important clarification: - Much like every other royal line, the son of the current emperor always immediately becomes the successor to the throne over any other blood relative. So currently, Jinshi's position is just a prince. - Jinshi as of the current time does not know his real parentage - The old man Mr Guard was referring to was the former apothecary Luolan mentioned to Shenmei that had died before Maomao came to the stronghold and owned the many books Maomao got to read in her "prison" - Yue in chinese means Moon so you can piece together who Yue is 😁 Just cute trivia: The flower in Maomao's new hairpin is a poppy flower which in chinese culture means eternal and devoted love

The guy is talking about the previous apothecary that served Lady Shenmei; Shisui saved Maomao by reminding Shenmei that they needed a new one, you might remember. Chou-u used to be named Kyou-u; he doesn't actually remember his real name at the moment, just the ou-u sound. Verdigris is pronounced "ver-duh-gree" (or "ver-dih-gree" depending on accent I guess). Jinshi has no idea about his true parentage. He believes the previous Emperor was his father and the current Emperor is his older brother; he does seem to have some sort of attachment to Ah-Duo given that he was sad when she left the Inner Palace, but he (probably) doesn't think she's his birth mother. He doesn't have a positive impression of the previous Emperor and as such when people compare them (because they do look very similar), he becomes agitated; this might also be because it demonstrates his 'Jinshi' disguise is ultimately pointless, because people familiar with the family line will recognize him as the Moon Prince no matter what he calls himself. He is also not the current heir; the 'Moon Prince' was a title given to the current Emperor's brother, it's not a literal indication of his place in the succession. At the moment, Gyoukyuo's male child is the presumptive heir; Jinshi, as the Emperor's brother, is second in line. Of course, this is perilous for other ways; Jinshi could be made the heir by the Emperor's command, and indeed a lot of people would see an adult man with command experience as a much safer heir than a newborn baby who may not survive until adulthood. Furthermore, as the audience knows, Jinshi actually is the Emperor's firstborn son and should be by all rights the true heir; if this were publicly revealed, he would be expected to take that mantle. Also worth noting: Luomen isn't Maomao's biological grandfather, but her grand-uncle (Luomen is Lakan's uncle). Lahan is indeed Maomao's cousin (son of Lakan's brother), but has been adopted by Lakan as his son; this actually makes his relation to Maomao rather strange, since she refuses to claim Lakan as her father. On the note of Lishu; while it is rather unusual for the Emperor to not sleep with one of the upper-rank concubines (and that would normally be interpreted as a slight against their family), the Emperor only sleeps with a select few concubines out of the whole of the inner palace, mostly just the Upper-rank and high rank. He may occasionally sleep with a medium rank concubine and raise her to high rank, but most medium rank and effectively all low-rank concubines will basically never see him, let alone sleep with him. This is intentional, as the women he has children with have profound implications for the nation's politics; if he wasn't careful, his heir could end up being the son of any random woman in the Inner Palace, which could have large political ramifications (especially from the powerful families of the Upper-rank courtesans, who have the expectation that one among them will be made the Empress). On the topic of the "Empress", I'm actually not sure if Jinshi is referring to Anshi or the previous Empress-dowager with that line; famously the previous Emperor was mostly a puppet of his mother, who was known as a particularly cutthroat operator. I suspect the correct interpretation is that Anshi prevented her family from receiving a name, but that isn't certain. And finally; "Maomao" the cat is also named Maomao, but her name is actually spelled with the Chinese character for paw/cat. Our Maomao's name is actually derived from the herb wood sorrel (it's the one with little yellow flowers the show occasionally focuses on), which is also called Maomao in Chinese.
