Ghuyu

The Creeping Back

Ghuyu is a Sokatra, a humanoid turtle, and the only known person to have survived a Nerveburrow infestation with his mind intact. These parasitic insects typically take control of their host's brain, flooding it with endorphins to keep it docile while using its body as a nest and breeding ground. How Ghuyu managed to resist their control remains unknown. He was not entirely unaffected, however, as the infestation left him in a constant state of bliss and robbed him of much of his judgment. Rather than seek a cure, he welcomed the insects, allowing their colony to spread across his body and turn his shell into a massive, living hive.

Having grown dependent on the substance produced by the Nerveburrow, Ghuyu became convinced that others should experience the same happiness. He began experimenting with the insects' secretions, eventually developing Happy, a highly addictive drug that reproduces their effects. His trade grew from a small operation into Green Garden, a cartel now active throughout Tierra and several vassal territories of Azalis. The organization produces Happy and several related drugs, often using otherwise legitimate alchemical shops and taverns to conceal its distribution network.

Ghuyu is an unusually cheerful fellow, often appearing distracted and seldom seen without a smile. Yet the infestation seems to have left him incapable of guilt or remorse, even when committing acts of terrible cruelty. He sees the world as a place burdened by needless misery and sincerely believes his drugs offer a solution. In his mind, he is doing people a kindness, and those who stand in his way are simply denying others the happiness they deserve.
