Whatever is happening here, I want more of it please! These cutscenes are spellbinding, beautiful and chilling all at the same time.

I do however guys want to know a little about Silent Hill 1 without spoilers please. Resident Evil we started at the beginning. Silent Hill though had us starting here [2], why please? Should we not bother with 1?

Can’t wait for Part 2 as I want some answers and my bloody spider-senses are going off like a blower over James. Something is off here even though I love him.

Oh my the timing, guess who just got back home after buying sweets 😅 Can't wait to see what you think of this game :)

I haven't played Silent Hill so someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that it's because, unlike Resident Evil, the stories in each game are disconnected from each other. 2 is the most popular one + Silent Hill 1 is getting a remake soon too I think

Alita

Sadly no tin, this one is a pick and mix bag 😁

I’m grabbing some popcorn for this. I’ll edit this comment if I have any further input to add. I am a silent hill nerd and I can fill in some blanks for you cold callers The premise of Silent Hill is that it’s “curse” calls you to it and once you’re under its influence it will warp and shape reality and manifests monsters interpreted from your worst experiences, sins, traumas and internal darkness overall. Imagine the worst parts of you deep down turned into a physical entity and world. A personal hell made just for you ✨ Its not just yours too, anyone else trapped in the town may bring their nightmare mixed in with yours. A very obscure detail is that all the other characters you meet will be seeing their reality different from yours even if they're in the same room as you. Take a close look at Eddie for example. Aside from physical appearance, what details do you notice about him that he doesn't share with James? I'll reveal in the next part perhaps depending on how far along Kai is in the story. So two of the most iconic items most often used in Silent Hill is a form of radio and a flashlight. Not many people know this but there is a stealth element to this game. If you can pick your battles, you can get away without wasting resources. One can shut off the flashlight and the radio in order to become less visible to the monsters. The radio is an important feature because it’s your early warning system. Most monsters cause the radio to emit static within its proximity, but they can hear it too. Some monsters are exceptions and may only cause static if they’re blending in, like the mannequin monster or some monsters in other games can disguise themselves and the radio will not be able to tell until they’re revealed. Fog has been a staple feature in Silent Hill games since the first. And what's great is that the fog was originally just used to hide the town being rendered in around the player as they traveled around in outdoor environments. The eerie effect was a beautiful byproduct as a result. In some cases instead of fog, in a darker world, its just shadowed darkness obscuring the way ahead as you continued on. Creativity!

Oh yes! This is where my horror journey began as a kid and my first foray into console gaming. Its kind of hard to explain silent hill 1 without spoiling anything. Thankfully silent hill 2 is its own entity, you really dont need to know the first game for this one. Its when you get to 3 thats when your better off knowing 1. Silent hill 4 really has nothing to do with any of the other games, it was meant to be a different game, and was made silent hill 4 at the last minute. But silent hill 1 basically you searching for a family member in the town where it all goes to shit.. best I can do with spoiling it.

Silent Hill 2 is one of my favorite ps2 games right next to Midnight Club 2 and Vice City Stories so to see this get such a great remake made me so happy.

Kain D. Zero

To me SH2 is not the best Silent Hil game BUT since this is the only one that has a remake I am happy you cover this first. Also Silent Hill 2 is its own standalone story. Silent Hill 0-1 and 3 cover the same story. So after this you should cover 0, then 1 remake (hopefully it's ready soon) and then 3.

Kain D. Zero

Akira Yamaoka is an amazing musical artist. You will hear a lot of cool sounds and sounds effects in this game. Akira is a master of suspense and creepy sounds and voices.

Kain D. Zero

Better hold off. Silent Hill 0, 1 and 3 have the same story. Silent Hill 0 was made after 1 to be a prequel to it. Its other name is Silent Hill Origins.

Seyomint

The stories exist on the same plane but some are told at different times or even different realities from each other. There have been several occasions other characters have met each other or find hints of other characters’ presence previously. Silent Hill 2 is definitely the most popular. The first game is my own choice of most memorable.

Kain D. Zero

I will add that the town of Silent Hill is unique to each and every person who goes there. What James sees is not the same as what others see and vice versa. There are exceptions though

Alita

While it's debated what some of them represent, one thing you should know about Silent Hill is that every monster represent something related to the character, most of them to James directly, some the other NPC, some the city, so don't be afraid to speculate about what you think their design represents, it's part of what makes Silent Hill so great 😊

Seyomint

Silent Hill created an uncommonly used but long lasting joke that at any point somewhere experiences some fog, someone will definitely saying “It’s like Silent Hill out here” or the like. I am one of those people haha How can I play such a horrifying game? It’s not easy but just like James we have to see this journey through. But I promise I am ruining my pants enough to fill seven toilets as I go.

Fun fact about the origins of the fog in Silent Hill games: " 1. Technical Reason (Real World) • PlayStation 1 Hardware Limits: The original 1999 Silent Hill video game used dense fog to mask the limited draw distance of the original PlayStation hardware. Without it, the console would have struggled to render the entire town at once, causing buildings and streets to pop into view abruptly. • A Happy Accident: This technical workaround created an intense, claustrophobic atmosphere that became the iconic visual signature of the entire franchise"

Jake

This game is a masterpiece, And James Sunderland is one of the most well written characters in history. Every single thing in this game has a reason behind it. And I don't think you're ready for how deep and detailed this game really is.

Kain D. Zero

To me these kinds of games it's the thrill. I love being scared in a game. It's thrilling. It helps not believing in anything supernatural. I never get any traumas from games like these and I never get affected by horror games or horror movies. To me these are cool.

Kain D. Zero

Believe me, Kai. Watching this is much easier than playing.

Really glad you're checking this one out. Also small tidbit of information without really going into Silent Hill 1. The team behind the Silent Hill2 remake (Bloober Team) announced a while back that they're also working on a remake of the first Silent Hill. Overall Silent Hill 1 was an absolutely great game but it is now very much dated. Might be worth waiting on the remake here. Without going into any spoilers and being as vague as possible. Each Silent Hill game is it's own thing. The town of Silent Hill reappears and names of places and figures in notable history of the town will be mentioned but largely each game's protagonist has their own reason for being there. Every Silent Hill game after Silent Hill 4 was made by a different western studio. (Most of them are .... not great to put it mildly) Though I am pretty sure and please someone correct me if I am wrong. Akira Yamaoka the composer of the OST for the originally silent hill games usually helped out with the soundtrack for the western developed silent hill games as well. Silent Hill F was the first silent hill again developed by an eastern studio and also the first real silent hill game after the franchise was basically dead since Konami (the owner of the IP) pulled out of the gaming space to focus on their more profitable business ventures like pachinko machines in japan. I forget when exactly but all of a sudden a couple of years ago Konami announced a big Silent Hill event where they announced new silent hill projects which were: - A new silent hill movie by the director who made the first silent hill movie and was considered an okay experience. But better what you usually got from video game adaption at the time. - Silent Hill F - Silent Hill 2 Remake by bloober team - A weird silent hill interactive movie where people could buy votes to decide what happens next in the story and it was live streamed. It was an absolute mess and horrible. Also I am pretty sure it was received so poorly they scrapped the whole thing half way through. Or something along the lines. - Silent Hill Townfall which is another newer Silent hill game made by a studio in Scotland. Okay I might have weirdly jumped around here when writing this. I hope it is not too disjointed. If so sorry about that :P

Kain D. Zero

Since it's not explained in this game but is explained in Silent Hill 1: When you see rust you are in the otherworld/hell and when you see regular walls you are in the "regular" Silent Hill. It's still not a normal everyday world for you. If it was you wouldn't see any monsters.

Chris.N7

I hated playing this game, gave up after a couple of hours. The gameplay just sucks complete balls. Ended up watching the rest of the story on Youtube and it is great. The voice acting, facial animations, music, etc. are all top notch.

Kain D. Zero

Silent Hill is an old mining town. A cult lived there earlier and is talked about in other Silent Hill games . They worshipped a special god.

Kain D. Zero

Most of the monsters won't be explained in this game. There is one which will be clear later on in the game in your next videos.

Kain D. Zero

Yes. This game has many endings. All Silent Hill games do. At least those that I've played. Many have a few joke/comedy endings as well. You should watch them all after the actual story is done.

Kain D. Zero

There are Silent Hill live action movies but they are not very good. They do have a good atmosphere and get some things right. They never follow the plot of the games.

Kain D. Zero

Original Silent Hill 2 was very good and it nailed both the atmosphere and sounds and the story. I prefer the original because it looks better, the voice acting is also better and because it's faithful to the original.

Hey Kai I have been literally camping the Patreon so I could see this reaction because oh boy the game you got here its a true horror gem. To explain some things about this game itself. What youre saying about the monsters being manifestations, youre nailing it there, the monsters are connected to James subconscious, but its up to you to figure out how, and also you already gave yourself a clue about your other question: Why is Laura running around with all those monsters? I will let you think that one. Maria as a buddy doesnt do anything, doesnt help you with the monsters, doesnt collect items, etc, but she is a very important part of the gameplay mechanics and even to get the endings, because yes it has multiple endings and every Silent Hill game has them. And regarding if "they ever explain any of it" the easy answer is they dont. Silent Hill is the master of "show, dont tell", like that scene at the pub when James was seeing the glass of alcohol. The game puts the clues at plain sight, but its open for interpretation, only knowing there is some relation to James or the situation he is living right now. Now to explain a bit about some fun facts of the saga. They usually reccomend Silent Hill 2 because it is known as one of the best horror game of history and also because it has this recent remake. The reason why they havent reccomended so strongly Silent Hill 1 is mainly because it doesnt still have a remake, and it came out almost at the time of MGS1, so its an oldie, and also because each Silent Hill game has its own story, so the events that happen in this game dont come along at all in previous or next games, so you have "liberty" of jumping into any of them and not feeling like you missed something from previous ones. And another fact, since you like gorilla filmmaking so much, for Silent Hill 1 its also like exploring the town and has a very arcaic free roam, but at that time it was too much information for the console to manage loading the open zones, so a clever trick they used to do it and also to lift up the horror was using the fog as a way to mask the loading of the terrain without losing the flow or freezing. Since then, it has been its trademark for the IP. I have a lot more to say about the game, but you will need to get to part 2 for that. And a question that you should have in your mind with the characters of James, Angela and Eddie mores especifically is this: Why are they in Silent Hill? Im not talking about what are they looking for, but why did they end up there? Those answers will lead you very close to the truth of all

Fsaitza

And in case you noticed, this is one of my favorite games of all. Because it teached me the elegance and beauty of horror when they get sensitive themes in the mixtape and how it works so well. You get the horror but also the emotional part, and its a hook that you cant get out of your body until you have reached the ending. And I will tell you already, the last part of this game, its final act is what made this title achieve such historic praise even now. Something that will get burned in your mind the next time you see the tag "psychological horror"

ERIK

21:05 This is not for certain, but I've always taken the fog as a metaphor for how clouded(perhaps even distorted) one's mind can be. Heading in mindless directions, trying to piece things together and figure out just who/what you are.

So fun story, I had never played the original SH2 but I have played this Remake and even though I'm not big into horror I quite enjoyed it. The fun part of this story though is that when the game released, it was very foggy outside where I lived in the UK lol, It was indeed just like Silent Hill outside my window. And for some reason as I'm watching your reaction to this, it's very foggy like SH again outside right now.

The Leek

Kai, a fascinating aspect of most Silent Hill games is that your ending can be affected by your decisions/actions as a player. For instance, this game has 8 potential endings. Additionally, as someone already stated in the chat, for select characters, such as James, what he experiences while in Silent Hill is driven by his own trauma. As such, only James can see certain entities, including the lying figures and mannequins. No spoiler. You'll have to determine who or what is real lol
