I would note that during the intro to the Band of Brothers episode, the guys who were THERE were making comments about how they could have potentially been best buds with the guys on the other side. They were people... who admittedly were doubling down supporting fascism, but since that ideology relies on folks embracing groupthink and following a strongman who offers easy answers on impossibly complex questions, while indefensible, it is at least a relate-able human condition. Having empathy for other human beings - even when they are making utterly horrible decisions, is not something you should need to apologize for, IMHO... you are merely acknowledging them as human beings.
