The Thorfinn we see this episode is called "Bug Eyes". He is a slave Leif freed while searching for our Thorfinn. He did that because they look basically identical and share the same name. Bug Eyes isnt tricking Leif. Leif is well aware that Bug Eyes isnt the Thorfinn he was looking for but he still has a father/son dynamic with Bug Eyes. Leif is still looking for our Thorfinn. Hope that this clarifies some of it, its a little confusing.
