Ch. 5.1 The Unfitting

Piece

[Part 1 of 3]

My eyes fluttered open to the white wooden panels of my ceiling. An odd but welcome sense of security enveloped me, the weight of my blanket pressing down, covering all but my head.

“...!”

Yet it wasn’t merely the blanket’s security. A warmth enveloped me from both sides; my arms were firmly wedged between the two bodies snuggled against me, their tangled limbs pinning me in place. Unable to move or confirm their identities, I still discerned two distinct bumps beneath the heavy, weighted blanket.

Sakura’s face filled my entire vision; she was positioned perpendicular to me as she greeted me. “Good morning!” She tucked a strand behind her ear as the rest cascaded down her right side.

“Are you feeling better?” She asked, her stoic expression softening with curiosity.

“I think—” I paused, moistening my mouth, as if testing whether my body agreed with the words about to leave my lips. “I feel a lot better, actually.”

I frowned, mentally re-evaluating my condition as I reviewed yesterday’s events. The debauched morning with Taiga, Rin, and Ayako; And yes, I remembered the new professor had also seen fit to orally ‘clean’ me.

My thoughts were interrupted as Sakura scooted closer, replacing the pillow beneath my head with her lap as she patiently waited. Her cool skin against my nape and head was a comforting contrast to the encompassing warmth I felt beneath me. Despite the comfort, my mind drifted back to my re-evaluation of yesterday’s events.

I wasn’t usually one to entertain the lustful advances of strangers, even when the attraction is mutual. Yet, in hindsight, she hadn’t given me a chance to reject her; she had simply begun by the time I looked down.

After that, I had classes, and I was supposed to give Ritsuka a tour of the campus. Fortunately, she’d met some of my friends, who took it upon themselves to give her a tour and make her feel welcome within the circle—a gesture I was sure Taiga would have appreciated.

Most of my classes were introductory, as it was still only the second day of the school year, and this was the first day for each of my classes. I was even seatmates with someone who came from Homurahara, I think her name was Kujou-san.

I also vaguely remembered her being in the student council two years ago—though, of course, they had to step down as they prepared for university. They were replaced by Iroha and her group, who requested help from our volunteer club.

I mentally chastised myself as I was getting distracted by my thoughts, even as Sakura’s soothing fingers gliding across my scalp relaxed me.

After my classes, a short reunion was paired with—perhaps a bit too much—indulgent fun with my senior and course adviser, individuals I already knew personally through Taiga. Afterwards, I escorted Ritsuka around the town of Kuoh.

"Chuuu…" A soft press on my forehead. I looked up to see Sakura kissing me.

“I have classes this morning, and I have already prepared some breakfast, so you don’t need to get up early. You can enjoy the morning with Yui and Yuki,” she said, gesturing towards the two lumps beneath me, giving me a teasing and knowing look.

Well, to be fair, I could've easily guessed who the two were. The only other options would have been Rin and Runeas, or Taiga – but she was either with Ritsuka or would've already left for work. It couldn't be Rin and Runeas, as they'd never share me in a bed. So yes, it had to be Yui and Yuki.

Replacing her lap with the pillow again, she waved at me before silently sliding the fusuma close. I felt both Yui and Yuki shifting, but they then settled.

I guess the ceiling and my thoughts would keep me company for now, at least until the pair wakes up. I peeked at the clock to see that I still have six hours before my next class, though I didn’t know Yui and Yuki’s schedules, but since Sakura hadn’t told me anything, it would probably be fine. Still, I’d wake them up in two hours, just to be sure.

Taking a deep breath, I exhaled loudly— “You know, if you sigh any harder, you’ll sigh most of your luck away.” A stoic yet melodious voice interrupted my continuation of my previous musings.

Looking down, I saw the face of Yukinon Yukinoshita peeking out from under the blanket; she covered her mouth as she yawned.

She rose up, letting the blanket cascade down her body, revealing cute pink pyjamas adorned with cat prints. Her face was groggy as she rubbed at her eyes, one side of her pyjama’s shoulder slipping down her arm.

Feeling the cool air hit the rest of my body, I realised the air conditioner was on. Yes, that was yet another clue as to the identity of my previously unknown snugglers.

They always loved setting the air conditioner to 20 degrees or lower and wrapping everyone in a heavy, weighted blanket while snuggling together. In fact, I thought this particular blanket we were using was a gift from them both.

Yuki started pandiculating as she transitioned from groggy to awake. Yui, beside me, grumbled and shivered as a blast of cool air assaulted her. She turned away, grabbing the blanket, wrapping herself in a cocoon, the crown of her pink hair peeking out of said cocoon.

Now that my hands were freed, I began to spread my limbs out—adopting what I could only describe as a starfish-like countenance—as Yukino stood up, still stretching, as she walked over to one of the storage spaces in the room and brought out another bundle.

She approached, settling between my spread legs. She unfurled the bundle, draping the heavy, weighted blanket over her shoulders like a cape before flopping down on top of me. With arms folded on my chest, her chin resting on them, she stoically stared. Her legs hooked mine, drawing them close, then tangled with them, teasingly playing footsie as she held my gaze.

“I guess voicing this out would be rhetorical at best,” she said, her voice melodically stoic as she tilted her head, resting her left side upon her folded arms. “How much would I change once I give up most of my humanity? If I change, am I still the same person?”

I felt her body involuntarily shudder at her musings.

“But then again, I’m not the same person as I was in my youth, last year, or even a few months ago. Maybe countless Yukino Yukinoshitas have already died, and we’ve just retained enough of ourselves not to notice.”

“Maybe, I’m just scared of that change… that instant change into becoming a devil, fae or both, would I retain enough of myself to know if that choice was either correct or wrong?—— The fear of not even being able to regret my choices.”

She then tutted, “Well, I guess I have my mother to thank, as she hasn’t changed one bit.” A sarcastic jab was thrown into the air as she drummed her fingers on my chest, the seriousness of her words above severely contrasting with our playful leg-play below, her foot still teasingly tangled with mine, reinforcing her grip.

“Now that I’ve shared some of my insecurities and doubts, why don’t you share yesterday’s incident with me?” Her eyes softened as she conveyed her silent support, though she bore a thin smile hiding the trap she had set when she started her one-sided musings.

“How very Haruno, or should I say Iroha of you.”

She lightly pounded at my chest. “Don’t compare me with my sister and—” she then donned a look of concentration, exhaling before saying, “You weren’t trying to hit on me, were you? I’m sorry—” She bowed cutely as she continued. “My heart fluttered for a moment, but after calming down, I still couldn’t.”

She looked up at me, her once vibrant, cutesy demeanour defaulting back to her typical blank expression. It was a near-perfect impression of Iroha, if not for the monosyllabic delivery.

‘Blink.’

‘Blink blink.’

‘Blink blink blink.’

Our brief staring contest broke when we chuckled at the same time. I flicked her head lightly as she rubbed the spot.

She then covered my mouth. “You were going to sigh again,” she explained, to which I gave a quirked eyebrow in return. I then licked at her palm, my mouth still covered by it, before lifting both my arms and resting my head in them. Her hand instantly retracted as she wiped her saliva-stained palm on my shirt.

I stared at the ceiling as I started, “Well, I’m not too sure. It all went pretty fast. From seeing Ritsuka and a lady being chased by multiple Fallen Angels, my attempts at de-escalating, then Ritsuka falling to the ground, blood everywhere, as her previous companion revealed herself to be one of the Fallen after stabbing her in the back.”

I peeked at Yuki, who was patiently waiting for me to continue, her chin propped up on her arms as she stared at me.

“I just felt a sudden panic as wand-wizards and Fallen Angels converged around us. I traced a copy of Avalon, trying to heal Ritsuka from the large, gaping hole in her chest, letting loose everything in my arsenal, not caring for their cries as they died.”

I broke eye contact as I stared back at the ceiling. “You know, looking back at it, I don’t think I even heard their last moments. Were they pleading for mercy? Were they cursing me? Were they even crying?”

“I guess in hindsight, the only sensory thing I could remember was the smell of flesh burning and sulphur.” I chuckled self-deprecatingly, “There wasn’t even anything remotely close to things being burnt.”

“After Rias was able to revive Ritsuka, all I saw were the dead bodies and the lingering smell of that particular night.”

“The night you are referring to was the night Emiya Kiritsugu-san and Runeas found you? The night of the great Fuyuki fire?” I nodded back at her inference.

“Yes, I guess the dead bodies did trigger some memories. I thought I was over that.” Lowering my hands, I wrapped one arm around the small of her back, the other placed on the top of her head, as she nuzzled her head against it.

“I don’t think I even felt bad for killing those guys; they were trying to kill Ritsuka and me.”

“Have you talked about this in depth with anyone?” My hand, which was previously on her head, was now on her back as well, as I rhythmically patting it.

“I guess, when I was a kid, with both Runeas and Vivian.” Thinking about her question. “Then again, even with that, I was never put in a situation where it could be tested if I ever actually moved on from that.”

Another self-depracating chuckle escaped my mouth, “I don’t think I get to see a field of dead bodies on the daily.”

Yukino reached up and grabbed my face as she scooted forward. “If you ever want to talk about this again, you can always talk to me.” She paused, looking at me as if she were scanning me for something. “Okay?”

“Okay, and thank you for this talk. Just saying it out loud was good for me…I think.” Our eyes lock as we feel the heat of our breath, my hand on her lower back sliding downwards towards her bum as I squeeze it.

Our short but emotional conversation turned into something heated as our lips mashed together.
