deprived her daughter of many years of seeing and knowing her father. She couldn’t do the same to this baby. After all, Jon wasn’t like Ned, and he’d proven that during the time they’d spent together.
Come to think of it, it was ironic that she’d fallen in love with and become pregnant by a melancholic northern man for the second time. Although Jon was far more charismatic than Ned, she also felt she could trust him more.
Ashara spent her time thinking about every little difference between Jon and Ned as she walked through the corridors of King’s Landing. She went round and round, deliberately avoiding Jon’s room, until she even began comparing how the two men were in bed, and came to the easy conclusion that the young dragon was far better than the old wolf. But unable to avoid the inevitable, she ended up at his door anyway.
Ashara took a deep breath and plucked up the courage to finally knock on his door, but just as she raised her hand, the door swung open abruptly, causing her to recoil in surprise. And her surprise grew even more when she saw Princess Daenerys emerge from Jon’s room with a huge smile.
“Lady Ashara.” The princess greeted her cheerfully. “What a surprise, I didn’t know you were going to stay in King’s Landing.”
“Well, I have some unfinished business to sort out before I can return to Starfall.” Ashara said somewhat sheepishly, instinctively covering her belly.
Daenerys had always been a very perceptive woman; having inherited that talent from her mother, she could read people and what they were hiding very easily. And it turned out that Lady Ashara wasn’t very good at hiding her feelings or her condition.
“Did you come to see Jon?” Daenerys asked her with a slight smile.
“No!” Ashara said hastily before correcting herself. “Well, yes. Actually, yes, I don’t know why I said no.”
Chuckling softly, Daenerys walked round her and, standing beside her, replied teasingly.
“He’s inside; I’ve finished with him. He’s all yours now if you fancy having some fun with him.”
“Princess Daenerys!” Ashara said, clearly scandalised. “I didn’t come all this way to do that.”
Laughing cheerfully, Daenerys grew serious before pointing out.
“So, if pleasure isn’t what brings you here, that means you’re here for a more important reason.”
Ashara pressed her lips together, not knowing how to reply, so she chose to remain silent. Daenerys didn’t hesitate to embrace the woman, wrapping her arms around her before saying.
“Whatever you have to say to Jae, I’m sure he’ll listen to you and give you your due. He’s a man you can trust; he won’t let you down. Because if he does, Rhae and I will kill him.”
Those words managed to draw a smile from her and ease her nerves. Placing a hand over the princess’s, she said gratefully.
“Thank you.”
Smiling encouragingly at her, Daenerys said.
“I hope you can stay in King’s Landing for good, Lady Ashara. I’m sure I speak for all the members of my House when I say we love having you at court.”
That would depend on how her meeting with Jon went.
