I think the title says it all really but, I’m absolutely flabbergasted at how well this game tackles subjects and their secrets and turns them into art. Gaming art at that.

I do have questions for the lore masters so please help your boy out when I ask them in the video.

The first question I have for you to answer is what age were you when you first played this game and did the context of these subjects really make sense to you? Did it go over your head?

This only really applies to you if you played the game at a young age like we all did back in the day. Playing 15/18+ games when we weren’t supposed to. Different times people, different times.

Kai

P.S. Do we move on to Silent Hill 3 or is that it for this franchise?

Silent hill 2 remake was my first silent hill game. I love this game a lot because i’ve had my fair share of trauma and Silent Hill seems both off as a location but also pulls you in, i feel i want to go there because it’s a place that would call me over. The aspect of grief sorrow and other emotions, and whatever anyone went through, you somehow always connect to that franchise. It’s wonderfully done

Fun fact. The enemy type called "Lying figure". The original Silent Hill 2 had a documentary DVD which explained many things and the original inspiration for the enemy was as follows: "The idea for the monster in a straight-jacket hit me as I watched a programmer friend who works here. One day he came to see me. I saw him coming from a long way off. His hands were in his pockets close to his body, and he was wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. He was also listening to his walkman and walking in a cool way. That's how I got the idea for the monster."

Kain D. Zero

There are a lot of theories what each enemy type symbolize.

Chris.N7

Yeah the enemies are physical manifestations of their feelings and actions. Pyramid Head represents his guilt and subconscious desire for punishment because deep down he knows what he did. His own personal judge, jury and executioner. The legs in high heels represent his sexual frustration and lack of intimacy he felt with Mary. The Nurses are his anxiety/avoidance of the hospital, since he stopped visiting Mary. Maria is basically a version of Mary that James wished still existed, before the disease etc. The big bed (Abstract Daddy) at the Angela segment is part of her version of Silent Hill, representing the sexual abuse that she went through, bleeding into James'. She killed her dad and brother for what they did to her. You also see that when the room is on fire with Angela, because that's how she sees Silent Hill. Laura doesn't see any of the monsters etc. because she is innocent. To her it's just an normal quiet town.

Kain D. Zero

Angela's dad sexually abused her so Angela's father boss is a bed with two people on top of it in a missionary position with hands & legs coming from under the bed.

Glad you enjoyed this game as much as we did and see why it's considered the best entry in the series. Since you threw out some questions at the end I'll put down answers (most of it from memory so I am not fully sure it's 100% accurate). - Mary was killed a couple of days ago. She contracted the disease 3 years ago. So that is basically when she "died" in the mind of James. (If you check out the car at the beginning of the game you can see a body shape under a blanket on the back seat.) -In the original game it was assumed Mary's body was in the trunk of the car because James doesn't wanna open it in the original game. I think there is a specific text line ingame. - In the graveyard where you meet Angela there is a freshly dug up hole with a shovel. Most likely made by James to bury the body. -In the beginning when you're introduced to James you can see him kind of massaging the palm of his hand. He does the same in the cutscene after Killing Eddie. -The most glaring theme throughout the game for James is as you mentioned with Maria repressed sexuality. Because most likely he couldn't lay down with his wife anymore. So most of the monsters are women shaped. - Small fun facts in the original game. The body of pyramid head is James' character model. Same as the one who shot himself in the head in front of the tv back in the apartment building. Cementing the idea when it comes to Pyramid head that it's James punishing himself. - Every person in this game sees Silent Hill different. For Angela we know that everywhere she goes the world is burning around her. They each are confronted with their own Trauma and as you guessed correctly Laura just sees a normal town with no monsters in it. I am sure others have a lot more fun things to share. Also if anybody sees any mistakes I made in my info tid bits here let me know! Oh right the whole story with Angela and how hard it hits for people who were on the younger side when they played the game. I was around 16 when I played the original ps2 game. And honestly the whole Angela storyline hit the hardest at the time and the story conclusion for James was the one that confused me a bit. (I did get the ending you have seen in the videos) Only when I replayed the game 4 years later it made a whole lot more sense to me.

James killed Mary the night before coming to silent hill. He travelled there to bury her and in the bathroom at the beginning he suffers an episode which leads him to forget everything. you may also notice in the beginning the tan line where his wedding ring used to be, he had only just removed it. The same wedding ring can also be seen in a ''lost and found'' box at the club when you are with maria. Mary's body is in the backseat of the car from the very start of the game, you can actually use a free cam mod and see inside the car, you will find a body that has been covered in a sheet. Pyramid head was created in James' mind to punish him for his sins, when he finally faces the truth head on, he tells them he does not need them anymore. after a short battle they realise he is right hence them both ending themselves. Laura was just an innocent girl so she saw silent hill normally, no monsters or anything. there are 8 endings to this game you should check all of them out. One in particular is very emotional.

I even had to use tape for a few of my VHS's to fix them and I'll always remember what it felt like fixing cassette tapes that had the tape ripped out of them a long way. I always used a pen to roll the cassette back to its place.

Kain D. Zero

The pyramid head is basically supposed to be James punishing himself for what he did to Mary.

Kain D. Zero

The ending where Mary reads her letter to James always makes me teary-eyed

Kai, will you be reacting to Outlast or Outlast 2? It's amazing and one of the best iconic horror games ever

Kain D. Zero

Silent Hill 3 continues the story of Silent Hill 1 so the next game should be either Silent Hill 4 which is its own story as well or Silent Hill 1 where the main story started. Silent Hill 1 is getting a remake so might be best to wait for that or do Silent Hill 4. Just know this that SH4 is not on the same level as this game or SH1 and SH3 in terms of story telling. SH4 has very creepy enemies, a chilling atmoshpere and cool sound design.

Kain D. Zero

If you choose to wait for Silent Hill 1 remake there is another psychological horror game called "The Evil Within" which you can watch in the mean time. Shinji Mikami created that game and he is the one who also invented the original Resident Evil 1. The Evil Within is very claustrophobic and cool. It has unforgettable enemies like "The Keeper" and "The Sadist". One enemy boss might remind you of "The Grudge"

To answer one of your questions now without spoilers since you saw the game: James is the only one who sees the monsters that he sees. The reason why Maria sees the monsters is because Maria is also created by James and by the town of Silent Hill. So every monster James sees is his own creation from something in his past. Laura doesn't see or have any monsters because she doesn't have any demons in her past. It is implied that Eddie sees more regular people who represent his fear and memories of being bullied/picked on for being fat and Eddie kills many people like that in the game like the person James sees in the beginning when he first meets Eddie. In that sense if Konami wanted they could make endless sequels to Silent Hill by having different people go there who have different demons in their pasts to face.

Hey Kai so one of the loremasters here to add things about what others said already: At the start of the game, James suffers from PTSD, which acts in such a strong way that his mind blocks all memories relating to him killing Mary. And in fact the game starts just when that PTSD triggers with the memory loss and is the reason why he is so clueless about all. And the town the deeper you go, it gets closer to that one truth. But the brilliant thing here is that the ultimate truth wasnt that James killed Mary, it was that he killed her because of hate and not pity or mercy. Each character sees Silent Hill through their own lenses, so when they speak about monsters between each other you easily think that they are seeing the same things but they dont. James monsters are unique to James, and Eddie doesnt see those or Angela. Because of how close James came to be to both of them, he could briefly step into their worlds and see what they see, and they have distinctive looks. Angela saw fire everywhere because of how she felt, like her chest burning and her emotions all over the place. Eddie saw things like he was on a freezer because of his psychopatic tendency and cold blood killing at the end. And James sees everything rotten and worn out because of his relationship with Mary and how she looked like to James. And Laura didnt see nothing at all as you guessed right. Now something you might be interested in is how you get the endings, and that is one of the most genius things about this game, so attention here. From start to ending they never say or hint anything about how to get the endings, altough the majority are already available for you to obtain them. The way you achieve them is how you choose to play the game. It depends on how much health items James use in the playthrough, how much time or how many sittings do you need to get to the end of the game, and one of the most important factors: Maria. When Maria is your buddy, she doesnt help you with anything, she doesnt pick items, she doesnt beat monsters, etc, so you could consider her a good for nothing, but the game secretly judges you on how you treat her despite that. Leave Maria too far apart from you and let her get beaten up by monsters, you unlock one ending. Protect Maria and keep her close to you, you unlock another one. You also have some specific decisions to make to get them, but in general the game gives you your ending depending on how you play it, almost like judging you the player along with James. And the game you saw is one of the best ones in terms on how James goes. And Silent Hill 3 is the only one that is a continuation of another one, and in this case is the second part of Silent Hill 1. So I would reccomend you start with Silent Hill 1 or wait for the remake if that ever happens, or you can jump straight up to other Silent Hill games, like 4 for example, which they dont have relationship between them, plotwise I mean. And after all this time, Im glad you finally checked this game up and I hope you can see why for almost 2 decades it has been on the top 10 best horror games of all. Consider this game, the original, came in 2001, with this story and characters, and topics too. I will let that sink in your head a bit.

And I have to add, this game one of the best things that taught me, and I hope you leave with that too, is the power of the horror genre for certain stories. All these dark topics in another genre would be too shocking or even unbeareable, but in horror they fit perfectly. What better way to portray the struggle with a mental health problem than doing it in a horror setting? What better way to portray a trauma like Angela's and make you feel it than using horror? The only way to really empathize with the horrible things these people have gone through is in this kind of scenario. And thats what Silent Hill 2 taught me

This is certainly one of the better remakes in the industry, but I still have my gripes with it. For one, the original game is like... 6-7 hours long. Very well paced. The remake is like 13. Now that may not sound like a bad thing and you don't really see it in this movie, but all the extra time is just padding. Whereas you could get through some areas in the original in like an hour, they'll be like 3 hours here with no extra or meaningful story additions. It can get kinda dull and tiresome to actually play it. Another big thing to note is that the acting in the original game felt... off. Kinda hard to explain without you having seen it, but it almost permanently gives a feeling of "errrrhhhhh that's not how human beings interact or act". It gives off this very Lynchian, uneasy and almost dream-like feel to the whole thing, which I argue works way better for the story as opposed to this more "realistic/grounded" take. Other than that, I'm glad you checked it out, I'm glad you've liked it! It's certainly both a very influential game and a VERY well written story overall. (And yes, you're right. The monsters being sexualized are intentional as they're mean to show the guilt and the sexual frustration James feels.

I would love to see your reaction to the other endings of silent hill 2! The “leave” ending (the one in the video) is most commonly referred to as the ‘true’ ending, but the others definitely have their merits!

Knoh One

Fun stuff other people have mentioned but everyone has a version of silent Hill and James interacts with the others sometimes, a little detail you noticed a bit sometimes is Eddie's breath, his silent hill is implied to be cold like the meat locker you fight him in and in earlier cutscenes you can usually see his breath

I’m pretty impressed how many of the psychological references you picked up on there are in the game. This is a very common theme across the Silent Hill games. You’re very good Kai! I’ll continue dropping info in this comment over time as I watch! Honestly the comments broke down plenty already so I’ll explain the role of Pyramid Head (yes that is his name) That is the great Tormentor. James committed a grave act of sin and believed at his core he deserves to be punished for what he did to his beloved Mary. Pyramid Head is a manifestation of his need for punishment. And so the monster constantly pursues, antagonizes, harasses and inflicts pain on James. And when he finally understands the purpose of his suffering he finally learns the lesson and in the end Pyramid Head is no longer needed. Which is why in the end his tormentor offs himself in the final duel. At that point James is ready to accept his fate and face himself and his sins. Pyramid head has made returns in later games but not exactly following the same role but as a guardian and executioner for or against other characters. There are also other monsters created for the same purpose as James’ Pyramid Head but take a different form/design carved after a different person’s psyche. Then there is Maria. This one is an enigma to me as someone who has studied the lore and reason for monsters across the Silent Hill games. Maria doesn’t appear to be a real person but a manifestation of one. Obviously she becomes a grotesque monster in the end but there’s something other to it. In the OG Silent Hill 2 there is a playable side story where one plays as Maria before she meets James. It’s not fully clear where she comes from or why she is there but the speculations are, Silent Hill created Maria as a form of torment for James. Maria is everything James subconsciously wanted from Mary. Or the image of what he wanted. Alive, vibrant, romantic, affectionate (in all manners) as opposed to the sickly individual Maria was reduced to (in James eyes at the time) and with Maria she was to be harmed and threatened causing James grief to see the spitting image of his wife be brutalized mercilessly as a reminder of what he did to Mary. The other speculation was that she was Born from a Wish, which was the title of that side story mentioned earlier I believe. It’s also speculated, in her last moments Mary wished she could be the wife James deserved instead of being an ill wife on the death bed. And through the strange power of Silent Hill’s manifestation, that wish was delivered as Maria. It also explains why Maria was very attached not just to James but to Laura as well despite not knowing why herself. For me I think it’s a bit of both. Silent Hill manifested Mary’s last wish but at the cost of punishing James. There is a thing when it comes to Silent Hill. This town draws people to it. Bringing up their bad history to challenge them to look at themselves in a twisted distorted mirror and face that darkness. There is a lesson to be learned, and those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This is an ending for James too. One ending is that the cycle is hinted to repeat as James leaves Silent Hill with Maria and toward the end of it, Maria seems to show the same symptoms Mary had. Thus repeating the cycle. To add to this, many of the corpses James comes across in the games, they appear to be James himself and this alludes to the bodies being past iterations of James failing his role in Silent Hill, repeating his journey until he reaches the end. In other Silent Hill games, there are some characters seemingly trapped in the town because they fail to understand the reason they are trapped there.

Nip/Tuck became surprisingly brutal in the end with the serial killer. Of course the organ selling crime boss was cruel as well. The actor was amazing.

My mother has been saying she is gonna die and that she wants to die for over two years now. She has medication to her depression but she still has these talks almost every time I talk to her or go to visit her. I don't visit her daily, I do it once a week. She lives in a nursing home and there are other people of her age. She is very social so of course one reason for her depression is that the other occupants are not mentally there much anymore. She does talk to the nurses a lot and gets visits from others.

I am so happy you got to see this game. Thank you for watching and for giving your take and insights on it.

I'd suggest giving the new silent hill, Townfall a shot, I enjoyed it quite a lot and it's disconnected from the rest much like F and 2, 2 is the only game of the new ones that actually takes place in silent hill itself unfortunately lol. Then I believe you should wait for the silent hill 1 remake

SH2 definitely hit differently for me as an adult as it did when I was freshly 18 playing the original game. Some very few things went over my head; others hit like the proverbial truck. But I've had some life experiences now that make it all slam home in a way it didn't before. I'd say at least read up on Silent Hill before diving into SH3 because it's very much connected.
