I wanted to give the impression that Striker is still haunted by Ruby Helen, that so much of his core drive, anger, and lust is derived from her and experience of losing her.

Maybe he thought he did everything right to win her and she was stolen by the upperclass. Maybe now he's considering that he just wasn't enough.
