Yew twalkin ta me? 😉 Btw, Todd Philip's joker owes a lot of its vibes/themes to this movie and another one called " king of comedy"

Daryl 👽

Omg. I cannot wait to see one later tonight!!!! Love me more Scorsese films!!!

Henry N.

Scorsese’s greatest film

CrashTestWalrus

With this upload and the two Top Guns on Asian Angels that's a good weekend for me. Thank you girls, and have a great weekend as well!

lee eames

There was some great movies in the 70's. You should try 'one flew over the cuckoo's nest'. It's a real heart breaker.

Duncan

Oh, wow. This is a Sunday, then! Powerful movie, Munchies. Can’t wait to see what you think about it 😮

Duncan

Munchies can you believe this is Vito from Godfather Part 2? 🙂👊🏻

Henry N.

I think they'd really like one flew over

Duncan

Yes, that really is good.

Duncan

Raging Bull is turning up at some point. They’re surely building up to that 😂

Duncan

I respectfully disagree 🙂 Probably The King Of Comedy. Or Raging Bull.

NastyButler122

Chi’s reaction to the end is interesting mainly because she’s usually the first to call for bloodshed against the villains… maybe if Travis was played by Chris Evans she wouldn’t feel so conflicted lol 😜

Duncan

Notice the way the saturation suddenly drops on the final bit? It would have been far too red for it to get past an X rating!

Pinitchio

The guy has mental illness which makes him unstable. He's not just an 'incel'.

Duncan

Agreed. Travis is definitely on some sort of autistic spectrum, though.

Duncan

‘Incel’ is a very lazy and idiotic analysis.

Henry N.

What do you mean by incel? The film is about the pathology of extreme isolation, and how the conditions of isolation and alienation manifest in dangerous, violent ways. Yes, Bickle is mentally ill, but his environment exacerbates his descent into violent fantasy. I live in Manhattan, and though the city has changed in many ways since the 70s, there's a reason Scorsese says in interviews so many people can relate to Bickle, especially in the today-era of technology. From what I understand Incel's feel strong anger and contempt for women. Bickel on the other hand tries to become a young women's savior. The moral ambiguity of his final action is part of what makes the film so complex.

Pinitchio

Movie Munchies, Travis wasn't a 'normal' person and his behavior wasn't normal . He had mental illness which made him unstable (and potentially dangerous). He wasn't a hero or villain.

Duncan

Absolutely, and in bits, agree. Travis (in this), is an uneducated lost soul. Completely lost in a place that he hasn’t any understanding of. So he is a little bit frustrated. Do I accept what he then did? No. Do I understand it? …… Travis just needs a cuddle. Nobody did that. Watch that bit when he’s at the cab rank (“I just want to do something…..”). That’s quite sad.

Duncan

Always funny for a Londoner to connect with a New Yorker, anyway 👍🏻

Duncan

Fantastic! Educate me about the incel then culture, please! (Disclaimer, I do read).

Matt S

Some people think that the ending is the dying fantasy of Travis. He likes to imagine he will be seen as a hero who saved Iris's life.

Steven

I think Hella summed this movie up great and that Travis is somewhere between a hero and a psycho. If he would have been successful in killing the politician, society would have viewed him as a monster, but since he did violence in an underground brothel and rescued a girl from captivity, society views that same guy as a hero. Since we've been following Travis, we know he's far from a hero. He's a guy who has violent fantasies. It's so weird that he takes Betsy to see a porno on their first real date. Everyone knows you save porn for the third date. Just kidding, Just kidding. As this movie was set in 1973, he could have taken her to see The Exorcist. Also, not a great date movie, but better than porn. Also, the movie establishes that Travis was a marine who got out of the army in 1973. It's highly likely he was in the Vietnam war and suffering from PTSD. Like you did, I feel the ending is ambiguous. I'm not sure if society really views Travis as a hero and he's back driving a cab, or if the end of the movie is Travis's fantasy as he dies from his wounds.

Duncan

Still waiting for my education……

Duncan

Well done 👍🏻

Duncan

Would you generally accept or disagree that Travis Bickle’s actions would compare with Raskolnikov’s? (This is a reference to a book, W).

Duncan

Great commenting, as always. The ending is totally ambiguous. You’re just left to guess whether it really did work out. (for me, it didn’t - the end bit is some sort of dream that Travis is having).

Steven

Right! It's too perfect.

Duncan

Perfectly ambiguous 👍🏻

Alex Anderson

Wow, didn't expect this one. This will be fun.

fan

I don’t think Travis really had a true purpose of reason to try and kill the presidential Candidate. He just went crazy from isolation, mental illness, and his observations of his community didn’t help. But I think Travis justified wanting to kill the candidate, after his interaction with him. In the taxi, Travis expressed how upset he was with the crime and bad people in his town, and the politician was basically “um yeah anyways…” and I think he was upset the candidate didn’t enthusiastically share the same sentiment at wanting to clean up the city. I think he had extreme reactions to everything because of mental health issues

Duncan

It’s just not ‘cricket’ to edit one’s comments after criticism.

Snick

This is how movies need to be made. Realistic and authentic . True reflection of society.

Duncan

We need Munchies to do 2001 just to completely mess everything up 😂

Grumpy Monk

I love to see young Robert Deniro. He's had an incredible acting career. He even has a new movie coming out this year "The Alto Knights".

Duncan

Agh, you’re alright, W. Quite the challenge.

Duncan

I heard about that. Maybe. Mean Streets. That’s a good one.

Alex Anderson

I miss the days when Chi would acknowledge the director before watching the movie. Though I'm sure at this point they realize they're watching Martin Scorcese movies. BTW, that was Scorcese in the back of the taxi talking about wanting to kill his wife. Also, this and King of Comedy influenced the movie Joker. Hopefully you'll get to watch that one, no one has reacted to it as far as I know. As far as the ending to this one goes, I personally think it was all just his fantasy of what he wanted to happen.

Alec Dacyczyn

He wasn't a hero. But the cops didn't know that he went there with the intent to murder the three pimps. He could easily have made up a plausible story in which about them attacking a poor innocent cab driver. And because they knew the three people he killed were criminals they might not have cared to investigate it very deeply.

Duncan

That’s an interesting discussion. At what point did his fantasy start? Was it after the police arrived? Or was it after he fled the attempt on Palantine? I’m sure the former is a certainty, but there’s a case for the latter, too.

Piranther

I don't know how many times I've said to friends, "You talking to me? You must me talking to me 'cause I'm the only one here!!"

Duncan

Often, the Munchies pull unintentional comedy out of unexpected places, and yet they absolutely surpassed themselves here…. "I thought killing is wrong but maybe back in time it's ok to kill?" "No. It's not ok to kill." Genuinely hilarious!

Ty

Travis's view of love is twisted.. easy and ready made physical stuff made him idealize relationships unrealistically, leading to weird notions of courtship and contradictory moralizing. He's more about a broken idea of love than just being "incel" since sex is available literally everywhere and anywhere. He's a walking contradiction who doesn't get real connection! Fun film though

TippedDuke

I thought so too. Hella had some pretty funny responses to Chi's comments.

Jay Wolfe

I remember living in New York Spanish Harlem. During this time when I was a child I can always tell we're getting close to my house by how many burning cars were on the side of road. People forget how New York used to be it was really rough.. it's not like this today. I remember things started to change when we start to see the Guardian Angels and of course more police with the broken glass initiative. But I witnessed the guardian angels would find prostitution houses and clean them up get everybody out. https://withoutabadge.nycitynewsservice.com/2015/05/11/three-decades-after-forming-the-guardian-angels-continue-to-be-a-presence-for-new-york-city/

Daryl 👽

Omg omg omg you watched The Departed. 😍😍😍 one of my favorite Scorsese film

Duncan

The Guardian Angels were a sign that a city has lost control of itself in the 1970s. Imagine a city reliant on that sort of charity! Something had gone wrong.

Jay Wolfe

Absolutely right! But that's when you start to notice a change. Community watch groups put the emphasis to report crime

Duncan

Actually, I respectfully agree.

Eric Muirhead

The ending is kind of supposed to leave you feeling confused. You want to view him as a hero because he saved Iris, but he is also a dangerous psychopath and only sees solutions through violence. It's hard to reconcile these two concepts into one person. The reason the public sees him as a hero is because they are so fed up with the corruption and crime that they too are willing to view violent reaction as a solution because government has failed at making things better. They are desperate for action. This movie gets better the more you think about it.

Duncan

This is near perfect analysis 🙂

Alex Anderson

Honestly I always thought he died after the shootout. But you can't reallly tell if he died or not. He gets grazed in the neck or something right? When he pointed the finger gun at his head I always felt like he died after that. Then what comes after is basically his fantasy... he gets to be the hero and gets the girl back. If he survived the shootout wouldn't he still get charged with murder? Even though the guys he killed were bad guys vigilante justice isn't legal. Yet we get this version of reality where he's roaming free and everyone admires him. Just never seemed real to me.

CS

tbh, I don't totally understand the ending either. I believe the public would think he's a hero for killing bad people - that's normal - but he would still be in prison. Not just back to driving a taxi like nothing happened.

Dav Cald

The pimps are dead and Travis is knocked out. The only story the police can go by is what Iris tells them, so if she says he was trying to rescue her, why would he be in prison?

Truss

Hi Chi & Hella, First off, I am glad to see you ladies "got back on the horse!" The ending was solid "irony" meaning he stalked her first, (in their relationship) and she dumped his "porno" ass. But then after learning of his true nature she was compelled to stalk him back with romantic interest. - Only a REAL man would give her a taste of that rejection, if any true romance would blossom in their future. - "Anytime, anywhere."

Riful

Can you watch Ghostbusters 1984? :)

Jerry Kern

The guy that was in the cab that wanted to shoot his wife is the director of the movie. Martin Scorsese. He also directed Casino and Goodfellas

tommy23

I'm sorry someone recommended this to you. I don't watch movies that make me feel bad. I'm going to skip this one. Keep on rockin

david mueller

Thank you for selecting this movie and commenting through your frustration to understand it It is not an easy one. There is a huge back story that you young women are missing. Also you are also perhaps too young to fully comprehend how the Vietnam War changed reasonable sensitive intelligent people. Travis may have murdered people in the War. To justify those murders he wants the morally pure world he faught for. Don't get me wrong, you are very capable of understanding the movie but perhaps too far from that time and the way these men were used by our government. He judges people the way our government taught him to judge the enemy. You judge him the way society judges murders. Plus the police may have just used him and his killings to send a signal to the street.

Brandon

They don't have to rely only on what Iris tells them. His prints would be on several illegal guns, he killed multiple people in different parts of the building, and his actions do show premeditation. Self-defense would be the only argument I can think could fly, but that doesn't really add up with the totality of the situation. It's possible a jury could side with him I suppose.

RichieBIV

You two were so confused at the end, you confused me.😕😬

Omon Sisaphus

A similar, and I think much better, version of this type of movie that I'd recommend is Falling Down from 1993. I'm sorry but as a film buff, and I'm probably gonna get crucified for saying this...I've always found Taxi Driver to be profoundly overrated.
