My first Metal Gear game ever! - Technically! We have covered Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance but I know that’s a spin off.

I was slightly worried starting this like I mention in the intro, “what can I cover regarding filmmaking techniques on a PS1 game!? Oh boy… Apparently, quite a lot!

Speaking of the intro, tell me what you think of the trailer in there featuring David Hayter’s very first feature film!?!?! He may be Solid Snake for you but for me, this voice is something special. Not just his either, the whole cast in this game is next level when it comes to delivery. I’ve never wanted to be as much as I do now a VO artist, that’s how cool this is! They made it cool.

What I like about us covering a 1998 title is the techniques that are on display here. What Kojima-san did to leave that lasting impression. How it was ahead of its time. What they did to lift the production values. Lastly, why this game (cinematics at least) have stood the test of time even though the models have faces that look like thumbs. Thumb war anyone?

Yeah, Tactical Espionage Action bonkers!

YESSSSSSS! Can’t wait to start this!

Feyd

Excellent. This came up about ten minutes before I start work. Now I get something new to listen to while typing prescriptions today. Alright!

Alex

David Hayter also was a writer for the first 2 x-men movies

Jonas B

I've been waiting for this!!!

Michael Fanning

Mate, you won't be disappointed with the others too. MGS2 is a masterpiece, so is 3 (I recommend watching the remake of it, MGS Delta) and 4 & 5 are brilliant too. You're in for a treat

Ocelot

Deepthroat is a nod to Mark Felt, he was high up in the FBI I think in the 70s and was a whistleblower for Watergate, he gave himself the nickname Deepthroat, a play on words from a notorious film back in the day and that Mark was providing deep intel. When this game was made though Mark Felts identity was still unknown

Ocelot

The pshyco mantis cut scene, he talks about your gameplay first, basically whoever made this video is crap 😆. When he said your memory is clean, he read your memory card back in the day and would say what games you've previously played. The controller on the phone was mind blowing in the day, the controller would move over to the left and right.

Sputnik

There was actually a remake of this game made for the GameCube called Twin Snakes. Definitely worth a look sometime!

Ocelot

You can access internet browser on steam deck so that could turn dark real quick if he read your history I'm sure

Feyd

Man, the Psycho Mantis fight was so cool back in the day. If you had other Konami games on your memory card in the PlayStation, he would talk about them. Then you had to move your controller from port 1 to port 2 or he would react to every movement instantly and counter you. I have no idea how this would work on PC. If you switched the port though, he'd constantly be screaming "WHY?! WHY CAN'T I READ YOUR MIND?!" It was such a cool fight. For the torture scene, if you submit or fail to resist the torture, it changes the ending. I won't spoil it. The code on the back was literally in a screenshot on the back of the game's physical case. Just a picture of the codec conversation between the two characters. You had to figure out that the frequency in the screenshot was what you were looking for.

Sputnik

Psycho Mantis is a crazy boss fight. He actually checks your memory card and if you have any Konami games saved, he'll name them and threaten to delete your saves. The screen sometimes goes black and just reads "Hideo" in the corner, like he changed your video input. And to beat him, you need to unplug your controller and put it in port 2. I don't think there's ever been a boss fight quite like Psycho Mantis.

Jonas B

Alrightttt done with the video now! I'm so so glad to see and hear you enjoy it as much as you have! It only gets better as it goes on too! This game was soooo ahead of it's time it's unreal, and I'd argue it still holds up great too! Can't wait to see more and I hope you'll continue to enjoy the series! It always finds ways to one up itself.

Feyd

Agreed. I don't think there's ever been anything as creative from a technical standpoint, requiring changes to the physical play area like that.

Volfur

Metal Gear Solid has always been a head of its time with every game. The series is extremely famous for pushing the boundary's on the current tech and film techniques,.There really was nothing like this back then. But if there is one thing i miss its how it worked on CRT tv's. The colors, film grain etc all played a massive part in making models and textures look better as it would trick your eyes

Dramattic Devon

I remember when I rented this game at the video store when I was 13... they put the games in their own branded covers. so when i needed to call meryl I searched EVERYWHERE raging and never found the cd case. eventually after about 8 hours i decided to dial every single frequency. took a 151 tries. i will never forget that experience.

Roy Corvette

AHHH IM SO EXCITED FOR YOU TO EXPERIENCE THIS SERIES

Roy Corvette

On your question about whether they've remastered/remade this game, they did actually on Gamecube. While I personally like it myself, most fans didn't like how over the top they made it so the general consensus is still to just play the original

Jellyman5k

I remember having to resort to rubbing a spoon on my controller to help me get through the torture section, that shit felt like torture on my hands without any assistance lmao.

VonEv1l

What a thrill

Razaroic

There is a remake of MGS, but it's slightly different. Called the Twinsnakes.

Ruben Jacobs

This game actually did recieve a remaster on the Gamecube. It's basically the exact same game but with the graphics and mechanics of Metal Gear Solid 2. The game was quite controversial because the new mechanics put into the exact same level design kinda broke certain things, and the remade cutscenes were even more over the top than the ones in the original. Snake does a lot of unecessary flips in that one.

Ian Davidson

One of the greatest games of all time in my unqualified opinion

The Dutch Dude

Starting with metal gear solid 1 was a great choice! Its insightful to see all of the cinematic techniques Kojima used with su h limited hardware. I love metal gear because of the bonkers storytelling and great writing, now I like it for the filmmaking!

The Dutch Dude

Metal gear is one of those franchises where each game just gets better and better, when I stumbled across this channel a year ago metal gear was the first series I thought about recommending.

Thomas Jenner

This has probably been mentionedentioned by someone, but Kojima really wanted to direct films but couldn't, so he moved to games which is why the cinematography is so good

The Dutch Dude

YOU DONT EVEN KNOW THE HALF OF IT CHUM

Lars Evenrud

I'm assuming this trivia is known to most, but I figure I'll just spell it out: The animation shown during Otacon's intro (01:17:00) is shots taken from Hideo's previous game Policenauts. There's also a tie-in with Kai Zammit's channel here, because the outro music he uses for his vids is "End of the Dark" - the intro music from Policenauts. While the song might not be known to everyone, many probably recognize the "do-do-do" voice part. Kojima reused this for the Konami logo shown when you boot up MGS1. That jingle has since become heavily associated with Konami and particularly the PS1 era.

G Lord Robinson

Respect on speaking on the physical media thing at the end of the vid sir. I hate that Sony is making us hate them, I will be going to PC come 2028

Selph

I also grew up on Gex, Soul Reaver, Spyro, and Crash as a kid. Then a buddy lent me Resident Evil and Metal Gear when I was like 10 or 11, and I was instantly in love. (Luckily my parents weren't really paying attention to what I was playing, haha!) It was a total mind blown, honestly, besides FF8, nothing else even came close when it came to the story, the narrative, or the cinematography. For the Psycho Mantis fight, the devs went all-out with the mind-reading stuff. Basically, he’d read all your inputs and dodge every single attack. To get around it, you had to plug your controller into Port 2, it was insane! :D Also, the Ocelot torture was way too much for my kid hands. On my very first run, I actually had to give in and submit, which had a pretty big impact on me (but I won't get into that :b). Anyway, everything about MGS is just brilliant. Can't wait for you to get to MGS2 and 3!

Isma

The benefit of an ambitious vision on limited hardware. Make the devs work more to get all they can out of it. Cinematography and gameplay ideas alike.

Isma

Where is part 2? WHERE IS IT? (*in batman's voice*)

Kai Zammit - Filmmaker Reacts

As my dad used to say, "up my arse hanging on a air bubble!" 😂 Putting the final touches on it now with the hopes of me uploading later this evening. I've got my children too so I'll try.

Isma

All good man just that I really enjoyed part one and wanted to keep going. On your own time buddy.

Noobinitas

Metal Gear, LOK and Final Fantasy were a big part of my teens and glad I was able to enjoy them back then and to this day they still hold up

Jake Kez

Had to hop on Patreon for this one. Ever since death stranding, I couldn't wait for you to cover this series.

David

@Kai, I played this game for myself, after watching my best friend beat it more than once, on a PS1 I dont think I ever beat the game Got at least a few bosses into it Your reactions to this have made my weekend. Ive got the day off. Listening to you watch this, while I play Pokémon go on the trail Nerd

Alan Stock

I also spent days trying to figure it out. In the end I gave up and used ye internet of old to go to a good old forum or gamefaqs or something. I was so annoyed when I found out!

Alan Stock

You were right in that at any time you can call up any character on the codec who you have a fequency for (and yes you dial it in manually, but can save each frequency afterwards for insta-use). There is absolutely tons and tons of voiced dialogue where you learn about all the supporting characters, the bosses, etc and it's situational. So if you are in a boss fight you can call to find out about the bosses weapons, tactics, history, etc, like in Psyhco Mantis you'll get hints to swap the controller port etc. In other locations you'll learn about the area. You can get tons of random factoids about wildlife, genetics, nuclear war, science, anime, etc from the various specialists. It's wild. Bosses are sitting there like 'Snake please get off the codec....'

Alan Stock

Was it considered a cinematic game back then, well from my experience playing it at the time, we hadn't seen anything remotely like it. It's literally like playing a movie, it was so miles ahead of its time with the cutscenes, cinematography, atmosphere, that much voice acting was unheard of. And technically it was a total marvel on the PS1, it just blew everyone's mind (including mine). There really was nothing else on that level outside of stuff like CGI cutscenes, but this was a whole game of it! I got my PS1 a few years after release with Croc (yes I too had Croc), FF7, Resident Evil 1 and this. FF7 was a ground breaker in the RPG/graphics/CGI department but this was the first real cinematic action game I think.

Just finished the vid - answers to some of the questions there: - Yes the controller vibration was used for the bit where you put the controller on the floor for Psycho Mantis and putting it against your arm. It was cool and not many games used this new fangled vibration feature in interesting ways. Other folks have already talked about all the cool 4th wall stuff Mantis picks out about your save/memory card. - The Meryl codec code was indeed on the back of your game CD case in real life! What a bastard/genius move. So many people including me got stuck for days on this, before the days where you could just google everything. I think I ended up getting the answer off an old version of GameFAQs website. What made it worse is they give you that optical disk at the same time as an item so its natural to assume its something to do with that. This was one of the first games to do such meta things, you'd never even think to look at something in real life compared to these days. Great stuff. - The codec calls aren't really spliced in this vid, aside from a few time cuts. They are incessant and very long. In some points like near the start you get a call, take 2 steps and get another call! Even back then it was quite annoying but the dialogue and story helped in keeping you invested despite the bad gameplay pacing. - It's worth watching the alternate stuff if you give up or fail on the torture game on Youtube. It was actually really hard, you had to pummel that circle button so fast and it made your thumb sore! - The controls are pretty bad in this game on PS1 controller and quite complex. Aiming and shooting is especially horrible which you were wondering about, no dual sticks so you had to hold a button and move around trying to aim in the right direction.
