What a movie. What an adventure. What a duration.

It’s here, our journey continues with Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers.

I’ve been very excited about checking this movie out and not only that, I was super eager to see If me and Sam could get along. Spoiler alert… WE DO!!

It was a rocky opening shot to him though I must admit and immediately I was like, oh leave it out, here we go. You’ll see in the “coming up…” section.

After I exported this movie, I started looking at certain scenes again, more of full-size humans with Hobbits. At the time, I didn’t see the VFX or the practical’s because I was so hooked by the movie and the story within.

It’s so interesting when you’re watching without the story because I immediately started noticing different eye spots for actors or heads still looking in the wrong direction but at the time, I didn’t care. I still don’t care to be honest because some magic like this movie should be kept in a bottle with all its secrets. Fantastic!

Thank you, guys, so much for wanting us [the community] to watch this movie. I feel like it’s history in the making, a right of passage. Like I mention in the beginning, I saw this movie once when I was 14 or whatever, never again.

Today, I feel not only can I appreciate it with you guys but fully understand why it has touched so many hearts whilst semi-watching with my filmmaking lenses on. I feel inspired… Let me know how you feel after we’ve experienced this movie together.

See you on the other side!

Kai

P.S. Question is, how long do we leave it until we cover The Return of The King!?

Oh goody, now I have something brilliant to look forward to when I've finished my Dialysis. Can't wait.

Nj-Howey

woo-hoo, now the question is, do i start watching now at 12pm at night (NZ Standard Time), or wait til morning

Chris Clark

Oh yay a treat to enjoy when i finish my 12 hour shift at 6. I would say give yourself a week and then set aside a day for return of the king, as the extended cut is a marathon, but in a good way.

Connor

Not to be that guy, he did actually break his toe kicking that helmet.

NinjaLantern53

That's my evening sorted after work, can't wait!

Neko_Otaku_ Guy

We're going on an (4 hour!!) adventure. Yes please some Reign of fire!

Chris Clark

Aye that scream is a real scream of pain, but legend just kept on playing the scene. Same with the scenes in Fellowship where he dives into the Uruk-hai, The stunt Uruk performers saying in the BTS, he did not hold back at all, he proper dived right into them.

Max Back221

You're not going to believe this but Viggo Mortensen, who plays Aragorn, actually did break his toe kicking that helmet and the scream he lets out is him in pain but it worked so well for the scene that they left it in

Chris.N7

Lore dump, they don't really explain this stuff; Gandalf does "die" but he's not a mortal being, only his body is mortal. He's essentially a LOTR equivalent of an angel who get sent to Middle Earth in physical form in times of need, as the "gods" don't like to directly interfere in mortal matters themselves. So when Gandalf "dies" he basically goes back to the Halls of Mandos as a spirit until he's sent back. And since Saruman fell, Gandalf got promoted to be the new White Wizard. When one who turns evil dies they are basically barred from returning to the Halls of Mandos and left to wander the mortal world as an invisible spirit, unable to influence anything or reincarnate into physical form ever again. Probably a fate worse than death. Saruman, and even Sauron himself, are of the same race as Gandalf, albeit fallen versions. And yes Viggo did actually break his toe kicking that helmet, it was a real metal helmet and a real scream lol.

Ruukasu97

the scream at 42mins was real btw, he broke something

Nj-Howey

made it 1:55 hour mark of video, its now 4 minutes til 2am for me, i think i call here and continue when i wake up

Bubonic Bron

Vigo really did break multiple toes on that kick, and the scream was also him just yelling in pain, but he stayed in character for the scene

ManateeMan2004

When I heard that comment about Viggo breaking his toe I almost lost it, you've hit a very old joke from the films. Plus if you're wanting more Faramir appearances don't fret, unlike Boromir he makes it through his first film appearance.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

Interesting, it's sort of a common "media literacy" (Hate the terms use usually) criticism of people who read Sam and Frodo as gay instead of about friendship. Was surprised to see that read from a filmmaker.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

There is a great meme of Aragon introducing the 3 of them to Eomer, and because he says "of the woodland realm" instead of Legolas' dads name like with himself and Gimly, it just has him say "And Legolas" Then has about a whole minute of them awkwardly looking at each other in silence "Of the woodland realm" as he can't remember his dads name

Cheshers

I think you're definitely meant to feel sorry for Smeagol! Gollum though? Not so much. Gollum to me is the manifestation of the ring's corruption, you got a glimpse of it in Bilbo as well in the first film if you recall.

Cheshers

As for the tenderness portrayed between Frodo and Sam... regardless of how you interpret it, in the spirit of pride month I would invite anyone who is genuinely upset about Kai suggesting anything romantic to ask yourself why that bothers you so much.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

To clarify Arwen's decision. She is still immortal, but she is giving up her chance to go to the undying lands (sort of heaven) with all the rest of her kind. Aragon will eventually die, and unless she is killed, she will be alive forever, without him or her people.

Chris Clark

Kai: "Surely there can't be bigger battles in the next one?" Return of the King: "hold my beer!"

The night is Dank and full of Memers

The point of the scene with the kid and the sword isn't to have a payoff with him later, but to show Aragorn trying to give hope in a hopeless situation, the sword looks like it couldn't cut a loaf of bread, but he isn't about to tell him that! He knows that kid is dead, but gives him hope anyway.

The extras/making of features on these films (LOTR Trilogy) are some of the best of any DVD discs released to date an inspiration to any up & coming film makers or anyone who wants to get into the film industry.. weather it be acting, cinematography, special effects, cgi, model making, directing, writing... it covers everything!

Chris Clark

I have to say Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of those films and like some TV series that actually suffers from a 4k restoration. You can totally see the greenscreen parts, the layers of the comps. Where as in the standard definition the blend is better and its really hard to notice, whats real, CGI and miniature work. Its like some of the 4k classic doctor who releases, some of the stories really suffer from the 4k, as you now see things you weren't meant to see. Lord of the Rings its the same thing.

The night is Dank and full of Memers

3:41:40 Ok we have settled on the problem. Why would you ever gauge people's take WITHOUT context? Why would you value their take on a scene without seeing all the scenes prior? Your example of reading is also not accurate. The hobbits are described to you in the book, the same way they are in the film, how they look and sound is in the writing. The same thing would happen if you showed a bunch of people a single page of dialogue without context. Scenes don't exist in a vacuum

The night is Dank and full of Memers

Might want to consider a different angle. Kai is making fun of it for those elements. For me it's genuine surprise at a filmmaker having what is the commonly criticized "Bad media literacy" take of their relationship. And to justify at the end of this still saying "If you showed people a scene without context they would think they are gay." Context is kind of important... If it was actually a gay story, then it would be homophobic for people to take issue with that fact. When it is incorrectly read as that, pointing out that it isn't one, isn't homophobic whatsoever. As it seems you might try to invalidate my saying this and claim Homophobia, Last of us S1 Episode 3 is my favorite episode. It's about good stories, not identity politics. The criticism here is about Kai's read, from me at least. Not seeing anyone being homophobic.

Feyd

I'm more of a sci-fi guy myself, but this trilogy really is an absolute masterpiece from every bit of its' creation.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Reading is not the same as the film. You're incorrect on this. Through the eye of a lens or image that has already been made. There is intent by the director and it will become subjective. Like all art I guess. In a book, yes the writer is trying to tell you something, a story but even their version will differ from yours visually and they wrote it.

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

If it was gay, I'd love it. It's two friends, I love it! What I find funny is some members of the audience hate that I would even consider it. It's all there on the screen. Just how you look at it.

Cheshers

Thank you for your thoughtful comment! I don't think Kai actually believes they are gay, but he mentioned people getting cross at him for just pointing out that the portrayal of their relationship COULD be interpreted that way, which was what prompted my comment. If your (using general you here) knee-jerk reaction to someone drawing attention to a possible queer read based on what is shown on screen is to correct them and cry "not gay!!", I would still push back and wonder why you care - because it seems a theoretical romance would only be objectionable under toxic masculinity. If that's not you, my comment wasn't aimed at you - TLOU S1E3 was my favourite too :) Having said that though, looking back I have to agree with you that it seems Kai is ridiculing the softness itself at times rather than trolling that segment of his audience, and it's not a good look, so I appreciate you calling it out. Never a bad time for us to look inward and reflect :)

Cheshers

Oop beat me to the punch while I was writing my little paragraph there, this makes me happy though! ❤️

Zoozee

Your comment about Viggo braking his toe had me in stitches, because he actually did brake his toe:-D

Makix217

I loved watching the commentary versions as well. Billy Boyd and Dominique Monaghan's commentary was hilarious.

BaconJets

I'm glad you were able to finally see what makes this trilogy so special. So epic, yet sincere and intimate at the same time. This trilogy always gets a rewatch when I'm going through some dark times, because it always lifts me up.

We must not forget that Smeagol was a victim of the Ring and thus became Gollum—a creature without honor, without friends, reduced of worshipping his “treasure,” without which he could not live. Frodo has a very real fear of becoming like him the longer he is exposed to the Ring. Seeing the spark of “humanity” in Gollum is as if Frodo was giving himself hope that he could somehow overcome all of this without becoming irretrievably corrupted.

Charl de Villiers

Oh god I agree with you on the Wilhelm scream. Always takes me out of the moment. In every fekin movie

Ian Davidson

You like theese ones, wait till you watch the hobbit prequals (assuming you haven't seen them)

Thomas Jenner

you cracking up at sam and frodo always brings a smile to my face

Zero Blazer Gaming

at 42:00 Viggo, Aragorn's actor, did break his toe when he kicked the orc helmet. Which was metal. Also in fellowship when Aragon stabbed the one Irubai only to have the same orc throw it back to him, instead of using a prop blade it ended up being a metal blade that got launched at Viggo, with the deflection being just good timing on Viggo's part

Sympotaz

The thing is miss about these types of fantasy movies isthat nowadays they completely replace prosthetics for CGI and it just makes it uncanny in a sense. I understand prosthetics can be a pain for the actors but damn it looks so much better than than 99% of CGI nowadays. Like use cgi when you really need but actors in mad ass makeup cannot be replaced!

Sympotaz

For a suggestion. There is a movie called "Code 8". It is one of my favourite short films that was, thankfully turned into a full feature film due to its fans. I would suggest watching both and think you would enjoy both!

Cory Power

Return of the King ASAP- love your breakdowns of this trilogy

CK Money

Tolkien came up with the Dead Marshes from his experience in WW1. Trench and artillery craters would fill with water and the bodies of the dead would float.

Travis

A bit late to the party, but what you said about the whip triggered a memory. Went back to the book, and when the Balrog grabs him with the whip, he does actually wrap it around both of his legs.

snqu

We want the return of the king!

Gwen

Stalking this patreon for Return of the King daily. One of my absolute favorite films.

Máté Dusik

Funny thing is, you mentioned how characters being sharp on the screen compared to their surrounding, making it look a bit aged - when it came out, after watching it in the cinema, we had a VHS for the first one, and DVD for the second and third - and such details could not really be made out. So while I can see it here as you mention it, I've seen it at least a dozen of times before, and never really noticed this. And because of this, it might have been more believable, and thuss more enjoyable - but I still love me some high resolution movie. :D

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

Movies in the day or still thanks to real film. They will always have more believability due to the softness. I remember when TV sitcoms converted to 4K and then suddenly, the sets looked like sets.

Kain D. Zero

I love Treebeard. An amazing character and one of my favorites.

Kain D. Zero

I did feel sorry for Smeagol.

Kain D. Zero

The book is better since it has more story and more characters. Tom Bombadil is one nice character that was left out.
