I ended up researching pregnancy tests through history. Most of them didn't really work, but the ancient Egyptians were onto something with urinating on grain and if it germinated, the person is pregnant. Seems like that's about 70% true. that's really cool, and considering this takes place in a kinda "fictional" 15-16th century it would make sense that they wouldn't readily have mirrors considering what you said here about Venice
