Knut doesn't want to protect the Vikings. He wants to use the Vikings to build paradise on Earth, thereby defying "God's logic". Hence he wants as many of the Vikings on his side, so he can control them and create a world where war and bloodshed are not needed (=paradise). If he needs to "break a few eggs" to achieve that, it's an acceptable sacrifice.
