What an inspiration this movie is regardless if it’s good, bad or ugly. Markiplier had a vision, had the tenacity plus… the cash (always helps) to actually make something of value.

What I love is it goes to show you if you’re determined enough to make, chase or do. You’ll get there eventually.

If you don’t, then at least you know what it felt like to chase that dream and you learnt from it.

Not sit there pondering over that big haunting question - What if!?

It doesn’t have to be a movie; it doesn’t even need to be creative or big like a new job. Just something for you. Perhaps going for a morning walk twice a week as an example.

Anyways… Iron Lung aka the never-ending shopping list is what I’m calling it and you’ll understand in the post watch review why.

This movie is such an arthouse film and it’s not afraid of being so. It’s a fun movie, stage 2 fun even and such an interesting experience. If you’ve played the game, you’ll definitely enjoy it more as it helps build out the world/vehicle but also help you along with what I would say… “that’s better as a video game, not a movie”.

I very much enjoyed this adventure and afterwards I had such a pull towards the game, like what the Fu*k is the game like!? After 15 minutes of watching Markiplier (first time watching one of his videos too) play this game. I understood what not only this game was but also how bloody good of a job Mark and his team did with this film.

I do extend my love, concerns and dislikes towards this movie but with valid reasons. This was such an interesting suggestion and I thank you very much to all those who requested it.

It’s movies, projects and suggestions like this that help keep us all growing. Be it learning about filmmaking, storytelling or expanding your movie repertoire when it comes to the moving image. Bravo!

P.S. First movie/content I've ever watched on this channel where I had to stop it and change my EQ settings so I could hear it. The audio mix is odd on this film again, for desired effect I presume.

It might be a good time to mention that your EQ does affect your recordings, which can make things a bit harder to hear as I also have my own EQ. I use a Sound Blaster so that my EQ is hardware only, I don’t record much but everything sounds as it should when I do.

I remember when the film came out, a lot of people had issues with the audio mix. A lot of dialogue that you just flat out couldn’t hear. I get sometimes it’s a stylistic choice, but when it happens repetitively, it just becomes a bit annoying. Made me think I was missing key parts of the story when I first watched it.

He says this film was 14 years in the making. Yes it was self funded, but that was all because of his success and his fanbase on YouTube. He attributes all his success to them. So although it's a lot of money coming out of his own pocket. The fact the he got there with nothing but I shitty camera and computer to start shows us that anyone can get there. We just need enough patience, discipline, dedication, and passion.

Mate, I stopped the movie and changed the EQ so I could hear it haha. I've never done that before. Bit shite really but I adjusted like we all do when watching something.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Mine records the desktop audio in OBS but I've added a -10 to the bass to help not blow out your speakers. I also use Dolby Atmos as well as Peace so I get the best experience. I've looked up different solutions but they all say to turn off Dolby or other EQ's. I'm not doing that as I want to best experience when I watch. Most viewers watch without EQ so wouldn't even know. It's only a handful like yourself who have ever said anything. I use a Focusrite for my headphones but I just need a way to capture audio in OBS that is safe and not in Beta.

Im really glad I suggested this, didn't think youd dive into it that much but you delivered a college level deduction of it just in the bio lol. Thanks for taking it🫡

This is exactly what i wanted from you reacting to it. As you said i am a fan of mark so i have a massive bias so no matter what i would have said it was a good movie after seeing him work on it forever. So to hear the issues and criticism you have or what other people would have is perfect. I do completely agree to the pacing there was a point in the cinema where i was wondering where the ending was or how much longer and very much agree that brought me out of the movie. Mark is also the kind of person to learn from this and improve so who knows maybe the next project he would change the style to be more towards new comers or cold callers as you said.

Sphinx War

Fun fact, the shaking in the movie isn't just a camera shake. The whole set was mounted on a giant, mechanized rig, so those scenes where Markiplier is falling, tripping and struggling to keep balance (and the blood sloshing around too) are because of the whole set actually tilting. Great reaction as always!

I thought kind of the same as you Kai. Was this a good movie? Yes. Was this a great movie? A little 50/50 depending on who you ask to. It is a movie that deserved to be made and deserves to be watched, but the success of it came in general from the name Markiplier being there. One thing is having people wanting to watch your movie and another that they actually think it was a nice cinematic experience. But it does send a message that you dont need big studios or too big budgets to make a decent film, and also that you can take proper inspiration on games, even or especially indie games, and shape it into something that pays respect to them. Also on other side of things, there are 2 films that have been crushing the box office recently which are Obsession and Backrooms. Obsession was made with a budget of 750k and has made over 200 million dollars, having a strange phenomenon too that every week more people go to the cinemas to watch it, when it generally tends to be the other way around, and even more rarely with an indie film. And Backrooms is also made by a Youtuber and is based on the indie game with the same title, but this time with the support of A24, and is close to be the highest grossing film of the entire studio so far. In other words, its a great year for horror cinema and a great year for game's adaptations. Even Spielberg has praised those films, so they are just that cool

This movie has a lot of things I like. I love arthouse films. I love scifi and cosmic horror. There were sections, with the pacing especially, that reminded me a bit of Solaris (1972). But that's might be me reading into it because Andrei Tarkovsky is my favorite director. I saw this movie in theaters with my cousins. One, like me, was a fan of Mark and the game, and the other went in cold. The cousin who went in cold still "got it" and was asking all the right questions after (imo). Having watched some of Mark's other projects, I have to say this is his strongest acting so far. They played to his strengths (VO and expressions) as best they could in the edit. Mark has, imo, and issue connecting his face and his words. He can do one or the other well, but not both at the same time. To be fair to him, he is getting better. Under no circumstances should you watch Edge of Sleep. Listen to the podcast, sure. Watch the series, no. Bottom line, I like this movie a lot. Is it a good movie? ... maybe, maybe not. But I still like it. I've had fun watching it and having discussions with friends about it.

if you look at the game, you would be amazed how he decided this game of the thousand he has played to make a movie. you could probably play the whole game in an hour or so and yet he captures it very well, a one room game but with the right imagination it could be something incredible

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

I mention at the end that I watched him play the game for 25 minutes and he nailed this tbh. I don't know what other games he's played but something about this one caught his eye.

So we should feature them here on the channel then!? Another YouTubers film.... Being backed means they would have helped him which I don't mind. Depends how much hand holding they did, or telling. I hear only good things about A24 so 🤞🏻

Hey I just joined specifically to watch this. Im excited to hear your thoughts. I think Iron lung marked the start of something much bigger that were are already seeing the effects of. I dont think its a coincidence that we have backrooms and obsession which are absolutely massive right now and both small budget high quality movies created by YouTubers. Keep a look out for backrooms by the way that film is gorgeous.

Alita

Great reaction Kai, it was a good time watching! I'm curious about a comment you made at the end, where you mentioned something like struggling with the movie because you have to use your imagination, and previously you have mentioned that one thing that makes books better than movies (I could be misquoting) is that the reader gets to use their imagination Is there a reason why it works for books, but not movies for you?

Fsaitza

A24 has a reputation for being a flexible company with high quality projects, even when they were more indie than now, and being the vanguard for the horror film industry these last decade, so I think its a perfect fit for that movie and those kinds of projects. And also I love that it takes risks with young and new directors that end up putting the bar high in cinema, like Ari Aster with Hereditary or Robert Eggers with The Witch. And now with Obsession and Backrooms, both being also from new and young directors, I think they set the bar high again

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Simply because it's words. When you watch something you're looking through a fourth wall. The screen. The moment you see something, you've got an imprint in your mind. When you're being told a story or watching a story should we say, you have parameters to what you're allowing your mind to watch, understand and absorb.

I feel like the music is in part inspired by his love for the doom games

So crazy watched markiplier years ago when he was starting out, with quite low numbers on his youtube channel.. He's an inspiration to anyone who wants to do something.. just keep doing what you love doing & your audience will find you will grow around you.

You MUST watch these films with us here. I love your insight on everything the directors and filmmakers are doing and why they’re doing it. I would really like to learn how these smaller creators who’ve had their films come out in theaters come out vs the top dogs and I think you’re very very good at being objective because of your focus on the techniques and the overall film direction both cinematically and visually. It’s awesome to see you give your critiques, PLEASE watch Backrooms and Obsession with us. Love your videos ❤️❤️
