I'm sure you have your own story planned, but I always imagined the drones serve some kind of benevolent purpose like white blood cells fighting off contamination. Perhaps they guard a rare, untouched planet full of life and resources from other space-faring civilizations. The boogies incapacitate and envelop trespassers, growing their own ranks and collective consciousness, but the hosts inside seem completely unharmed and safe. I could be wrong, but it just seems like it's not that bad to be assimilated. Maybe it's for an honorable cause.
