Can't wait for Kai to reach the last third, minds are gonna be blown. I am really happy tho see the journey being continued so swiftly. Also having my coffee ready im my new bialetti double walled glass mug. Also, also do you notice something about the Codec screen? The shape of the volume meter is shaped like a gun.

It's funny you mention about the new character Raiden introduced. I didn't mind it but the backlash was quite extreme. In fact I can't think of a game before this that got so much hate. Kojima did a bait and switch and generally it was hated at the time, but it aged well and Raiden is quite a beloved character now. It mainly came down to the hype of MGS2 and with a new console generation and the sequel to THE game the expectation was so high. All the trailers only showed the 'tanker part' so we as gamers had no idea. But looking back at it now it was typical Kojima. It'll be interesting to see you go through this game and see how scary accurate the story is in regards to how we are progressing as a society today. And this was 25 years ago! You are right matrix came out during the development of this game and you can see the inspiration from it. Anyway enjoy and remember this only the second game!

So glad you're back to Metal Gear! This one specifically is quite wild. And yes, a lot of people were really pissed off at the protagonist bait and switch back in the day. Raiden wasn't included in the marketing and even the trailers only ever showed Snake. It's quite genius.

Michael Fanning

Mate, when you do Metal Gear 3, you MUST do the remake, it's the same story but with modern graphics/sound etc. it's brilliant

Neko_Otaku_ Guy

People did NOT like Raiden and the fact you only play as Snake for an hour or so. Plus, alot of the scenes are reminiscent of the first game, the elevator removing his mask, the corridor like the ninja scene. Snake Pliskin is Kurt Russell's character from Escape from New York and Escape from L.A.

Feyd

100% on both accounts. I was furious when I finished the game to find out you never go back to playing Snake. In the demo: you played Snake, the marketing: Snake, the first mission: Snake... cause that was the Demo. Then full on bait and switch to some new character. I think it's entirely the fault of the demo/marketing/first mission. No one cared that the playable characters from Resident Evil 1 changed in Resident Evil 2. If they'd showed Raiden in the marketing, no one would have been mad about it. It... actually was why I didn't play any other Metal Gear until way later giving 5 a try. And I was planning to mention the Escape from New York/LA easter egg, but ya beat me to it.

Feyd

I don't think genius is the word I'd use. Infuriating. It directly cost them sales on later games. I never bought 3 or 4 after that. I felt deceived and cheated.

Feyd

Raiden's a perfectly fine character, but the bait and switch with the marketing, demo, and first level all made it feel infuriating. This was the last game I played through in the series, and didn't buy any of them until MGS 5 many years after it launched and went on sale. The Arbiter wasn't the main point of contention in 2. I wasn't a big fan of playing as the Arbiter, but at least you could cheese whole sections of his gameplay by just camoing and running past everything. Halo 2's ending is what had me throwing my controller across the room.

Michael Fanning

It's called Metal Gear Solid Delta. And I think remakes are going to be in the works for the other two, it's just a matter of time. And apparently Konami remade 3 first as chronologically, it's the earliest. It's set in the 60's, during the height of the cold war. The story is fantastic, I like the story in MGS2 a lot but the one in 3 just beats it, for me.

PeppaShrekky

Not showing Raiden was an intentional decision for reasons that I won't discuss for spoilers

PeppaShrekky

They did MGS3 because 1. It's the first chronologically and 2. It's the most popular and well regarded out of the series so they played it safe and started with the one they knew people liked the most

PeppaShrekky

It's been 25 years, let it go

HillBillyPhilly

Kojima pulled an absolute banger with this one. All the Pre event information, trailers and media information was based on that first hour they managed to keep the Raiden gameplay a secret until launch and it completely fucked with people 😂

Jonas B

"Let it go...my son. Or should I call you brother?" sorry, with your profile pic I just had to lol

Selph

Money I guess, MGS1 & MGS2 sold more but they would have required way more work. MGS3 Delta is a lazy 1:1 remake, closer to a high budget remaster than anything else (and something is off visually). Truly a missed opportunity.

Feyd

Let what go? I'm not going to go back and buy the old games. No interest in trying to play them at this point. My point was that it was a bad business decision. A lesson companies today still having figured out.

PeppaShrekky

Fans would've crucified them if they did different

Selph

Maybe, maybe not. FFVII Remake & Rebirth did well (and even if I wasn't a fan of some of the changes they made, it's at least interesting). For instance, some bosses you meet along the way would be a lot better with a more fleshed-out background (same for the ones in MGS4), a la MGS1/2. The elephant in the room is that Kojima isn't there anymore, and they're unwilling to take any risks. Can't wait for PHYSINT. ;_;

Selph

Glad you're enjoying it! Making my workday fly by! :D Just for the record, they mentioned during Snake or Raiden's briefing intro that the US President (George Sears) resigned because of the Shadow Moses incident. The sitting President (James Johnson) is the one currently being held hostage.

Hyp3r-Tom

Hi Kai! Please be aware the remake is not Kojima's original vision. It attempts to be a 1:1 and it does a fantastic job, but it is also not a 1:1. Being new to the series I don't think you could go wrong either way as the remake does have everything the OG has so do whichever you're pulled towards most of course! Just wanting to give the FYI. The remake only came out a few months ago

Hyp3r-Tom

Selph, Lazy 1:1 is the perfect description of Delta! It's all there, but there are cracks in the polish. The original is still a better experience imo

Alan Stock

Yeah pretty much everyone hated playing as Raiden, especially as the demo/intro had you playing Snake. It was a crazy bold move from Kojima but pays off later. And the way Raiden is portrayed doesn't help, he's whiny, green and annoying and the stuff with Rose is terrible. Like Feyd says they maybe overdid it in marketing, but to be fair as a result it did have the intended shock value with the long-winded reveal that you aren't going to be playing as Snake when you get to the Big Shell. But its a game that in retrospect you can look back on with respect for what Kojima had the balls to do and the intention behind this decision.

Alan Stock

I'd say for covering MGS3 its fine to go with Delta, although I do prefer the PS3 visual 'fuzz' and the original character models. Might be a bit weird going back in graphics quality for MGS4 but other than that if you like your graphics then Delta should be fine. Up to Kai really.

Alan Stock

When you were talking about Vamp, I agree for me it was just a step too far into the unbelievable/silly territory even if it does get 'explained'. The posessed arm is legendarily stupid and immersion breaking too. I felt the same with Raven in MGS, for some reason I can accept Pyscho Mantis, but not a shaman guy vanishing on death with spiritual bird energy. Vamps kind of the same, its just a bit too much. But with Kojima you have to kind of expect this. I do find it funny how much crazy nonsense we can accept in his world building but certain things are just a bit much, like we also see in the Death Stranding games.

PeppaShrekky

Tbh MGS4 looks good anyway, especially good in the Master Collection. And the graphical quality will go down in Peacewalker anyway

Thom Lengyel Jr.

This is the series I subbed for. Defenitly looking forward to the ending of this one and the third game

ERIK

There are a ton of missable codec calls that don't really appear in these cut together cutscene videos you watch. A lot of the conversations tend to flesh out characters more, or include some funny interactions and callbacks to previous events in the series. If you ever play yourself, make sure to call every character multiple times on the codec in succession.

AgentRedShirt

From what I understand, the tanker mission was only a US thing. Like UK started on phase 2 or whatever. But yeah, it was like one of the biggest bait switches I’ve ever seen because everything was like snake is back. It’s so naturally I was excited for it. Now that the series is actually complete having a Raiden story actually makes sense but at the time? Oh boy.

Yogarine

The original MGS2 came with a Making Off DVD with gives a lot of great insights. When you finish watching this game you should check it out just to understand the full backstory behind why Kojima chose to have Raiden replace Snake as the main character, etc.: https://youtu.be/NkQC6sSK7HI
