R.I.P. Lee Pitman (2001-2025)

Great reaction, ladies. The film is set in a future where a fascist totalitarian regime has subjugated the UK. The only part of the movie that is factual is the part about Guy Fawkes. Fawkes was part of a Catholic group that planned to assassinate Protestant King James and replace him with his daughter. It was known as The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 and the plan was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament on 5 November 1605, killing the King and bringing about a regime change after decades of religious persecution. The plot failed and Fawkes was hanged for treason. V was played by Hugo Weaving who also played Tom Doss (father of Desmond Doss) in Hacksaw Ridge (2016) and Agent Smith in The Matrix Trilogy (1999 – 2003). High Chancellor Adam Sutler was played by John Hurt. John played Kane in Alien (1979).

The bit at the start really happened. Guy Fawkes was a real person who in 1605 tried to blow up the Parliament building with barrels of gunpowder. But he was caught before he could set them off. Ever since November 5th has been a holiday in Britain. Lots of fireworks. "Remember, Remember the 5th of November..." is the start of very, very will known a poem about it. The rest of this movie is set in a fictional timeline in which a Nazi-like fascist group took over Britain by creating and releasing the deadly virus. NOT real history. In this movie the government is bad and V is... not so much a "good guy", more of an "anti-hero". He was working to destroy the bad government.

V for Vendetta is a British graphic novel created in 1982 by anarchist writer Alan Moore. The story depicts a near-future history version of the United Kingdom, after a nuclear war in the 1980s devastated most of the rest of the world. The neo-fascist fictional Norsefire political party has exterminated its opponents in concentration camps, and rules the country as a police state.

Your reactions on this movie were the best yet, I think. I particularly enjoyed your reactions at the very beginning where V is speaking in riddles and using a lot of alliteration and complicated words - don't feel too bad about not understanding - most native English speakers find it difficult to follow too, because the words he uses are very rarely used in everyday speech.

Anarchism is a political theory and an anti-capitalist political movement that puts forward the idea that authoritarian systems in the workplace and in government are inherently corrupt, and that society would be healthier if a system could be put into place that allowed people to cooperate using non-hierarchical systems of administration, meaning that people work cooperatively for the benefit of all, rather than subordinate to owners, corporations, or a state. Anarchist systems of administration have existed as "governments" in the past in places like Catalonia (Spain) in the late 1930s, and they exist today in some areas of northeast Syria (Rojava), in the Zapatista Autonomous communes of Chiapas, Mexico, and a few other places. In the movie, V is not really an anarchist, as he is too much driven by revenge to adhere to any meaningful political theory. He wants to tear down the fascist regime and he hopes that the people will build a more egalitarian political structure in its place, but he realizes that this must come from the people, and not be imposed by any one person (i.e. him). This is why he asks Evey (who, in his mind, represents the people) to blow up parliament. If you want to see more anarchist movies, you might watch "Land and Freedom" directed by Ken Loach, "Reds" directed by Warren Beatty, and "A Fistful of Dynamite" directed by Sergio Leone. Also, "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (which you have already watched) has some anarchist ideas (anarcho-syndicalism) in it.

Just because someone carries a badge doesn't mean they are good. Just because someone wears a mask, doesn't mean they are bad. " None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

The juxtapose casting of John Hurt here as the High Chancellor compared to his Winston Smith character on the other end of the spectrum (in Nineteen Eighty-Four) is really a nice touch.

S_Vive

Perhaps when it came out, yeah a bit... but now in the wake of all the COVID questionability, I'm not so sure.

S_Vive

Yeah, we do tend to get desensitized to violence a bit —at least temporarily— when watching so much of it via movie depictions... but I think the compassionate nature that you two commonly portray will still remain intact.

S_Vive

Mr. Finch (Det. Inspector actually) is played by one of my favorite actors (though I've seen him in few roles), Stephen Rea. You both will likely be as impressed by his acting skill as I have been when you eventually watch Citizen X.

"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people." Quite possibly the best assemblage of words in the entire movie. Such a succinct statement of what we've all lost in these modern times... if indeed we ever really once had it.

S_Vive

The device Finch places/activates on his office desk is not a recorder, but rather is to block any recording of his conversations that the government is likely attempting to regularly accomplish.

S_Vive

One can believe in the possibility, even probability, that one's government is becoming or has become what was portrayed in this film... and still absolutely stand against employing violent means/actions against others. It is good that you have no consensus of views & emotions at the end of watching a movie like this... as this mirrors the complexity of related issues in life, and a unity of feeling towards the film would be too much of the convenience of fiction.

Larry Anderson

People around the world often don’t understand why america allows its citizens to own guns and why it’s protected in our constitution. This message is why. When a government takes the freedom of speech, peaceful demonstration and freedom from it’s people, the people need to rise against its government. Otherwise you end up being oppressed like North Korea, Russia or China. Personal liberty and freedom under the rule of law belongs to all people. I think the film was trying to convey the message that freedom is worth fighting for and governments cannot be allowed to oppress its people. That’s just my understanding.

Lee

You just like to play with guns.

Chris

You can own guns in Russia it’s easier to get guns even fully autos there then in most Western European countries Russia is not as bad as the media makes it sound look at the UK they pretty much restrict you to shot guns and bolt guns and good luck useing it in self defense that’s after getting a extremely hard licence and “ proving you need it “ self defense is not a reason In Russia anyone can get a short barrel shot gun for self defense and with a permit you can own up to 10 other guns even full auto AKs Hell look at what happened recently a man was put in prison for making stickers there are worse places then Russia it certainly isn’t North Korea or China

CS

Yeah, not even close bud. The movie is about standing up against the political leaders that weaponize the media to push propaganda that engages citizens' fear and paranoia so that they can distract and brainwash them while they engage in corruption and self-serving decisions behind the scenes. The irony is that Chancellor Sutler and Creedy are almost exact replicas of political leaders and media that you probably deify. I guess everybody is the rebel hero in their own story.

Saints_Madness

Well said, but I don't play with guns, those that live by the sword will die by the sword.

Saints_Madness

27. Lol the government has always had hidden agendas that are not known to anyone else. The control of our food, the fear they spread on the news, all to keep everyone living in fear. Remember when they shamed everyone one on the news broadcast to get the vaccines? Just a little example but then we have the chip implementation that is supposed to happen and if you don't fall in line, you will be placed into one of those camps. Oh yes, things will get worse, especially at the doorstep of WW3. And why you got to use the Lords name in vain? Women shouldn't cuss, its not very lady like.

Grumpy Monk

This movie reminds me of Blade Runner 2049. You might like it.

Jonah Engebretsen

Not sure how accurate the chip thing is. It is a speculation at best. Things won't necessarily "get worse". There is no such thing as the "good old days". Opportunists and human nature have always existed. Likewise, so has empathy, compassion, love, and a drive for justice. In fact, life today is overwhelmingly better than where it was 100 or 200 years ago (for most of the world); even in a 3rd world country. That isn't to say there aren't modern problems that are specific to our current times; and this is of course based on humanity as a collective, not taking into account all of the nuanced, individual struggles one may battle. Perhaps your fears over being "on the doorstep to WW3" are also a fear folks want you to believe, no? Also, they can cuss if they'd like. I'm not their priest. The way they speak is between themselves and God. Not that cussing even makes one less of a woman somehow. Just my opinion.

Smiley

Thank you, the OP has such a brainwashed opinion. What good is a gun against a weaponized form of information control and oh yeah, the government also has planes, tanks, high explosives, drones, nukes...

Matthew Lewis

In the beginning of the movie where V quotes Hamlet saying "we are oft to blame in this, 'tis too much proved that with devotion's visage and pious action we do sugar or the devil himself", he's addressing their hypocrisy, as they are clearly barbaric criminals hiding behind badges.

BluePanda

As always, I love the random jumps to conclusion - sometimes they're right, but a lot of amusing ones that don't really make sense. Thinking various people were Evey's mom/dad, thinking various people were V, etc. Great reactions!
