Minato did tell Momoka that he doesn’t like her and she’s the one who asked him to try anyway. So it is different this time, it fits with your definition of “casual dating”.

that's a fair point. there was so much going on in these 2 episodes my brain got overloaded lol

Alrightt angst arc!!!! 😭 lolll The way Momoka is already a hall of fame anime villain she’s so crazy with it 🥹 It looks like the anime is having to cut some of Minato's internal POV for the adaptation 😭 But I think the anime still get's his internal struggle across! It's frustrating to watch but Minato is feeling trapped and feels like for the sake of Koyun he *shouldn't* confess. Momoka manipulated the situation just enough where Minato thinks Koyuki would really dislike if a guy friend confessed and he knows Koyun has that trauma from middle school. And *because* he likes her, the last thing he wants to do is make her feel uncomfortable. But before he fully gives up, in the manga there were a few more scenes of him trying to approach Koyun to feel out the situation and each time she kinda runs away because the misunderstandings Koyun has 😭 And then we know Minato is working through his lock+key part of his personality but he actually was making progress! And did reject momoka at first! And then she manipulated the situation AGAIN and hit alllll the right notes to make him seem cruel for not giving her a fair shot. And what sucks is that as much as you want to blame it all on Momoka, at the end of the day if Koyun + Minato *really* liked each other they could just confess! But neither of them has enough conviction to fight for themselves or each other to make that happennnnn. ARRGHHH our children still have some growth left to do 🥹

To me Momoka comes across as someone who's on their way to grow up into a serial homewrecker, while making excuses about who came on to who first. And it's not even about the guys for her, but more so for the thrill of getting them to like her more than another girl, thus making her feel worthy. Which is why her instant reaction to a hurt friend in the flashback was "So what, knowing him first makes you better?" And that is her reason to keep rubbing her closeness to Amamiya in Koyuki's face, especially when he outright rejected Momoka, so she only managed to get a pitiful "Okay, I guess, let's try it". Like yeah, girl, such a win worth flexing, congrats 🙄 Also, it seems like she doesn't have actual connections with anyone at school, she just uses everyone around her: first Akine, then Koyun, and now, in a way, even Amamiya 😔 Which is a shame, cause she is clearly a smart girl, understands people well enough to straight up call out what's happening with both Amamiya and Koyuki. And it was fair to try shoot her shot at least once. But to keep insisting when he said no, and manipulate everyone just to weasel her way in between those two? Naaah
