In my opinion, there is no such thing as a good or kind slave owner. Ketil may offer his slaves to buy back their freedom while not offering it the same for Arnheid, which Einar was foreshadowing. It is a fact that a person owning another person can cause even a seemingly pacifist and kind person to be possessive. Ketil treating her well doesn't mean she's wouldn't be considered a sex slave.

There definitely is though. No matter what owning slaves is horrible yes. But there is levels to treatment received and the mentality of the slave owner. There is absolutely worse ways people can be treated. Is Ketil a "good person", no. But he is definitely on the "kind" side of slave owners. Naturally looking at it through the lens of modern times, of course we're going to see them as all bad. But you have to put yourself in the mindset of the time period, and compare that way, with the nuance of the time period in mind.

I'm not trying to look at it through a modern lens and I'm not arguing that Ketil leans towards the "kinder" side of a slave owner. My argument is that a person that see someone as their property can easily become possessive and abusive regardless of their pacifist nature. Therefore from my point of view, the term kind slave owner doesn't exist. Despite Ketil's pacifist nature, he was pressured to enforce violence toward that kid in the end. That tells me that he isn't truly a pacifist and more like a coward. One of the main theme of this series will be the exploration of what it truly means to be a pacifist.
