The Soot Sprites, magical beings made from soot, are small, black, fuzzy creatures with round bodies and white eyes with black pupils. Typically, they move by levitating or hovering, but the film reveals that they can extend thin, black limbs (arms and legs) from their bodies to perform tasks, such as carrying coal to the furnace. Despite their small size, they can lift objects many times their own weight. If crushed, they dissolve back into soot but quickly reform themselves.
