Watch Platoon for another anti-war movie about Vietnam

"Points" refers to the score in 'points' toward going home. Long service, more points, short time, fewer points. Wounds, specific hard campaigns and battles, medals, etc, would gain you points. When you reached a certain score in points, you gained priority for going home. Certain people were told that they wouldn't be going home soon, but rather to prepare to transfer to the Pacific Theater to fight Japan. Paratroopers in particular were told to expect that duty, but the Japanese surrendered before most of those transfers were made.

The film that some soldiers were watching showed the fight for Okinawa, which is where the battle of Hacksaw Ridge took place. The fear was that the Allies would have to invade the Japanese home islands, and that the war there would be like Okinawa times 1000. I think that the atom bombs and the fire bombing of Tokyo (often forgotten that it killed more than Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined) were justified in both Ally and JAPANESE lives saved.

About the man shot while running away. Prisoners at one of the extermination camps said that he was one of the men in charge at the camp. Liebgott was Jewish, and took it personally. The soldiers went there under orders to 'arrest' him. Liebgott was left alone in the cabin with the German, and would probably have said that the German had tried to escape (the first shot), which might have been true, since he was only wounded. Once he tried to run away it was legal under the Laws of War to shoot him. Many prisoners on all sides were shot trying to escape.

I'm sorry that I feel compelled to explain things, but most Americans know very little history. I don't know how good the schools are in your country, but American schools are pretty bad. A person has to educate themselves if they want to know very much. I'm (almost) old, and retired, and read a lot. Thank you for reacting to BoB.

Please watch The Pacific as well. It's the spiritual successor to Band of Brothers, but focusses on the war against Japan.

They already wached them, but We Were Soldiers and Hacksaw Ridge hits closer to BOB than Platoon. Platoon is in a league of its own and requires a lot of nuance to understand it. Most of the men who went to Vietnam were drafted, they could go to Prison or Vietnam. They went to Vietnam as an occupying force with most men just hoping to survive. I hope you girls continue to educate yourselves and review movies. All the best
