Henry L. (Dick) Thompson, Ph.D., is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and legendary MACV-SOG operator known by the codename "Dynamite." Serving as a recon team leader from 1968 to 1970, he led over 20 high-risk black operations deep into enemy territory in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam during the Vietnam War's secret campaigns, earning a reputation for bravery in brutal firefights and hand-to-hand combat.

After 21 years of military service, including roles in Special Forces, Airborne, and Ranger units, Thompson founded High Performing Systems, Inc. in 1984, where he serves as President and CEO, providing leadership solutions, training, and assessments for corporate, military, law enforcement, and firefighters in high-stress decision-making. A psychologist, Mensa member, and Ironman triathlete, he authored, among other books, the bestselling "SOG Codename Dynamite" series, including "A MACV-SOG 1-0's Personal Journal" (2023), sharing firsthand accounts of combat psychology and spiritual warfare.

Thompson advocates for mental resilience, veteran support, and applying combat lessons to everyday leadership.

I almost fell off my seat, when Shawn said the psych test must’ve been different back then LMFAO. This is great

Jose Ochoa

His book is great, these boys during Vietnam, volunteered to go to hell and back. And most likely never to come back, they were the founders of black ops.

Dewyaw

LFG! This is the dude I wanted Shawn to interview most…just behind Elon

Orangutan Papé

This interview is boutta be amazing. Dick is an absolute bad ass 🫡🇺🇸🦅

Ya'aqov

It is horrible the way my parents’ generation treated the heroes returning home from Vietnam. It is disgraceful. My father-in-law changed out of his uniform as soon as he landed in the States because of fear of being attacked. The generation of Vietnam vets is rapidly passing, and I thank you all for your service!

Jacob Hanks

Dang, not many people know where Wahalla, SC, is. It's a shame I grew up around that area and never heard of Mr. Thompson. I'm going to buy his book today.

Ronnie Tschan

The secret to not ending your life is to find out what God put you on this planet for and what you need to believe in order to get off of this planet "alive". Find out what purpose God has for you through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior...Its the secret to life on this planet...

Cameron

There have been so many incredible individuals on this show, but these bad a$$ vets are by far my favorites! Great interview Shawn! Keep it up

Maria

Wow, this is why I signed up for SRS. Thank you Sean, these stories are phenomenal. Rob O'Neil, DJ Shipley, Henry Thompson are the best podcasts I've watched, and that includes all of Tucker Carlson's!!!

K. Swaringen

Wow, the name Dynamite really fits this soldier. Amazing story from a MACV-SOG hero that lived to tell about. Thanks Shawn for having Thompson share this part of history. !

Christy G.

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode, what an absolute LEGEND! Not a surprise (but an absolute disgrace) that this man came home to the Gov’t lying to Americans about the war and people spitting in his face. He earned and deserves a “welcome home, thank you for all you did!” 🙏🙏🙏🙏

Maria

Ok, so you need a campfire/shooting range with John Thompson, DJ Shipley and Rob O'Neil - those would be amazing stories....

Nicoli7153

One of your best Shawn! You and your team do great work!!!!

Matt

Fantastic interview. One bad ass mother f’r! Great humility and wisdom. After all he’s done and been through. Continued to do. I have a lot of respect and I appreciate this man. Thank you.

Gary Cox

Absolute perfect choice to be the last interview in the old studio before moving on to your new one. I'd like to hear you were able to make range get together happen very soon. Shawn, Dick Thompson's story needed to be documented so thank you for doing so. Thank you both for your service and may God Bless you both.

Tim

Thanks for bringing back the veterans

Tim Crews

I can't imagine sitting in that room in the presence of such greatness and valor. He is a national treasure

sdixon

You found your calling. Thank you for keeping us informed of current and past events that are important to our people, and our country’s future.

Fern

Would love to hear stories of the opposition, vietcons, etc.... like that 1 dude that survives in the jungle 20+years after the war ended, he just kept evading everyone deep in the jungle.

Tim

What a good man and a great interview. No F bombs, no posturing, just the stories of a super hero, I enjoyed this.

Fern

So true about fear sweat. I worked K9 at a US port of entry, land/sea/air, pedestrian, vehicle, cargo, ship, train. As a k9 team were recognized as a top 10 team in the nation for narcotics/human detection (illegal aliens). My K9 would pick up on the fear sweat, which made us shine!

Marshall

"Toe first" Too funny. I never served because of my spine, L4-L5. Nevertheless, when my older sister and I were young kids we would sneak around the house at night. Our bedrooms were upstairs and there were stairs we had to go down as well. Well, there were boards on the floor upstairs and on the stairs to the first floor that would squeak when stepped on if you walked normally. We learned how to walk "toe first" in order to not make any noise. I haven't thought about this in years, lol. I still walk like this when I'm walking on a wood floor like a dock over the water.

Steven Russelle

What a great guy. It would be a tall order finding a warrior who could beat the MAC SOG guys in a game of incredible bravery Can You Top This. Fast roping and being hauled out at the end of a rope beneath a 'copter were new ideas back then. Heroes of the United States of America.

Ian Lane

One of my favorite interviews you’ve done. I love hearing these stories from those who lived them. Very impactful

Toby Gooch

We truly Love you Shawn, much much respect, thank you for all that you do.

Brittny Steele

What a wonderful man and story teller. The VW vets are some amazing warriors!!

Johnpyrotek

Awesome incredible work Shawn he is beyond hero status truly a national treasure as others have said. Thank you for telling this story so well you are a total class act!!

Eric Marchewka

Blown away with another grand slam of an interview. Well done. God Bless.

Charley smith

Reach out to me Shawn for prayer requests.

Bobby

Long time since the fire pit stories!! I've been a big fan of both for a long time now; and I'm better for it

TREX

I’m a daughter of two World War II veterans. My army nurse anesthetist mother was recognized with a Bronze Star, my dad served in the army as a mechanic and flight engineer. Both were very patriotic. Many of my classmates and an ex spouse served during Vietnam. I served by waiting at home, helped put him through school after he got out. I was obsessed listening to this dialogue between two heroes. I like my mother. I became a nurse, she talked me out of enlisting during the first Gulf war. My mom actually got closer to combat than most nurses because her small surgical group was mistakenly deployed to a first aid station near Belgium. I will read your book. I want to understand what pain too many who have served and suffered. Thank you for such a thoughtful in depth episode. God bless both of you and so many who have truly paid a terrible price both physically and mentally.

Shana Hatch

Such an amazing interview!!

Goss

Love this guy, a true American bad ass hero.

Josh Pomponio

These are interviews America needs to here about

Tackleberry122

I love the interviews with the Vietnam era guys. My dad still won’t talk about his two tours over there. That’s something we always respected, but now that he is up there in years, I’m worried about losing those experiences forever.

Scotty Hearns

It is hard to pick a favorite SRS episode, but this is top 5.

Andy De Baerdemaeker

Excellent episode, Research shows that having a higher intelligence coefficient & high VO2max are the 2 main factors to succeed and maintain a carreer as a SF operator. Great books, especially the lessons learned! Greetings from Belgium

Dan

Those SOG dudes are a different breed of human being

daynalynn100@yahoo.com

This interview is the most informative & knowledgeable interview you’ve given. His explanations draw you in to every experience spoken about! Then next to him is Sarah Adams. Keep up the great work!
