Heya Fluff! As a resident space and astrophysics nerd, I have a few questions about how the FTL travel works in your setting. First of all, do the characters in setting experience time during traversal, or is it more of an instant teleportation thing? Next, can one gate connect to multiple destinations, or does there have to be a pair of gates for every connected system? Are the gates some sort of portal to another dimension I.E: A dimension where space is more compressed and as such allows for FTL travel, or is this more of a quantum teleportation thing? Are there any ships that have the capability of traveling faster than light without the use of a gate (Massive capital ships, etc)? What would happen if one of the gates were to be turned off while a ship was in transit? Would they be stuck forever in-between gates, would the ship be split between the section that has already arrived and the section that is yet to enter the gate? You mentioned previously that you were basing your FTL terminology off of sewing, so are we talking ripping a hole in the fabric of spacetime to bridge between two points? If so, would there be any large ramifications? (Think the star trek episode where they banned ships from traveling at super fast warp speeds because the constant FTL travel was destabilizing the fabric of spacetime in the Alpha Quadrant) Those gates are absolutely massive as well, how long would you say it takes to establish a gate in a newly colonized system? Additionally, if gates are the only way to travel faster than light, how were the systems colonized in the first place? Is there some sort of cryogenic freezing/generation ship and extreme travel time stuff going on here? Thanks, and sorry if there are too many questions lol.

iirc, Fluff said the FTL travel was using the Interstellar-like passage through wormholes between two gates, where the gates were set up one at a time at increasing distances to create interstellar "routes". I'll let him explain it, but that was the gist of it. If there are ramifications to FTL travel, that may occur within the comic storyline.

So each "hypergate," in this case, is an entrance gate to an artificial(?) wormhole and the exit point is from another hypergate in a different point of space on the other side of said wormhole. The gates are large enough for ships to travel from one point in space to another in a short amount of time (but not zero).
