Back in early 2010, shortly after a brief tour to support Fangs! I found myself quickly back in writing mode for the next album. Captiva was an album designed by the label to have radio success and Fangs! was revenge against all things corporate. And so after I had gotten the sass out of my system (for the time being), I felt like there was a world in which I could meet the label halfway. I took up the challenge to write more universal, radio friendly songs. But I would do it my way. So I sat down and wrote a few songs and a demo of Oceans was the first among those few. A month or so later I travelled to Nashville to meet up with a few reps from the label and handed them a CD of the demos. A few weeks later I received a notification from the label that they were dropping us.

I wasn't entirely shocked. We had just released Fangs! to mixed reviews and communication had gone eerily silent over the last few months. However, I was perplexed why they wouldn't be interested in the demos I sent, particularly Oceans. When I asked the reps if they listened to the demo and what their thoughts were they replied with "It's not really our thing." And so a year later when we released our first independent release Your Sparkling Death Cometh, I was more than happy to show off Oceans as one of my favorite tracks on the album. And the song represents the heart behind being my true self.

Holy crap - this may be my favorite yet. I LOVE the ending with “I saw the future “

YSDC is one of my favorite albums and it even better knowing that the label dropped the band and a few years later you still made an amazing album! This reimagined version is awesome, thanks for the background story.

Yeah, when this album came out, this track was one of my favorites, if not my favorite. Just a great song. Glad the label didn't get to have it.

This feels like the epic trailer version of the song in the best way. That ending was just WHOO.

Love it. Im glad you rebelled with Fangs. It’s an amazing album. Still hope to this day for an audiobook of the story. Similarly to the reimagined songs. How involved with Exit Lights and what did you think of it? That was the album I first heard from you guys.

Interesting to know what happened between Fangs! and YSDC. Fangs! is still one of my favorites (along with self-titled and TCAA and TRE) so I also hope for an Hours-like audiobook treatment.
